Fish found in Big Bear Lake
| Fish | What anglers should know |
|---|---|
| Rainbow trout | The lake’s signature and most popular target; stocked trout and naturally suitable cold-water habitat support the fishery. |
| Brown trout | Documented in official lake records, although local fishing coverage emphasizes rainbow trout much more heavily. |
| Largemouth bass | A warm-water game fish found around structure such as docks, rocks, and weed beds. |
| Smallmouth bass | Also documented in Big Bear Lake, with a separate official lake-record entry. |
| Bluegill | A panfish commonly associated with shore areas and marina docks. |
| Pumpkinseed | A locally listed panfish; local guidance groups it with bluegill, crappie, and other sunfish. |
| Crappie | A panfish documented in lake records and local fishing guidance. |
| Channel catfish | A summer target, particularly toward the eastern end of the lake. |
| Blue catfish | Documented in the Municipal Water District’s official lake records. |

| Common carp | Present in the lake and treated locally as an invasive-species-management concern. |
Rainbow trout: Big Bear Lake’s main attraction
Rainbow trout are the fish most closely associated with Big Bear Lake. Local fishing guidance describes them as the lake’s most popular fish, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife hatchery materials identify Big Bear Lake among waters receiving catchable-size trout.

The lake’s depth provides colder habitat that can help trout persist through warm weather. That does not mean trout will be equally available everywhere or at every time of year: depth, temperature, weather, boat traffic, and seasonal conditions all affect where fish hold.
The Municipal Water District’s displayed lake records include an 18.69-pound rainbow trout caught on May 24, 2009. That is a documented lake record, not a typical expected catch size. Most visitors should choose equipment for ordinary trout fishing rather than assume record-class fish are common.
For a basic trout trip, rainbow trout fishing lures are a natural starting point, along with a suitable freshwater rod-and-reel setup, light line, hooks, and a landing net. The lure category is a general tackle suggestion—not a claim that any particular lure has been tested or guarantees a catch.
Brown trout
Brown trout are also documented from Big Bear Lake. The District’s displayed records list a 1.739-pound brown trout caught on May 30, 2026. This confirms that brown trout have been recorded in the lake, although the available local material presents rainbow trout as the dominant visitor fishery.
Anglers targeting brown trout can generally prepare with the same broad category of freshwater trout tackle used for rainbow trout. The record entry alone does not establish how abundant brown trout are, where they concentrate, or what bait or lure is most effective.
Largemouth and smallmouth bass
Big Bear Lake has both largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Summer is described locally as a productive period for bass, especially around docks, rocky areas, and weed beds. Those locations are useful starting points, but they are not guaranteed fishing spots.
The displayed District records list a largemouth bass weighing 8.03 pounds and a smallmouth bass weighing 4.08 pounds. The two species may share some habitat, but anglers should not assume that a lure or presentation suitable for one will always produce the other.

Local guidance specifically recommends crankbaits and soft plastics for bass around structure. A practical selection of bass crankbaits and soft plastics for bass can cover those two approaches. These are general lure categories supported by local fishing advice, not personally tested product recommendations.
Bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie
Bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie are the principal panfish named in local Big Bear Lake guidance. They are associated especially with the south shore and marina docks, where relatively accessible structure can make them appealing targets for families and light-tackle anglers.
The District’s displayed records include bluegill and crappie catches, including entries dated May 4, 2026, for bluegill and April 17, 2026, for crappie. The dates and record weights document catches entered in the District’s records; they do not show how many fish are currently present or how easy they are to catch.
Small hooks, bobbers, light line, and compact panfish tackle are the usual kind of equipment for this type of fishing. Before keeping any fish, check the latest regulations because the District’s 2025 summary grouped bluegill, crappie, sunfish, and pumpkinseed under panfish rules and indicated no size limit, but rules can change.
Channel catfish, blue catfish, and bullhead catfish
Big Bear Lake supports several catfish types. Channel catfish are the species most specifically discussed in local visitor guidance. That guidance identifies the eastern end of the lake, near Stanfield Cutoff and the East Boat Public Launch Ramp, as a principal area for catfish fishing.
Suggested bait examples in the local guide include stink bait, mackerel, shrimp, and chicken liver. However, there is an important Big Bear-specific restriction: the Municipal Water District prohibits live bait on the lake. Generic catfish advice that recommends live bait should not be applied here without checking the current local rules.
The District’s displayed lake records list a blue catfish weighing 26.65 pounds and a channel catfish weighing 28.67 pounds. These are substantial documented catches, but they should not be treated as normal sizes or as evidence that every angler will encounter large catfish.

Common carp are present in Big Bear Lake and are treated locally as an invasive-species-control concern. Big Bear materials have promoted carp-focused bowfishing events, and the District’s displayed lake records include a 23.6-pound common carp.
California regulatory language applicable to Big Bear Lake permits bow-and-arrow fishing for carp and catfish, subject to the applicable equipment, species, licensing, and location requirements. This is not permission to use any bowfishing equipment in any manner or to take fish outside the current rules.
The District’s 2025 regulations summary listed a five-fish daily bag limit for carp and no size limit. Verify the current limit before fishing. The District also prohibits depositing fish, amphibians, or plants into the lake, a rule relevant to preventing the spread of invasive species.
Crayfish are present, but they are not fish
Crayfish are found throughout Big Bear Lake and are relevant to a complete fishing overview, but they are crustaceans rather than fish. Local materials promote crayfish collection and mention traps as an option, subject to the applicable rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Readers specifically interested in collecting them may look at a crayfish trap, but should first confirm whether trapping is allowed at the intended location, what equipment is legal, and what catch or possession limits apply. A crayfish trap is not a substitute for a fishing license or compliance with lake regulations.
What should you bring for Big Bear Lake fishing?
- Freshwater rod and reel: Choose a setup appropriate to your target species and whether you are fishing from shore or a boat.
- Trout tackle: Bring light line, hooks, and permitted trout lures for the lake’s principal fishery.
- Bass lures: Crankbaits and soft plastics are the lure categories specifically recommended in local guidance.
- Catfish tackle: Pack hooks, sinkers, and permitted non-live bait; do not assume live bait is legal.
- Small panfish tackle: Bobbers and small hooks are suitable categories for bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie fishing.
- Tackle box: A fishing tackle box makes it easier to separate trout, bass, catfish, and panfish equipment.
- Landing net and measuring equipment: These help land fish carefully and confirm size before deciding whether a fish may legally be kept.
- Current regulations: Carry or review the latest Big Bear Municipal Water District and California Department of Fish and Wildlife rules before casting.
Big Bear Lake fishing rules to check before you go
Most anglers fishing Big Bear Lake generally need a California fishing license. Local guidance notes an exception for anglers under age 16, but license requirements can include additional circumstances and should be confirmed through current California regulations.

The District’s 2025 regulations summary included these dated reference points:
- Black bass: 12-inch minimum size and a five-fish daily bag limit.
- Catfish: 10-fish daily bag limit and no size limit listed.
- Carp: five-fish daily bag limit and no size limit listed.
- Panfish: no size limit listed in the summary, with bluegill, crappie, sunfish, and pumpkinseed included in the combined section.
Do not treat those figures as permanent law. Check the latest District publication and California Department of Fish and Wildlife rules for current size limits, bag and possession limits, permitted methods, and closures.
Streams and tributaries can have rules different from those on the main lake. The District’s 2025 publication stated that streams flowing into Big Bear Lake are closed during a spring period and that Bear Creek below Bear Valley Dam has artificial-lure and barbless-hook requirements. Anyone fishing outside the main lake should verify the exact current dates and boundaries.

Yes, but consumption should follow California’s site-specific health advice. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment issued a Big Bear Lake advisory in January 2018 concerning mercury and PCBs. It covers black bass species, common carp, crappie, and rainbow trout.
Under that advisory, women ages 18–49 and children ages 1–17 may eat up to:
- Five servings per week of crappie or rainbow trout; or
- One serving per week of black bass or common carp.
For women age 50 and older and men age 18 and older, the advisory allows up to:

OEHHA defines a serving as approximately the size and thickness of the eater’s hand. It recommends eating only the skinless fillet because PCBs can accumulate in the skin, fat, and internal organs. These recommendations are not unrestricted permission to eat unlimited fish.

The Big Bear-specific advisory does not provide a species-specific limit for every fish that may occur in the lake, including every catfish or panfish named in local materials. For those species, consult the current California statewide fish-consumption advisory rather than assuming that the Big Bear limits apply.
How reliable is the species list?
The sources serve different purposes. The Municipal Water District’s lake-record page documents fish that anglers have weighed and submitted. The tourism guide focuses on practical visitor fishing. The District’s regulations publication identifies species and fishing rules. None of these sources is a formal, exhaustive biological survey.
The most accurate summary is therefore: Big Bear Lake is best known for rainbow trout, but anglers may also catch brown trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, channel and blue catfish, bullhead catfish, and common carp. Because regulations, stocking, closures, and local conditions can change, confirm the latest information with the Big Bear Municipal Water District and California Department of Fish and Wildlife before fishing.
