A secondary account says Gunnar, a puppy estimated to be about seven weeks old, was left behind after animal control rescued his mother and littermates. It recounts that rescuers found him with a piece of bread, then took him for veterinary care. The detailed story has not been independently confirmed in the primary report it cites, so its particulars should be read as reported rather than verified.
What the account says happened to Gunnar
A February 21, 2025, article in Indian Defence Review recounts Gunnar’s story and attributes it to The Dodo. The original Dodo report was not located, and no official Sidewalk Specials account was located for corroboration.
According to that retelling, animal control had rescued Gunnar’s mother and siblings, leaving him behind. Sidewalk Specials, described in the article as a rescue organization in De Doorns, South Africa, was alerted and went to find him. The article says founder Rachael Sylvester found the puppy with a piece of bread. It attributes to her the description that he was wagging his tail and wanted to share it. Neither the scene nor the quoted words were independently verified against a primary interview.
His reported health problems and recovery
The same article reports that Gunnar had severe anemia, tick-bite fever, worms and ticks, and an eye infection. It says he received veterinary treatment and improved, but it does not provide medical records that would independently establish those diagnoses or the course of care.

Those are details from the secondary retelling, not independently confirmed updates from his adopter or the rescue organization.
What is confirmed—and what remains unclear
An Animal Philosophy YouTube listing dated October 1, 2025, matches the subject of the rescue story. It does not, on its own, confirm the medical history, the bread-sharing moment, or what happened after Gunnar’s reported adoption. The available accounts identify a plausible narrative, but the central details remain attributable to the secondary article rather than independently established facts.
