But there is no single safe fasting limit for every fish: species, age, health, feeding pattern, temperature and aquarium conditions all matter. Fry, juveniles and fish that are already unwell need a more careful plan.
What happens when an adult fish misses meals?
A healthy adult fish may tolerate a short gap in feeding without an obvious problem. North Carolina State University says most fish can survive days or even weeks without food in the specific context of a power outage, and research-fish guidance says a few days without feed is not overly distressful in most instances. These are broad survival observations, not a guarantee for every pet species or a recommendation to fast fish routinely.

Feeding patterns vary: some species eat once a day, some once a week, and natural grazers feed continuously. Because of those differences, a fixed number of days cannot establish what is safe for an individual aquarium. Check species-specific care guidance and consider the fish’s normal routine.
Which fish need a different plan?
Fry and juveniles
Young stock generally need small, more frequent meals than adults. A multi-day absence is therefore a greater concern for them; arrange someone familiar with their needs rather than assuming adult-fish guidance applies.

Fish with health or feeding concerns
A fish that is sick, recovering, losing condition or already refusing food should not be treated as though it were a healthy adult simply missing scheduled meals. Arrange appropriate care and investigate the appetite change before leaving it unattended.
How to plan for time away
For a short absence
If the fish is a healthy, established adult and its species-specific care permits the gap, it may not need a special feeding intervention. Keep the usual routine before departure; do not give a large meal in advance to “store up” food.

For a longer absence
Choose a plan based on the absence length, species and feeding pattern, life stage, current health and whether portions can be delivered reliably. A knowledgeable aquarium sitter may be the better choice for fry, specialized species or unwell fish. For other setups, a scheduled feeder may be an option, but test it before travel, check that it dispenses the intended portion and avoid abrupt changes to the routine. Automatic feeders are used to deliver frequent small meals in fish-rearing settings; that does not establish the accuracy of any particular consumer model.

Why not feed extra before leaving or after returning?
Uneaten food can decompose and pollute aquarium water. A large catch-up portion does not safely replace missed meals and may create a water-quality problem instead. In a power outage, North Carolina State University specifically advises against feeding because digestion uses valuable oxygen and leftover food adds nitrogen pollution; while that advice is outage-specific, avoiding excess food also matters in ordinary aquarium care.

Overfeeding can contribute to obesity, especially when the diet is unsuitable or less varied than the fish’s natural diet, according to Dr. Judilee Marrow of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Follow an appropriate routine rather than trying to compensate for an absence with extra food.
How often should aquarium fish be fed?
There is no universal schedule. UF/IFAS Extension’s general fish-nutrition guidance gives maintenance feeding of 0.5–1.0% of body weight per day and says fish should probably be fed at least five days per week. The publication year is not stated in the search result, and those broad recommendations are not a fasting-limit rule for every ornamental species. It also says one feeding per day is plenty for most pet animals, while young stock need small, more frequent meals. Use species- and life-stage-specific guidance instead of treating these figures as a prescription for every aquarium.

When is not eating a warning sign?
If a fish that normally eats stops, consider its behavior and environment rather than assuming the fast is harmless. The CDC lists not eating, abnormal swimming, spots and swelling as signs to monitor. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine also identifies hiding, surface gulping, abnormal breathing and color changes as possible signs of illness. If these signs appear or the appetite loss continues, consult a veterinarian experienced in fish medicine.
