What Happens During a Cat Adoption and What Fees Cover

Cat adoption usually involves matching, an application, medical-record review, payment, and a safe handoff. Fees vary by organization and may cover exams, vaccines, spay/neuter, parasite treatment, microchipping, food, supplies, and follow-up support—so confirm the individual cat’s completed and pending care.

Cat adoption is usually a matching, paperwork, and handover process rather than a single universal event. You review available cats, discuss whether one fits your household, complete the organization’s required steps, confirm what medical care is finished or still due, pay a locally set fee, and take the cat home with records and care instructions. The fee commonly helps fund veterinary treatment, sterilization, vaccinations, food, and care for other animals, but every shelter or rescue sets its own package and price.

The examples and guidance below are from U.S. organizations. Policies, fees, age thresholds, promotions, and included supplies can change, so treat a shelter’s current instructions and the individual cat’s records as authoritative.

What the adoption process usually looks like

ASPCA describes adoption procedures as organization-specific: some groups can complete an adoption the same day, while others require an appointment, an application review, or additional time. A rescue may use a conversation and home requirements instead of a shelter’s walk-in process. Before traveling, check the organization’s current instructions, hours, eligibility rules, and whether the cat you want is still available.

1. Browse cats and read the available information

Start with the organization’s website or an in-person visit. A pet biography may describe age, personality, activity level, history, health information, and needs. Treat a biography as a starting point, not a complete medical guarantee. Ask staff which details are documented, which are observations, and which remain unknown.

  • "Toys for pets, of textile materials". Mostly used as a Toy of Fabric Pet Home for pets playing and relaxing.

2. Discuss whether the cat fits your home

Tell the staff about your household: children, other cats or dogs, work schedule, housing rules, experience with cats, and the type of interaction you can provide. The organization may recommend a particular match, explain known behavioral or medical needs, or set home requirements for an individual animal. SPCA of Texas says it shares known information and may make behavioral recommendations or establish requirements for particular adoptions.

Ask to meet the cat when possible, but remember that shelter behavior can differ from behavior in a quiet home. A shy cat may need time to approach; a social cat may be stressed by the facility. Ask how the cat has behaved with people, other animals, handling, litter boxes, and routine changes.

3. Complete the organization’s required steps

Depending on the organization, this can include an application, identification and housing verification, an appointment, counseling, an adoption agreement, or a waiting period. Some facilities allow walk-ins and same-day adoptions; others review applications before scheduling a meeting or require landlord approval. Follow the current process for that specific organization instead of relying on another shelter’s rules.

4. Review the cat’s care, records, and remaining needs

Before paying, ask for an itemized explanation of completed and pending care. Confirm vaccines and dates, parasite treatments, testing, microchip details, sterilization status, medications, diet, and any follow-up appointment. Obtain the veterinary records the organization provides and learn how to update the microchip registration. If the cat is too young for a vaccine or surgery, ask who is responsible for arranging it, by what deadline, and whether any later cost is included.

5. Pay the fee and arrange a safe pickup

Fees can vary by organization, the cat’s age, promotions, and local policy. Confirm accepted payment methods, what supplies are provided, and whether a carrier is included. Transport the cat in a secured carrier; never carry a cat loose in a vehicle. Some shelters release cats only after required surgery or paperwork is complete, while others provide a date for a pending service.

6. Bring the cat home and allow decompression

Set up a quiet room or defined area before pickup. Provide food and water bowls, a litter box, and a hiding place. Keep doors and windows secured, let the cat approach at its own pace, and avoid introducing the entire household immediately. Arrange care with a nearby veterinarian shortly after adoption, bringing the shelter records to the appointment.

What an adoption fee is intended to pay for

ASPCA says adoption fees help organizations pay for veterinary care, spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and food, while also supporting care for other animals. The fee is therefore a contribution to an organization’s care program, not a standardized national bill of materials. There is no authoritative national average fee or fixed percentage of costs recovered through fees established by the sources here.

A fee may cover services already completed, services scheduled after adoption, supplies, and post-adoption support. The exact combination differs even between organizations in the same region. A lower fee does not prove that less care was provided, and a higher fee does not prove that every possible service was included. Compare the actual package and the individual cat’s records.

Common medical and practical inclusions

  • Physical examination or health evaluation.
  • Core feline vaccines, with boosters based on age and veterinary protocol.
  • Rabies vaccination when the cat is old enough under that organization’s policy.
  • Spay or neuter surgery, either completed before release or arranged as a pending service.
  • Microchip implantation and, sometimes, registration instructions or assistance.
  • Flea, tick, mite, or internal-parasite treatment.
  • Testing such as FIV or feline leukemia testing, when the organization offers it.
  • Veterinary records, transition food, a temporary carrier, or a limited follow-up examination.
  • Behavioral guidance, return support, or other post-adoption help.

Not every package includes every item. Age, medical condition, availability of a test, and the shelter’s program all affect what is done.

Published fee examples: why local details matter

The following schedules illustrate variation; they are not national prices or recommended amounts. They were published by the named organizations and should be checked again before adoption.

The differing rabies thresholds on two SPCA of Texas pages show why an adopter should not infer eligibility from a general list. Ask to see the cat’s record and ask which service, if any, remains due.

How to compare two shelters or two cats

Compare the package rather than the headline price. Use the same questions for each organization so that a lower number is not mistaken for a lower total cost.

  1. Completed versus pending care: Identify surgery, vaccines, tests, parasite treatment, examination, and microchip work that is finished. Record the date and the next due date.
  2. Age-specific status: Check whether the cat is old enough for rabies vaccination, boosters, or sterilization, and who handles any remaining service.
  3. Records and identification: Confirm that you receive veterinary records and know how to register or update the microchip.
  4. Known needs and household fit: Compare disclosed medical or behavioral information, interaction requirements, and compatibility with your home.
  5. Full financial obligation: Include the adoption fee, follow-up veterinary visits, medications, future boosters, and any service expressly excluded.
  6. Support and supplies: Note return policies, post-adoption advice, a free examination, starter food, a carrier, insurance information, or other assistance.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What exactly is included in this cat’s fee, and which services are still pending?
  • Which vaccines and tests has this cat received, on what dates, and when are boosters due?
  • Has the cat been spayed or neutered? If not, what appointment, deadline, and cost apply?
  • Is the microchip registered, and what steps update the contact details to my name?
  • What medical, medication, or behavioral information is known, and what remains uncertain?
  • How has the cat behaved around children, cats, dogs, handling, and litter boxes?
  • What food is the cat eating now, and can I take a small amount home for a gradual change?
  • Is a carrier, starter food, temporary insurance, or follow-up veterinary examination included?
  • Who should I contact if the cat becomes ill, will not eat, hides continuously, or shows another adjustment concern?
  • What are the organization’s return or rehoming procedures if the match cannot safely continue?

SPCA of Texas cautions that even rigorous veterinary and behavioral screening cannot guarantee that a new or previously unknown medical or behavioral condition will never appear. A clear answer about uncertainty is more useful than a promise of certainty.

Prepare your home before pickup

Create a quiet base camp

Choose a low-traffic room with a closable door. Put the litter box away from food and water, add a hiding option, and keep cords, toxic plants, chemicals, and small ingestible objects out of reach. A quiet base gives the cat a controlled place to decompress before exploring more of the home.

Gather only the essentials

  • Food and water bowls.
  • The food the cat currently eats, or a small supply from the shelter for a gradual transition.
  • A litter box, litter, and a scoop.
  • A secure cat carrier for transport and future veterinary visits.
  • A scratching post and a few toys, introduced as the cat becomes comfortable.

ASPCA recommends bowls, a litter box, a quiet place, pet-proofing, and arranging veterinary care soon after adoption; toys and a scratching post are optional preparation items. SPCA of Texas lists a temporary carrier in its cat package, so check before buying one.

The first days after adoption

Keep the cat in the prepared room initially and allow voluntary contact. Sit quietly, speak softly, and avoid pulling the cat from a hiding place unless safety requires it. Maintain the shelter’s feeding routine where practical. Change foods gradually with guidance from the shelter or veterinarian, because an abrupt change can add digestive upset to an already stressful transition.

Monitor eating, drinking, urination, stool, breathing, energy, and the appearance of the eyes, nose, skin, and surgical site if a recent procedure was performed. Use the discharge instructions for urgent thresholds, medication, and activity restrictions. Schedule the post-adoption veterinary visit promptly and bring every record supplied by the organization.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming every shelter follows the same timeline

There is no universal application, appointment, eligibility, or same-day rule. Read the organization’s current instructions and call if the website and staff give different information.

Reading a fee as a guarantee of lifelong health

The fee funds preparation and care; it cannot rule out conditions that emerge later. Ask what screening was performed, what was observed, and what signs require veterinary attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving with an unclear list of future costs

Before payment, write down pending surgery, boosters, tests, medications, rechecks, and deadlines. Confirm whether the organization pays, whether the service must be completed with its veterinarian, or whether you will pay separately.

  • Top door can swing open to the left or right for easy access and convenience
  • Plenty of ventilation on sides, top, and back of the carrier

Ignoring age differences

Young cats may not yet qualify for rabies vaccination or may need additional boosters. The SPCA of Texas pages demonstrate that even an organization’s own published age descriptions can differ. Verify the cat-specific record rather than applying a generic age rule.

Taking the cat home without a safe carrier or quiet room

Arrange secure transport and a prepared decompression area first. If the shelter does not provide a carrier, obtain one before pickup; never transport a cat loose in a car.

What to expect from the fee after adoption

Some organizations provide a limited follow-up examination, support contact, starter supplies, or temporary benefits; others do not. Ask how long each benefit lasts and what exclusions apply. ASPCA notes that pet insurance can be considered for veterinary budgeting, but waiting periods and pre-existing-condition exclusions matter, and availability and terms vary. Treat any insurance reference in an adoption package as a benefit to verify, not as a substitute for understanding your ongoing veterinary responsibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your continuing costs can include routine examinations, future vaccines, parasite prevention, food, litter, medications, emergency care, and replacement supplies. The adoption fee covers the organization’s stated package at the time of adoption; it does not establish a fixed lifetime cost for the cat.

A practical handover checklist

  • Adoption agreement and receipt.
  • Veterinary and vaccination records.
  • Spay/neuter status and any surgery instructions.
  • Microchip number and registration steps.
  • Medication, diet, and behavior notes.
  • Next vaccine, recheck, or surgery date.
  • Contact information for post-adoption questions.
  • Carrier, food, tags, or other supplies promised in the package.
  • A safe route home and a prepared quiet room.

Once these details are clear, the adoption fee is easier to evaluate: you know what care it funded, what support is available, and which responsibilities begin when the cat enters your home.
