If your dog has porcupine quills in its face or mouth, arrange immediate veterinary care for safe removal. Keep your dog as calm and still as you can, and do not pull, cut, or probe at the quills. Handling them can cause pain and struggling, push quills deeper, or leave fragments behind. Cornell University’s guidance is direct: “Take your dog to a veterinarian immediately for safe removal.” (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine)
What should I do if my dog gets quilled?
- Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic and arrange immediate care. Tell them where the quills are, especially if they are in or near the mouth, nose, or eyes.
- Keep your dog quiet and limit movement. Prevent rubbing the face or pawing at the quills if you can do so without touching or disturbing them. An Elizabethan collar may help if your dog tolerates it and it can be fitted without contacting the embedded quills; it is only a temporary way to reduce rubbing, not treatment.
- Do not try to remove or manipulate the quills. Do not pull them out, cut them, or probe around the face or mouth. Removal is painful, and a dog that struggles may drive quills farther into tissue. Quills can also break or remain behind. (VCA Animal Hospitals; VCA Animal Hospitals)
- Travel for veterinary assessment without waiting to see whether the quills work themselves out. If breathing is difficult, tell the clinic immediately and seek emergency care.
Why quills in the face or mouth need urgent attention
Porcupine quills have backward-facing barbs. They can penetrate tissue and become harder to remove, and a quill that is left behind may migrate deeper. The resulting injury can cause pain, swelling, infection, or damage to sensitive areas such as the eye, chest, joints, or organs. Quills are not poisonous, according to the ASPCA; the danger comes from puncture wounds, barbs, and where the quills lodge.
Not all quills are necessarily visible. They may be inside the mouth, including under the tongue, or elsewhere on the body. Cornell says a veterinarian will examine the entire dog, including the mouth, throat, chest, and legs; the Université de Montréal Faculty of Veterinary Medicine also lists the face, nose, mouth, under the tongue, front limbs, and tail as possible locations. A Tufts veterinary case describes quills found over subsequent visits in several places, including around an eye and on the opposite side of the rib cage, illustrating why monitoring and follow-up can matter. (Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University)
What may happen at the veterinary clinic
Because removal can be painful and the dog must remain still, the veterinary team may use sedation or anesthesia. They can examine for hidden quills and remove visible and embedded ones more safely. Deeply embedded quills may require an incision; some may not be removable during the first procedure and may need monitoring. (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine; VCA Animal Hospitals)

The treatment plan depends on the number and location of quills and your dog’s condition. A veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics in some circumstances, such as when quills have been present for more than a day or an incision is needed, and pain medication may be used after removal. Ask the treating team what was found, what was removed, and whether a recheck is needed; there is no single procedure or visit schedule that applies to every dog.
After treatment: what to watch for
Follow the veterinarian’s discharge instructions and contact the clinic or return for reassessment if your dog develops swelling, lameness, drooling, lethargy, difficulty eating, or trouble breathing. These signs can indicate a retained or migrating quill or another complication. Do not wait for a scheduled follow-up if your dog is having difficulty breathing.

Keep your dog leashed or closely supervised where porcupines may be present, particularly around dawn, dusk, and nighttime, and do not let your dog chase wildlife. Cornell notes that repeat injuries are common; the ASPCA also advises leashing dogs in areas known to have porcupines.
