Elk scat is usually a group of oval or elongated pellets, but it can also appear as a soft, flattened clump. Season, moisture and forage change its texture, and deer droppings can look nearly identical. The most reliable identification combines pellet size and shape with habitat, tracks, season and other wildlife signs rather than relying on one dropping.
What does elk poop look like?
Most elk droppings consist of many individual pellets. A typical pellet is oval to elongated, slightly dimpled at one end and somewhat pointed or projecting at the other. Pellets may lie separately, collect in a loose group or stick together in a mound.

Fresh scat can be dark, moist and glossy. As it dries, it becomes firmer, lighter and easier to distinguish as separate pellets. A rich, wet diet can produce a soft mass in which the original pellet shapes are difficult to see. That is normal variation, not proof that the animal was sick.

Field measurements from regional guides
| Source and setting | Description | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife | Elk “elkpies” average about 4–6 inches in diameter; deer piles are about 2 inches across. Elk pellets tend to be somewhat larger than deer pellets. | These are regional field descriptions, not a universal diagnostic standard. |
| Idaho Fish and Game viewing guide | Elk scat is listed at roughly ½–¾ inch in diameter, with pellets about ¾–1 inch long; pellets are oval to elongated and often clumped. | Treat these as guide measurements for that region, not a range that applies to every elk. |
| Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Roosevelt elk description | Dry, hard, elongated pellets are common in winter; summer scat can become soft and deformed. | This demonstrates seasonal change in one elk population and should not be treated as an invariant rule everywhere. |
Because the Washington measurements describe whole “elkpies” while the Idaho figures describe individual pellets, they are not contradictory. They measure different parts of the dropping.
Why is elk poop sometimes pellets and sometimes a pile?
Texture follows the animal’s digestive contents. Elk browsing on dry grasses, mature stems or other fibrous winter forage generally leave firmer pellets. When elk eat lush, water-rich plants, the feces contain more moisture and can lose their individual shape.
Season is therefore a useful clue, but not a rigid calendar rule. The Alaska description of hard winter pellets and soft summer clumps is an example of a pattern, not a promise for every herd. A sudden change in weather, a local flush of green plants or access to irrigated forage can alter scat within the same season.

Do not infer illness from a single soft dropping. A visual check cannot establish infection, parasites, dehydration or any other health condition. Interpretation requires repeated observations and, when warranted, laboratory testing by wildlife professionals.
How can you tell elk poop from deer poop?
Elk and deer pellets overlap so much that scat alone can remain ambiguous. Use all of the following clues together.

| Clue | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pellet size and shape | Compare several pellets, not the smallest or largest one. Look for oval or elongated forms and the dimpled/projecting ends. | Elk pellets are often larger, but individual variation and regional differences make size an indicator rather than proof. |
| Degree of clumping | Note whether pellets remain distinct, form a loose group or merge into a soft mass. | Moist forage can make either species’ scat look less pellet-like. |
| Local range | Check which ungulates actually occur in the habitat. | A plausible species must be present; distribution can eliminate otherwise similar possibilities. |
| Tracks and trails | Look nearby for hoof size, track shape, repeated trails, beds and feeding sign. | Associated sign can support or challenge an identification based on scat. |
| Season and forage | Consider recent snow, rainfall and the plants available in the area. | Diet and moisture explain why scat texture changes and help put a size observation in context. |
Washington wildlife guidance notes that deer and elk pellets can share the same general shape and texture when diets are steady. It also reports that an elk group may contain roughly twice as many pellets as a deer group. Group size is another supporting clue, not a guaranteed count-based identification.
A practical identification sequence
- Observe without disturbing it. Photograph the entire group and one or two representative pellets beside a scale such as a ruler.
- Describe the texture. Record whether pellets are dry and separate, moist and distinct, or merged into a mass.
- Measure several pellets. Avoid basing the conclusion on one unusually large or small piece.
- Search for associated sign. Check for tracks, trails, beds, browsed vegetation and the direction of travel.
- Confirm the species list for the area. Local wildlife maps or agency field guides are more useful than a generic online photograph.
- Assign a confidence level. If scat is the only evidence and deer are also present, report it as “possible elk” rather than certain elk.
What does elk poop reveal about what elk eat?
Elk are intermediate, or mixed, feeders. Their diet includes grasses and forbs as well as leaves, stems and bark from shrubs and trees. The balance changes with local plant availability, season, year and snow conditions.
Seasonal feeding pattern
- Early spring: Elk commonly use newly growing grasses and other early plants when snow recedes and tender forage appears.
- Late spring and summer: Forbs and shrubs generally become more important as those plants become abundant.
- Winter: Elk shift among the grasses, woody browse and other forage still accessible above or through the snow. The exact mix differs sharply by habitat.
A US Forest Service FEIS review summarized a 1973 assessment of annual elk diets in the Intermountain West and Manitoba that identified 159 forbs, 59 grasses and 95 shrubs in the diet records. The breadth of that list illustrates why one visible fragment in scat cannot identify an entire meal.
The same FEIS review summarized a 2007 analysis of 72 western North American winter-diet studies conducted from 1938 through 2002. Forbs made up less than 10% of the winter diet in 84% of those cases. That statistic describes the reviewed studies collectively; it does not predict the winter diet of every herd.
A Montana grasslands review cited winter diets composed of 65% to 100% specified climax grasses. Those percentages apply to the regional grassland conditions examined, not to elk in forests, coastal ranges or other ecosystems.

A Montana example of local variation
In a west-central Montana project, investigators used fresh fecal pellets and plant-DNA metabarcoding to identify forage groups. Common summer detections included fireweed among forbs, huckleberry among shrubs and trees, and sedge among graminoids. Common winter detections included yarrow, western larch and fescue. These findings describe that study region and seasons; they are not a universal menu for elk.
How scientists use scat samples
Scat can provide information that casual observation cannot. Wildlife researchers may use it to investigate diet, animal distribution, health indicators and DNA. Maine’s wildlife guidance explains that scat can show what an animal has eaten and where it has foraged, while genetic methods can help identify animals or populations.
The Montana project illustrates the sampling care involved. Researchers collected 20 fresh, moist pellets per composite summer sample, with pellets taken from 10 pellet groups, and then used fecal DNA metabarcoding to identify plants. This is very different from looking at one dropping in the field.
Even laboratory results need cautious interpretation. The number of DNA sequence reads can be influenced by taxon-specific laboratory and digestion biases. Read abundance should not be treated automatically as an exact percentage of the plant biomass the elk consumed. A plant that produces more detectable DNA may appear more prominent than its actual dietary mass.
Visual scat inspection is therefore useful for description and field clues, but it cannot establish a precise diet, identify an individual elk, diagnose disease or measure the animal’s health.

Is elk poop dangerous to touch?
Yes, it can carry germs that are harmful to people. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry states: “Do not touch scat with your bare hands because the germs in scat can be harmful.” The safest way to identify a dropping is to leave it where it is and use photographs or notes.
If handling is necessary
- Wear disposable rubber or latex gloves.
- Use tweezers or another tool rather than your fingers.
- Keep hands away from your face while working.
- Place contaminated disposable materials in a sealed bag.
- Remove gloves carefully and wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Clean and disinfect reusable tools according to the product label.
Maine’s guidance also suggests carrying a small magnifying glass for examining scat; a phone’s magnifier function may be sufficient. This is optional field equipment, not a requirement for identification.
Common mistakes when identifying elk scat
Treating size as a rule
“Bigger means elk” is an oversimplification. The Washington and Idaho measurements come from particular regional guides and use different measurement approaches. Moisture, diet and individual variation can blur the difference.
Assuming every elk dropping is a pellet
Soft clumps occur when forage is lush or otherwise moisture-rich. Conversely, cold, dry conditions can preserve firm pellets even when the animal has eaten more than one plant type.
Using color to diagnose health
Color changes as scat dries and can reflect food pigments. Color alone does not prove disease, poisoning or nutritional deficiency.

Calling a species from one sign
A single dropping without tracks, habitat context or repeated observations is weak evidence. Deer, elk and other ungulates can leave overlapping signs, especially where their ranges meet.
Opening or dissecting scat bare-handed
Even a dry-looking sample should be treated as potentially contaminated. Use gloves and tools, or leave collection to trained personnel.
When should you report or seek expert help?
Contact a local wildlife agency, park office or qualified biologist if you need a dependable species identification for a management, property or research question. Provide clear photographs, the location and habitat, approximate date, nearby tracks and whether the scat was fresh, dry, pelletized or clumped.
Seek professional advice rather than attempting a diagnosis when you find repeated unusual scat, a dead or visibly ill elk, or signs of a possible toxic exposure. A photograph can document the observation, but laboratory examination and trained field assessment are needed for conclusions about disease or health.
The bottom line on elk poop
Elk scat is most often a group of oval or elongated pellets, yet it may become a soft clump when diet and moisture change. Elk pellets are often somewhat larger than deer pellets, but the species cannot always be separated by scat alone. Combine measurements with habitat, season, tracks and other signs; handle samples only with gloves and tools; and treat any conclusion about diet, disease or health as provisional unless it comes from appropriate laboratory or wildlife-professional work.
