A mouse may squeak or scratch when trapped, but those sounds do not confirm that a mouse is caught. Rodents can also make running, gnawing, and scratching noises inside walls or floors, and other sources can sound similar. Treat noise as a reason to look for direct evidence—not as a diagnosis.

A government rodent-control handbook describes running, gnawing, and scratching sounds, particularly from inside walls and floors. It also notes faint squeaks from young rodents in nests. These are general signs of rodent activity, not a verified description of a mouse caught in a trap. The handbook does not establish a characteristic trapped-mouse sound or a frequency that would identify one.

So a squeak, scrape, or rustle could prompt a careful check, but sound alone cannot tell you whether a mouse is trapped—or even confirm that the source is a mouse.
How to check for evidence
Look for signs of rodent activity rather than trying to identify it by sound. The CDC lists droppings, gnaw marks, nesting material, urine, and nibbled food as signs to look for when deciding where to place traps. If you suspect a trap has caught a mouse, check the trap itself without touching the animal or trap mechanism.

What to do if you suspect a mouse is trapped
Set and check traps safely
The CDC recommends traditional snap traps sized for mice or rats. Place a trap where you have found evidence of activity, with its baited end against a wall, and follow the package directions. Clean rodent waste carefully
Rodent diseases can spread through contact with rodents or contaminated waste. If you find droppings, urine, or nesting material, wear rubber or plastic gloves and follow the CDC’s disinfection and cleanup instructions. How to reduce the chance of more rodent activity
Seal entry points and reduce access to food, water, and shelter. The CDC says mice can squeeze through an opening about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters) wide. For small holes, it recommends steel wool with caulk; larger holes may need materials such as metal, cement, or hardware cloth. Keep food and waste sealed, and remove other attractants.
