PerthNow described the work as a “world first,” but its report does not confirm that artificial insemination took place or that the effort produced eggs or chicks.
What did the German specialists do at Perth Zoo?
PerthNow reported on 12 January 2024 that Michael Lierz, director of the University of Giessen clinic for birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and Dominik Fischer, a bird specialist at Wuppertal Zoo, visited Perth Zoo the previous December. The report says they collected semen from western ground parrots.
Lierz said the sperm would be evaluated to help assess males’ breeding potential. The report presented artificial insemination as a possible way to help improve fertility in future breeding efforts, not as a confirmed outcome of the visit. PerthNow’s report does not describe a technical protocol or provide results from sperm evaluation.
Did the work lead to insemination, eggs or chicks?
The report does not establish that an artificial insemination was performed, or that the semen collection led to eggs, hatchlings or a later breeding result. Its headline calls the effort a “world first,” but that is PerthNow’s characterization; the report does not independently substantiate the global distinction. The documented work is semen collection, with evaluation and possible future use in breeding described as the aim.

Why was the work important?
Western ground parrots are critically endangered, and the PerthNow article described breeding them as difficult because so little is known about them. Perth Zoo Australian fauna supervisor Arthur Ferguson told the publication the species was “very close to extinction” and “desperately needed our help.”
The article reported fewer than 150 birds remaining in the wild as of January 2024. That is a historical figure from the news report, not a current population estimate; it does not identify the original survey behind the number. PerthNow also reported an estimate that the 2015 South West bushfires destroyed almost 90 per cent of the bird’s habitat, without identifying the underlying assessment.

How did the work fit into other conservation efforts?
PerthNow separately reported that five western ground parrots were moved in September 2023 from Cape Arid National Park to a special conservation reserve in Albany. The publication described this as a wild-to-wild translocation. It is a distinct effort from the semen collection at Perth Zoo; the article does not say the two activities were directly linked.
Ferguson acknowledged the difficulty of the work while expressing hope: “Working with critically endangered species is challenging, but we have hope that we can turn things around and create a brighter future for the western ground parrot”. PerthNow’s January 2024 article does not provide a later update on the collection or the birds’ current status.
