If your dog may have swallowed or inhaled a porcupine quill, call a veterinarian and arrange an examination now—even if your dog seems fine. Quills are barbed and can lodge in or migrate through tissue. If your dog is struggling to breathe, go to the nearest emergency animal hospital immediately. Do not induce vomiting, probe the throat, or try to remove a quill you cannot see.
Why a swallowed or inhaled quill is urgent
A quill that disappears into a dog’s mouth may be hidden in the mouth or throat, or may have entered the airway or tissues involved in swallowing. A veterinary case report documented quills in a dog’s larynx, throat muscles, oropharynx, around and within the tracheal wall, and in tissue adjacent to and within the esophageal wall. Those locations show what can happen; a single case cannot tell us how often it happens or predict an individual dog’s outcome. Read the case report.
There is no established home treatment for a suspected swallowed or inhaled porcupine quill. Contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting to see whether symptoms develop. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises immediate veterinary care for porcupine quill injuries and an examination for hidden quills, including in the mouth and throat: Cornell’s guidance on porcupine quill injuries.

- Noisy breathing, such as wheezing, snorting, or whistling
- Blue-tinged gums or muzzle
- Weakness or collapse

What to do while arranging veterinary care
- Call a veterinarian now. Explain that a quill may have been swallowed or inhaled, describe any breathing or swallowing signs, and follow the clinic’s instructions about where to go.
- Keep your dog calm and limit rubbing or pawing. An Elizabethan collar may help protect the face from rubbing if one is available and your dog tolerates it. It does not treat an internal quill and must not delay the call or trip.
- Go for an examination even if your dog appears normal. Quills may be difficult to see, and a normal appearance does not rule out a hidden injury.
What not to do at home
- Do not induce vomiting. The veterinary sources reviewed do not recommend it for a suspected quill ingestion; seek professional assessment instead.
- Do not reach blindly into the throat or probe for a quill. You may not be able to see where it is lodged. Leave examination and removal to a veterinarian.
- Do not pull out or cut embedded quills. Removal can be painful, and quills may break, splinter, or be pushed deeper. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that safe removal generally requires sedation or general anesthesia and pain relief: VCA’s guidance on porcupine quills in dogs.
What the veterinarian may do
The veterinarian can examine the mouth, throat, chest, and other areas where quills may be hidden. Cornell and VCA note that complete removal is very painful without sedation or anesthesia; a small incision may be needed for deeply embedded quills. The veterinarian will decide whether imaging or other procedures are appropriate based on the suspected location and your dog’s condition.

Chest complications can require more involved treatment. A 2023 report described 25 dogs treated for porcupine quilling-associated pneumothorax—air in the space around the lungs—at two New England practices. Imaging helped identify the pneumothorax but did not locate quills in that case series, and many dogs underwent surgery. These were selected cases with a specific complication, not a forecast of what happens to every dog that encounters a porcupine. See the JAVMA case series.
Signs to watch for after treatment
Missed or retained quills can migrate days or weeks later, according to Cornell. Contact your veterinarian if you notice swelling, lameness, drooling, lethargy, difficulty eating, or trouble breathing. Follow the clinic’s instructions for monitoring and any scheduled rechecks.

What published cases can—and cannot—tell you
The 2023 JAVMA case series involved 25 dogs treated at two practices for quilling-associated pneumothorax; it was not a study of all dogs exposed to porcupines or all suspected ingestions. Quills were found in lung tissue in 19 of those 25 dogs. All 25 survived to hospital discharge, while five later needed quill removal because of ongoing migration. These outcomes describe that selected group only; they are not a general survival rate or a measure of the likelihood that a quill will be swallowed, inhaled, or migrate.
The available veterinary reports establish that quills can affect structures involved in breathing and swallowing, but they do not provide a population-level estimate of how often a dog swallows or inhales one, or what outcome to expect in an individual case. That uncertainty is a reason to have a veterinarian assess suspected internal exposure, not a reason to wait for symptoms.
