A dog may be trained to perform a specific disability-related task—such as retrieving an object, reminding a handler to take medication, or helping during a seizure—but a dog’s comforting presence is not, by itself, a medical service under the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A service dog is not automatically a diagnostician, treatment provider, or perfectly reliable predictor of every emergency.
When the dog is the patient, treat seizures, collapse, and shock as veterinary emergencies. Keep the dog safe, avoid dangerous “home cures,” and obtain professional care promptly.

What a trained service dog can do for a person
Under U.S. ADA guidance, a service animal is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks directly related to a person’s disability. The relevant question is the trained action, not whether the dog wears a vest or makes its handler feel calmer. The U.S. Department of Justice describes examples in its service-animal guidance and FAQ.

Examples of disability-related tasks
- Retrieving objects for a wheelchair user.
- Reminding a person with depression to take prescribed medication.
- Alerting by licking a handler’s hand before a panic attack.
- Detecting the onset of a seizure and helping the person remain safe during it.
- Alerting a person with diabetes when blood sugar reaches a high or low level.
These are examples of tasks that a particular dog may be trained to perform. They are not abilities that every dog possesses, and the official guidance does not establish a detection success rate for any of them.

“If the dog’s mere presence provides comfort, it is not a service animal under the ADA.”
That distinction matters in an emergency. A pet that calms someone, a therapy animal, and a trained service dog may all be valuable, but comfort alone is not the disability-related task required by the ADA. The ADA also does not require a service dog to wear a vest or carry certification. Covered entities generally may not demand certification documentation as a condition of entry.
What the dog cannot be assumed to do
A trained task does not prove that a dog can diagnose an illness, provide medical treatment, or forecast every crisis. The reviewed DOJ material gives legal definitions and task examples, not performance guarantees. Do not substitute a dog’s alert for a glucose reading, a clinician’s assessment, prescribed treatment, or emergency services.

Ambulances and hospitals: what happens to the service dog?
The following access rules describe the United States ADA context. Laws in other countries and policies for particular facilities may differ.
Must a service animal be allowed to ride in an ambulance with its handler?
According to the DOJ’s service-animal FAQ, a service animal generally must be allowed to accompany its handler in an ambulance. There is a practical exception: if the ambulance is so crowded that the dog would interfere with emergency staff treating the patient, staff should arrange other transportation for the dog.
The exception is about interference with treatment, not a blanket ban on service animals. If transport for the dog is needed, tell the crew who can receive the dog and provide its leash, medications, or other essential items when circumstances allow.

What if the patient is admitted and cannot care for the dog?
If a hospitalized patient cannot care for or supervise the service dog, the patient should have an opportunity to arrange care before the hospital makes other appropriate arrangements. A practical plan can name a family member, friend, handler-support organization, boarding facility, or another person who is prepared to take temporary responsibility. Keep those contacts accessible rather than relying on memory during a crisis.

When the dog is having a seizure
A seizure can look frightening, but putting your hands near a convulsing dog’s mouth creates a bite risk and does not help the dog. The American Red Cross seizure guidance gives a simple first-aid priority: remove hazards, protect the dog from injury, and do not restrain it. What to do during the seizure
- Move furniture, sharp objects, stairs hazards, and other obstacles away if you can do so without putting yourself at risk.
- Keep the dog in a safe area and prevent falls or further impact.
- Do not hold the dog down or try to stop the movements.
- Keep your hands away from the dog’s mouth. Do not put a hand in its mouth to hold its tongue; dogs do not need a person to pull the tongue forward during a seizure.
- Observe the event and note how long it lasts. Timing helps the veterinarian decide how urgent the situation is.
When a seizure needs urgent veterinary attention
Call a veterinarian for a dog’s first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than three to four minutes, repeated seizures, or a dog that is not recovering afterward. The Red Cross identifies seizures lasting longer than four minutes and repeated seizures as medical emergencies. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions for transport; do not delay care while trying to identify the seizure’s cause at home.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a dog collapses
Collapse is a sign, not a diagnosis. Possible causes include shock, a seizure, an abnormal heart rhythm, anemia, orthopedic or neurologic problems, diabetes, breathing difficulty, heart disease, kidney or liver failure, and severe blood loss. The American Red Cross explains the range of possibilities in Collapse in Dogs.
Immediate response
- Check the surroundings and keep the dog and people safe from traffic, stairs, heat, or other hazards.
- Assess whether the dog needs CPR, following veterinary or trained first-aid guidance rather than guessing at the cause.
- Contact a veterinary hospital and arrange immediate transport.
- Handle the dog carefully, especially if trauma, pain, breathing difficulty, or a neurologic problem is possible.
A collapsed dog should be taken to a veterinary hospital immediately. A single sign cannot tell you whether the problem is cardiac, neurologic, metabolic, traumatic, or caused by blood loss.

Why shock is an emergency
Shock involves changes in blood flow and oxygen delivery. The Red Cross warns that untreated shock can progress to cardiopulmonary arrest and advises immediate veterinary care. Its guidance is available at Dogs in Shock.
Because shock can arise from many underlying problems, do not try to correct it with food, water, human medication, or a guessed diagnosis. Keep the dog as calm and safe as possible while obtaining veterinary help, and tell the hospital what you observed, when it began, and whether collapse, bleeding, breathing changes, or seizures occurred.
Prepare before an emergency happens
Preparation cannot replace a veterinarian, but it reduces the time lost searching for a hospital, records, or medication. The Canadian Red Cross’s November 2024 guide, How to Be Prepared for Pet Emergencies: A Guide for Dog Owners, recommends identifying the nearest emergency or 24-hour veterinary hospital and keeping its contact information accessible.
Build a practical emergency setup
- Save the address and phone number of the nearest emergency or 24-hour veterinary hospital in your phone and in a visible home location.
- Keep a canine first-aid kit where it can be reached quickly.
- Maintain copies of the dog’s medical records.
- Store necessary medications with clear instructions and check them regularly.
- Keep several days’ food available for an unexpected disruption.
- Keep a secure leash ready for moving the dog safely.
Make the supplies fit the individual dog. Prescribed medication and current records are more useful than a generic collection that does not match the dog’s needs.
Choose supplies and training for the gap you actually have
| Preparation option | What it provides | Best use | What it cannot replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canine first-aid kit | Physical supplies kept ready for an incident | When you need equipment immediately at home or during transport | Veterinary examination or emergency treatment |
| Pet first-aid training | Instruction in vital signs and critical emergencies, including breathing and cardiac emergencies, wounds, bleeding, and seizures | When you need practical skills for recognizing and responding to those scenarios | Professional diagnosis and hospital care |
| Emergency-veterinary plan | A known hospital, contact details, and a transport arrangement | When minutes matter and your usual clinic is closed | Hands-on treatment before arrival |
The American Red Cross describes its online Pet First Aid for Emergencies course as covering vital signs and critical emergencies such as breathing and cardiac emergencies, wounds, bleeding, and seizures. Select training that matches the situations you are likely to face and your ability to use the information under stress.
A simple decision path in the moment
If a person is the patient
- Tell emergency responders that the dog is a trained service animal and describe the task it performs if relevant.
- Ask how the dog can travel safely if the ambulance crew determines that its presence would interfere with treatment.
- If hospitalization follows, use the prepared caregiver contact before the dog’s needs become an additional crisis.
If the dog is the patient
- For a seizure, clear hazards, avoid restraint, keep hands away from the mouth, time the event, and call a veterinarian when the first-seizure, prolonged, repeated-seizure, or poor-recovery criteria apply.
- For collapse, treat it as urgent, assess the need for CPR, and go to a veterinary hospital immediately.
- For possible shock, do not wait for the cause to become obvious; obtain immediate veterinary care.
The safest role for a dog in a human medical emergency is the trained task it has actually learned. The safest role for a person facing a dog’s emergency is rapid hazard control, clear observation, and prompt veterinary care.
