A tube, tray, suet cage, or window feeder each serves different feeding habits; none guarantees a particular species, since local birds and conditions vary.
Choose feeder styles for different feeding habits
A mix of feeder styles can serve a broader range of birds than one feeder alone. Start with the birds you hope to observe, the food you can provide, and how much cleaning and weather protection the setup will need.

| Feeder style | Who it may serve | Food and placement | Upkeep to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tube | Many shrub- and treetop-feeding birds | Seed; hang securely where you can reach it to refill and clean. | Choose a design that comes apart for cleaning. Check for seed residue collecting below the ports. |
| Hopper | Many seed-eating birds, including larger visitors; also useful for shrub- and treetop-feeding birds | Seed; use a stable hanging or pole-mounted position. | Its larger supply can be convenient, but keep food dry and clean the interior regularly. |
| Platform or tray | Ground-feeding birds and other visitors that prefer an open surface | Seed or other suitable foods; position it where the surface is easy to inspect. | The open surface is exposed to weather and contamination, so remove damp or soiled food and clean it often. |
| Suet cage | Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees | Suet; Audubon’s general tips advise placing suet feeders above ground. | Inspect for spoiled food and clean the cage as needed. |
| Window feeder | Birds that will use the food offered; especially useful for close viewing | Attach securely to a suitable window and make the window bird-safe. | Check the feeder and nearby glass regularly. The feeder does not by itself eliminate collision risk. |
These are broad categories rather than a ranking or a guarantee of particular visitors. For guidance on how feeder designs work and why cleanable construction matters, see Cornell Lab’s guide to choosing a bird feeder.

Food matters as much as feeder shape. A seed feeder will not serve every bird: Audubon notes that fruit specialists such as robins, waxwings, bluebirds, and mockingbirds rarely eat birdseed. A feeder is one option, not a universal menu.

- Use a suet cage if you want to offer suet for birds such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees.
- For hummingbird feeders, take spoilage seriously: high-sugar food can go bad quickly and calls for frequent cleaning. Audubon advises briefly boiling nectar to sterilize it and dissolve sugar crystals; red food coloring is unnecessary.
Audubon’s backyard bird-feeding tips discuss food preferences and feeder choices. Avoid assuming that one seed mix or feeder will attract every bird in your area.
Make cleaning part of the feeder choice
A feeder is easier to care for if it is sturdy, keeps food dry, and can be taken apart. Cornell Lab recommends cleaning seed feeders about once every two weeks, and more often during heavy use or wet weather. Its feeder-cleaning guidance, dated August 20, 2024, describes taking feeders apart and washing them in a dishwasher or by hand with soap and boiling water, or with dilute bleach.

- Disassemble the feeder as its maker directs, then remove old seed and debris.
- Scrub and wash with soap and boiling water, or use a dilute bleach solution of no more than one part bleach to nine parts water. Cornell reports that a 10-minute soak in dilute bleach is effective in addition to scrubbing.
- Rinse as appropriate, allow the feeder to dry, and reassemble it according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Keep an eye on local reports of salmonella or sick birds and follow current local guidance if illness is reported. If you can’t clean a feeder reliably, choose a simpler design or offer food in a way you can maintain.
Place feeders thoughtfully and protect birds
Feeder location affects access, upkeep, and risk. Audubon’s general tips describe pole-mounted feeders about five feet off the ground and a cone-shaped baffle at least 17 inches in diameter to deter squirrels. These are starting points, not guarantees against every nuisance animal or predator; adjust placement to your site and local wildlife.

Feeders work best as part of a yard that also offers natural food and cover. Cornell Lab explains that native plants adapted to your region are more likely to thrive without pesticides or watering and can provide foods suited to native birds as well as shelter. You do not need to redesign the whole yard: even a few regionally appropriate plants can complement a feeder and give birds more reasons to use the space.
