Choose a commercially prepared food labeled complete and balanced for the cat’s life stage, then weigh what the cats will eat, what you can supply consistently, and what can be handled safely outdoors. Wet and dry food can both work.
How to choose food for feral cats
Start with nutritional adequacy, not a premium-sounding ingredient claim. Look for a statement on the package that the food is complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage. Cornell advises comparing package labels and explains that commercial cat foods are formulated to provide appropriate nutrients and calories. Cornell’s guide to feeding your cat is a useful overview.

- Check the life stage: Adult-cat food is intended for adults; kittens and cats who are pregnant or nursing may need different feeding guidance.
- Compare feeding directions: Use the package directions as a starting point and consider how much the food costs per usable serving.
- Consider acceptance and availability: A food the colony eats and you can obtain reliably is more practical than one that strains your budget or is often unavailable.
- Plan for outdoor conditions: Think about how long the food can safely sit out in your local weather, and provide clean water whatever format you choose.
There is no controlled brand comparison in the available guidance that establishes a best-value or objectively best brand for feral cats. Online ratings, anecdotes about a particular colony, premium pricing, or a ranked ingredient list do not establish that one brand is best.

Either can be a reasonable choice. Alley Cat Allies says dry food is just as nutritious as canned food, while Cornell notes that wet cat food typically contains 70 to 80 percent water. That moisture can be useful, but neither source identifies one format as universally best.

| Format | Potential advantage | Outdoor consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Wet food | Typically contains 70 to 80 percent water, according to Cornell. | Remove uneaten food within 30 minutes; it can freeze in cold weather. |
| Dry food | Less likely to freeze than wet food, making it more practical in freezing conditions. | Still provide clean water daily and remove leftovers as part of a clean feeding routine. |
The water-content figure is descriptive information from Cornell Feline Health Center’s feeding-frequency guidance; the page does not state a publication year. The comparison is about practical trade-offs, not a claim that one type meets every cat’s needs better.
How much should you feed?
Alley Cat Allies gives an approximate adult community-cat starting point of 5.5 ounces of wet food and 2 ounces of dry food per cat per day, or about half a cup per day if feeding only dry. The organization says needs vary, so treat those amounts as field guidance—not an individual medical prescription. Adjust based on what the cats actually eat.

As an observation rule, Alley Cat Allies says cats finishing within 15 minutes may need more, while food still left after 30 minutes may mean you are offering too much. These are practical cues, not a substitute for individualized advice when a cat’s health or body condition is a concern.

Set up a clean, predictable routine
- Choose a regular time and location. Alley Cat Allies recommends feeding regularly, preferably during daylight, at one maintained feeding location.
- Offer an appropriate portion. Start with the adult-cat estimate if applicable, then observe how quickly the food is eaten and whether leftovers remain.
- Remove uneaten food within 30 minutes. This helps keep the area clean and reduces the chance of attracting pests.
- Provide clean water every day. Food format does not remove the need for accessible fresh water.

Adjust feeding for cold weather
Dry food is less likely to freeze than wet food. In winter, Alley Cat Allies recommends refreshing food and water daily or twice daily and suggests warmed food or water, or heated bowls, to help prevent freezing. The guidance does not give a universal amount by which to increase food in cold weather, so adjust based on the cats’ needs and what they eat rather than applying an invented fixed increase. Its cold-weather tips for outdoor cats cover additional seasonal measures.

The portion estimate here is for adult community cats. Do not treat it as a prescription for kittens, pregnant or nursing cats, or cats who are ill, injured, or known to have a medical condition; their needs may differ. A general feeding guide cannot diagnose a problem or determine an individual cat’s calorie requirements.

For a basic nutrition principle, the ASPCA notes that cats need meat-based diets because taurine is found only in animal-based protein. See its cat nutrition tips.
