In 2009, PerthNow reported that about 300 animals, including scimitar-horned oryx and addax, had been bought by a hunting safari business. The pygmy hippo was not part of that reported sale: a pig hunter accidentally shot it after mistaking it for a pig.
What was Tipperary Station’s wildlife sanctuary?
Tipperary Station was a private wildlife sanctuary established by Warren Anderson in the Northern Territory. ABC News reported in 2018 that the collection had reached about 2,200 animals. The station housed exotic species as well as native wildlife, and its history involved several different transfers rather than one fully documented clearance.

ABC’s 2018 retrospective recounts that 170 animals from Broome’s Pearl Coast Zoo were transferred to Tipperary in 1991 at a cost of $1.5 million. Those figures are reported retrospectively by ABC, not a complete accounting of everything later kept or moved from the station.

Where did the animals go?
News accounts cover different points in the transfers and do not reconcile into a complete inventory. ABC reported in 2003 that Mareeba Wild Animal Park first bought about 2,000 animals, then on-sold all but about 100 to an unnamed Northern Territory interest intended to keep them in a private collection. The buyer’s identity and the deal value were not disclosed.

PerthNow reported in 2009 that safari operator Kevin Gleeson bought about 300 animals from David Gill for Mary River Australian Safaris. ABC’s 2018 reconstruction also describes animals going to sanctuaries and other facilities, transfers of some animals to Cairns and Indonesia, and large herds going to Mary River. These reports describe different stages and do not establish the final destination of every animal.

Were Tipperary’s animals sold for hunting?
PerthNow’s 2009 report said about 300 animals, including scimitar-horned oryx and addax, were sold to Mary River Australian Safaris, a Northern Territory hunting safari. That sale meant animals entered a safari business; it does not establish that every animal was hunted or that every animal later became a trophy.

In November 2009, a pig hunter accidentally shot Tipperary’s pygmy hippo after mistaking it for a pig. PerthNow and ABC both described the shooting as accidental. The hippo was not reported as one of the animals sold to the safari, and its death should not be confused with intentional trophy hunting.

ABC’s 2018 retrospective says the hippo’s remains were later recovered and assembled as a research specimen. Museum curator Jared Archibald explained that the specimen could support comparative research.
How did the hippo get out?
The exact route by which the hippo escaped remains unresolved in ABC’s account. Ross Ainsworth, a veterinarian who worked at Tipperary, suggested the hippo may have escaped as a calf; Rosemary Sullivan recalled a missing newborn. These are attributed recollections and a hypothesis, not a confirmed explanation of how it reached the place where it was shot.

Were any exotic animals still at Tipperary?
ABC News reported in 2018 that there were no exotic animals left at Tipperary by the time manager David Warriner arrived in 2007. Station manager David Connolly told ABC, “there are none, they were given away.” This describes the station at the time of those accounts; it is not a current animal census or a complete record of every animal’s subsequent whereabouts.
