These are examples, not a recommendation to feed every item or a veterinary standard for a fixed number of foods. The calorie-density figures below are from the university’s published table; its publication year is not stated. Calorie density is not a serving recommendation.

How to prepare produce safely
Wash produce, remove seeds, pits, stems, rinds, and other inedible parts as appropriate, then cut it into small pieces to reduce choking risk. Serve it plain: skip sugar, sauces, butter, salt, and seasonings. Cook vegetables when appropriate, and use plain cooked pumpkin puree rather than raw pumpkin.

Introduce only one new food at a time and watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of digestive upset. Stop offering it if your cat reacts poorly. Cats may not be interested, and there is no nutritional need to persuade them to eat produce.
How much can a cat eat?
Keep produce portions small and occasional. The amounts in PetMD’s examples apply to healthy cats and are not universal serving limits: it suggests three or four plain peas at a time, or a half-inch cube of thoroughly cooked broccoli, once or twice a week. Its guidance also limits cooked sweet potato to less than one tablespoon. PetMD recommends a tiny portion of banana and veterinary sign-off.

- Seeds and pits: apple seeds and pits from stone fruits such as peaches and plums should not be given. Cherries are also listed as unsafe in North Carolina State University’s pet guide.
- Citrus: North Carolina State University’s guide identifies citrus as unsafe or capable of causing digestive upset; do not offer it.
These risks are not interchangeable: the potential danger depends on the food and the amount eaten. If your cat may have eaten a toxic food, call your veterinarian promptly. If your regular veterinarian is unavailable, contact an emergency clinic or an animal poison-control resource. Cornell Feline Health Center’s instruction is clear: “IMPORTANT: DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are specifically directed to do so.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are fruits and vegetables beneficial for cats?
Produce is optional, not a necessary source of nutrition for cats. A cat’s main diet should remain nutritionally complete cat food; fruit or vegetables should not replace it or be treated as a way to improve a balanced diet. A small plain taste can be an occasional treat if it is suitable for that individual cat.
