Bobcat fever is the common name for feline cytauxzoonosis, a life-threatening infection caused by the blood parasite Cytauxzoon felis. Domestic cats usually acquire it from the bite of an infected lone star tick. If a cat develops sudden fever, profound lethargy, refuses food, turns yellow, or has trouble breathing—especially after outdoor or tick exposure—contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. The illness can deteriorate quickly, and diagnosis and treatment cannot be done safely at home.

What bobcat fever actually is

Merck Veterinary Manual describes cytauxzoonosis as “a life-threatening infectious disease of domestic cats caused by infection with a protozoan parasite.” The familiar name bobcat fever refers to the parasite’s natural wildlife host, not to a fever caused by contact with a bobcat. It is not a viral disease.

Cytauxzoon felis lives in the blood and tissues of infected animals. Bobcats can carry the parasite with little or no severe illness, allowing ticks that feed on them to acquire it. A domestic cat bitten by an infected tick can then develop the acute, often severe form of disease.

The reservoir, vector, and cat are different parts of the cycle

  • Reservoir: Bobcats commonly maintain the parasite in nature without the dramatic illness seen in many house cats.
  • Vector: The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is the primary documented route into domestic cats. Merck notes that American dog tick transmission was less effective in experimental conditions.
  • Susceptible host: Domestic cats may develop rapidly progressive cytauxzoonosis after a tick bite.

Ordinary co-housing of cats without an arthropod vector did not transmit infection in the experimental evidence summarized by Merck. That means cytauxzoonosis is best understood as tick-borne, not as an illness that normally spreads through sharing bowls, grooming, or living in the same home. Cats that survive can remain asymptomatic carriers, which is a separate wildlife-and-vector reservoir concern from routine direct contagion between household cats.

Where cats are at risk

Geography is expanding and local conditions matter

Merck reports cytauxzoonosis in domestic cats across a broadening group of southcentral and southeastern U.S. states. Cornell’s wildlife-health information describes the disease and its tick vectors moving northward. Boundaries change as tick populations and wildlife habitat change, so a state-level list can become outdated. Ask a local veterinarian about current risk in your county, particularly if your cat goes outdoors.

Exposure is linked to ticks and habitat

Risk rises when cats enter wooded areas, brush, tall vegetation, or low-density residential settings near unmanaged habitat where bobcats and ticks may occur. An outdoor cat can be bitten even when an owner never sees a tick. A single bite does not mean infection is certain, but unexplained illness after outdoor exposure warrants a lower threshold for urgent veterinary care.

Symptoms and the usual time course

Signs generally begin 5 to 14 days after transmission, with about 10 days reported as an average. Timing varies, and the first signs are easy to mistake for many other feline illnesses.

When it may occur Findings owners may notice What it means
Approximately 5–14 days after an infected tick bite Depression or lethargy, reduced appetite, fever, dehydration Early signs are nonspecific and require veterinary assessment rather than home diagnosis.
As illness progresses Jaundice (yellow gums, eyes, or skin), enlarged lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen, increasing weakness These findings can indicate severe systemic disease.
Late or critical illness Difficulty breathing, hypothermia, and an appearance of pain This is an emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention.

Warning signs that should trigger an emergency call

  • Sudden fever accompanied by marked weakness or hiding
  • Refusal to eat, especially with dehydration or worsening lethargy
  • Yellow discoloration of the gums, whites of the eyes, or skin
  • Fast, labored, or difficult breathing
  • A cat that feels unusually cold, appears painful, collapses, or cannot stand

These signs are not specific to cytauxzoonosis. They can occur with other infections, toxins, organ disease, or blood disorders. Their importance is the speed and seriousness of the possible causes—not proof that a cat has bobcat fever.

How a veterinarian confirms or assesses cytauxzoonosis

No symptom checklist can confirm or rule out bobcat fever. Tell the clinic about outdoor access, recent travel, tick findings, the date signs began, and any tick-preventive product used. That history helps the veterinarian interpret test results and decide how aggressively to treat while confirmation is pending.

  1. Immediate examination and triage. The veterinarian checks temperature, hydration, breathing, gum color, pain, lymph nodes, abdominal organs, and circulation. A severely ill cat may need stabilization before all tests are completed.
  2. Blood count and chemistry testing. Abnormal cell counts and organ-value changes can support the assessment and reveal complications, but they do not identify the parasite by themselves.
  3. Microscopic examination. Parasite forms may be found on a peripheral blood smear or in cytology from affected tissue.
  4. PCR testing. Molecular testing can detect parasite genetic material and is another diagnostic method used by veterinary laboratories.
  5. Ongoing reassessment. Results are interpreted alongside the examination and the cat’s response to supportive care. A negative or inconclusive result does not make it safe to delay care in a deteriorating cat.

Treatment and prognosis

Veterinary-directed combination therapy

Merck’s recommended treatment approach is the antiprotozoal drug atovaquone combined with the antibiotic azithromycin, together with supportive care. The veterinarian—not the owner—must select doses, timing, formulation, and monitoring. Drug instructions for another cat or another illness can be dangerous.

What survival statistics do—and do not—tell you

Source and date Reported outcome How to interpret it
Merck Veterinary Manual, updated 2026 64% survival in a large case series of cats with acute cytauxzoonosis treated with atovaquone, azithromycin, and supportive care A case-series outcome, not a guaranteed probability for an individual cat.
Cornell wildlife-health article, 2018 Reported survival improved from below 25% to closer to 60% with newer medication and faster diagnosis An older summary that is not directly interchangeable with the later Merck figure.

Historically, acute cytauxzoonosis was associated with extremely high mortality. Earlier recognition and the newer treatment protocol have made survival possible for many more cats, but the disease remains serious. Prognosis depends on how ill the cat is when treatment begins, complications, test findings, and response to care. A population statistic cannot predict one cat’s outcome.

What to do if you suspect bobcat fever

  1. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic now. Say that cytauxzoonosis is a concern and describe the cat’s breathing, temperature if known, appetite, gum color, and outdoor or tick exposure.
  2. Keep the cat calm and warm for transport. Use a carrier, minimize handling, and do not force food, water, or medication if the cat is weak or struggling to breathe.
  3. Bring useful information. Note when signs began, where the cat has been, preventive products and their dates, and any tick you removed. A photo of a tick can help if the specimen was discarded.
  4. Follow the hospital plan. Cats may need repeat examinations, blood tests, fluids, nutritional support, and medication monitoring even after they appear brighter.

Prevention: reduce tick exposure first

Limit access to tick habitat

Merck identifies keeping cats indoors and away from likely tick habitat as the best prevention strategy described. Indoor living removes many opportunities for a tick to feed. For cats that go outside, reduce contact with brush, leaf litter, tall grass, and unmanaged edges where ticks and wildlife are more likely to occur. Habitat changes can lower exposure but cannot guarantee a tick-free environment.

Use prevention only with veterinary selection

Routine tick prevention may be appropriate, but disease has occurred in cats using topical products alone. Merck cites promising results for some acaricidal approaches, including a collar containing imidacloprid and flumethrin and a topical combination of selamectin and sarolaner; it also notes that more research is needed. These findings do not establish complete protection, apply identically to every cat, or treat an infection that is already underway.

Ask a veterinarian to choose a product labeled for cats, taking into account age, weight, health conditions, other pets, local tick species, and the product’s directions. Never apply a dog-only tick product to a cat; some dog formulations can be dangerously toxic to felines.

  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal device and grasp the tick close to the skin at its attachment point.
  3. Pull straight outward with steady pressure. Do not twist, crush, burn, or coat the tick with chemicals or petroleum products.
  4. Dispose of the tick and gloves safely, then wash your hands.
  5. Check the cat and other pets for additional ticks and contact your veterinarian if the cat develops any illness.

Can a recovered cat infect other cats?

Surviving domestic cats may remain asymptomatic carriers of Cytauxzoon felis. That carrier state matters because ticks feeding on a carrier could potentially participate in the wider transmission cycle. It does not mean ordinary household contact is the usual route of infection. Discuss outdoor access, tick control, and follow-up testing with your veterinarian, especially in a multi-cat home in an affected region.

What owners cannot determine at home

  • You cannot identify an infected tick by appearance alone.
  • You cannot diagnose cytauxzoonosis from fever, appetite loss, or a yellow color without laboratory evaluation.
  • You cannot judge severity by whether a cat is still drinking or briefly seems brighter.
  • You cannot safely substitute human pain relievers, leftover antibiotics, or another pet’s medication for the prescribed protocol.
  • You cannot assume an indoor cat is infected merely because a household member found a tick; monitor closely and ask a veterinarian what observation or testing is appropriate.

Prompt veterinary assessment is the decisive step when a cat has compatible signs. Bobcat fever is a rapidly progressive, tick-borne disease, but timely diagnosis, atovaquone–azithromycin treatment, and intensive supportive care have improved the chance of survival.
