A German Shepherd briefly chased a juvenile wolf near Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2025, according to an eyewitness account published by Cowboy State Daily. The report says the animals never made direct contact and both were uninjured. The headline’s claim that tourists watched “in horror” is not established by the reporting.

What happened near Canyon Village?

MacNeil Lyons, a Yellowstone tour guide and former park ranger, told Cowboy State Daily that a German Shepherd got out of a vehicle and chased a wolf near Canyon Village. The wolf stopped and stood its ground. The encounter ended when the dog responded to its owner’s voice commands and returned to the vehicle.

The report was published June 17, 2025, and describes the incident as happening on Friday; June 13 is therefore an inferred date, not a date explicitly printed in the account. Lyons believed the wolf was a juvenile, perhaps a yearling, but did not know its sex. Any more specific identification of the wolf or its pack was his assessment, not independently verified.

Was the dog or wolf hurt?

No. Lyons said the animals did not make direct contact and both emerged unscathed. The account describes a brief chase, not a prolonged fight or an attack on people.

How did the dog get out of the vehicle?

Lyons relayed the owner’s belief that a safety feature on the rear window of a 2024 Jeep reversed the window while the dog’s head was near it, allowing the dog to escape. That is the owner’s explanation as reported by Lyons; the vehicle mechanics were not independently verified in the article.

What should visitors do if wildlife is nearby?

Yellowstone National Park’s wildlife safety guidance tells visitors to stay at least 100 yards (91 metres) from wolves, bears, and cougars, and at least 25 yards (23 metres) from other wildlife. The National Park Service says, “The safest (and often best) view of wildlife is from inside a car.” Binoculars and telephoto lenses help people watch from a safe distance; NPS recommends lenses of 300 mm or greater for adequate reach. If an animal comes closer, back away to restore the required distance, and report wildlife conflicts to a ranger.

Lyons said people on foot had been only a few feet from the wolf. His advice, quoted by Cowboy State Daily, was: “You have to be the smart two-legged one and get back in your vehicle.”

NPS says wolves rarely pose a threat to people, but wolves that become too comfortable around humans can create safety concerns. Disturbance near dens and other homesites can cause wolves to abandon areas or move pups; the report does not indicate that this encounter caused harm or habituation.

What are Yellowstone’s rules for dogs?

According to Yellowstone’s pet rules, pets may be in developed areas within 100 feet (30.5 metres) of roads, parking areas, and campgrounds. They must be physically controlled at all times—in a vehicle, in a crate, or on a leash no longer than six feet. Pets are not allowed on boardwalks, hiking trails, in the backcountry, or in thermal areas. NPS says these restrictions help protect pets and wildlife, prevent disease exchange, and limit disturbance.
