What Eats Skunks? 12 Predators That Usually Keep Their Distance

Skunks have predators, but their warning pattern and powerful musk make them unusual prey. Here are 12 documented animals or predator groups, with clear limits on what each source proves.

Yes, skunks have predators, but most do not make them regular prey. Great horned owls are the clearest example: the Missouri Department of Conservation calls that owl the primary skunk predator in its regional account, and Animal Diversity Web identifies it as a known predator. New Mexico State University Extension also lists eagles, several large carnivores, foxes, badgers and humans.

The list below covers 12 animals or predator groups reported in North American wildlife sources. It is a list of animals that can kill and eat a skunk, not a ranking of how often they do so. Some records come from stomach contents and could represent scavenged carcasses rather than animals killed by the predator.

Why skunks are difficult prey

Skunks are small enough to be eaten by many carnivores and large raptors, yet they are unusually well defended. Their black-and-white pattern advertises danger, and their musk can make a close attack extremely unpleasant. Animal Diversity Web notes that predators may learn not to pursue skunks after a bad encounter and that skunks are not a staple food of any other species.

Warning comes before spraying

A threatened skunk generally tries to avoid a fight. It may run, hide or turn away before escalating. If the threat persists, it can face the attacker, stomp, raise its tail and display other warning signals. Spraying is usually the last step, giving the skunk a chance to escape rather than win a prolonged fight.

The spray is a deterrent, not an impenetrable shield

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance says skunk musk can be aimed up to 15 feet. Exact distance varies with the source and circumstances, so that figure should be treated as an upper description rather than a guaranteed range. A successful spray can distract a predator long enough for the skunk to get away, but it does not make the animal impossible to kill.

Birds and mammals face different risks

Animal Diversity Web reports that birds of prey are less susceptible to the odor than mammals. They are not wholly immune: musk striking the eyes can still cause a serious problem. This difference helps explain why owls and eagles appear prominently in predator lists, while many mammals avoid a direct encounter.

The 12 animals and predator groups reported to eat skunks

Animal or group What the sources establish Important qualification
Great horned owl Known predator; called the primary predator in Missouri’s account “Primary” applies to that regional account, not every location
Golden eagle Listed by New Mexico State University Extension No attack frequency is given
Bald eagle Listed by New Mexico State University Extension and University of Maryland Extension A listed predator is not necessarily a routine prey relationship
Coyote Included in several predator lists Stomach records may include carrion
Gray fox Named by New Mexico State University Extension Evidence is a documented list entry, not a rate
Red fox Named by New Mexico State University Extension Likely opportunity-based rather than staple feeding
Mountain lion (puma) Named by extension and natural-history sources Encounters and regional availability vary
Bobcat Named by extension and natural-history sources Some evidence comes from stomach contents
American badger Named by extension and natural-history sources Records do not always prove an active kill
Canada lynx Lynx are included in Animal Diversity Web’s family-level account No Canada-lynx-specific frequency is supplied
Humans Included as a skunk predator by New Mexico State University Extension This broad category includes human-caused mortality, not ordinary wild predation
Other eagle species Animal Diversity Web uses the broader eagle group This is a taxonomic group, not one separately documented species

The final entry is included only to represent the broader eagle evidence without inventing a twelfth, equally well-documented species. A scientifically stricter list would be shorter or would separate named species, predator groups and human-caused mortality.

1. Great horned owl

Great horned owls are the strongest-supported example in the list. Animal Diversity Web identifies them as known skunk predators, and the Missouri Department of Conservation describes them as the primary predator in its regional account. Their nocturnal hunting schedule overlaps with skunk activity, and their aerial approach can reduce the chance of a face-to-face spray. “Primary” should remain tied to Missouri’s account; it is not a continent-wide ranking.

2. Golden eagle

New Mexico State University Extension lists golden eagles among skunk predators. A large eagle can seize a skunk from above, where the mammal’s warning posture is less effective. The source establishes that golden eagles can be predators, but it does not report how often they attack skunks or whether the relationship is important across the species’ entire range.

3. Bald eagle

Bald eagles appear in the New Mexico State University Extension list and in University of Maryland Extension material. Their inclusion means a bald eagle may kill or consume a skunk under suitable circumstances. It does not mean skunks are a normal part of the bald eagle diet, and no comparable predation rate is provided.

4. Coyote

Coyotes are named in multiple predator accounts. They are adaptable, widespread and capable of attacking a young, injured or cornered skunk. They also commonly investigate carrion. The Missouri Department of Conservation cautions that skunk remains found in coyote stomachs do not establish whether the coyote killed the skunk or scavenged it.

5. Gray fox

New Mexico State University Extension specifically names gray foxes. A fox could take a small or young skunk when the opportunity is favorable, but a healthy adult can make the encounter costly. The available listing supports capability, not a claim that gray foxes routinely seek skunks.

6. Red fox

Red foxes are also included in the New Mexico list. Their flexible diet means they may consume a skunk they find dead or vulnerable. As with gray foxes, the published list does not provide a kill rate, regional ranking or proof that most reported meals came from active hunting.

7. Mountain lion (puma)

Mountain lions, also called pumas, are named by extension and natural-history sources as skunk predators. A puma has the size and strength to kill an adult skunk, but it normally selects prey that can be handled with less defensive risk. Local prey abundance, the skunk’s age and whether the animal is surprised all change the likelihood of an attack.

8. Bobcat

Bobcats appear in the New Mexico State University Extension list and other natural-history accounts. They can take small mammals and may attack a skunk, especially a juvenile. Missouri’s account emphasizes that bobcat stomach evidence cannot by itself distinguish a fresh kill from scavenging.

9. American badger

American badgers are powerful digging predators and are listed by both extension and natural-history sources. Their underground hunting style can bring them into close contact with skunks. Nevertheless, stomach remains alone do not prove that a badger killed the skunk it consumed, and the musk remains a strong reason to avoid unnecessary contact.

10. Canada lynx

Animal Diversity Web’s broader family-level account includes lynx, which supports Canada lynx as a possible predator in the list. That evidence is less specific than a species-level study of Canada lynx and skunks. No frequency or regional rate is supplied, so this entry should be read as documented family-level evidence rather than proof of common hunting.

11. Humans

New Mexico State University Extension includes humans among skunk predators. In this context, the category can include people directly killing skunks, vehicle collisions and other human-caused mortality. It should not be presented as an ordinary predator-prey relationship comparable to an owl hunting at night.

12. Other eagle species

Animal Diversity Web sometimes discusses eagles as a group rather than naming every species. That broader category is why “other eagle species” appears here. It prevents a broad source statement from being turned into a fabricated species-level claim. The evidence indicates that eagles can be involved, while leaving the frequency and identity of particular species unspecified.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

A stomach sample is not a hunting video

Missouri Department of Conservation states that there is evidence coyotes, badgers, foxes and bobcats will prey on skunks, but much of it comes from examining stomach contents. The same source says it is unknown whether some skunks were killed or eaten as carrion. That distinction matters: finding skunk remains proves consumption, not necessarily the circumstances of death.

Young skunks face greater danger

Animal Diversity Web notes that young skunks may be especially vulnerable. They are smaller, less experienced and less able to deter a predator than adults. Predation risk therefore is not equal across ages, and a list of possible predators should not be read as evidence that each one regularly kills adult skunks.

Regional statements are not global rules

The core sources concern North American skunks and do not establish a universal list for every skunk species worldwide. Habitat, predator communities and local behavior differ. The Missouri “primary predator” statement is regional, while the New Mexico extension list is a documented set of possibilities rather than a continent-wide ranking.

How a skunk encounter usually unfolds

  1. Detection: The predator notices the skunk through movement, scent or an opportunity such as an exposed den.
  2. Assessment: The skunk may retreat, hide or hold its ground while displaying warning signals.
  3. Escalation: Facing, stomping and tail-raising communicate that a close attack will be punished.
  4. Spray or withdrawal: If the threat continues, the skunk may spray; otherwise, either animal may break away.
  5. Aftermath: A predator that is sprayed may abandon the attempt. If the skunk is young, injured, trapped or already dead, the predator may still consume it.

This sequence explains the apparent contradiction in the title: many animals can eat skunks, but the skunk’s defense makes active hunting a poor bargain compared with easier prey.

Is there a ranking of which animals eat the most skunks?

No comparable numeric statistic is provided for the frequency of skunk predation by each listed animal. The available accounts identify predators and describe behavior, but they do not support percentages, national rates or a reliable twelve-place ranking. The most defensible conclusion is qualitative: great horned owls stand out in the Missouri account, while several mammals and eagles are documented as possible predators with varying and often indirect evidence.

Bottom line

Skunks are prey, not predator-proof. Great horned owls are the clearest known specialist-like threat in the cited North American accounts, and eagles, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, badgers, mountain lions, lynx and people can also be associated with skunk deaths or consumption. Most predators still avoid healthy adult skunks because warning displays and musk turn an easy meal into a risky one.
