French Bulldogs became exceptionally popular in the UK, but demand can put pressure on responsible breeding while the breed’s short-muzzled anatomy is linked to breathing and other health concerns. The evidence is not that every Frenchie is ill—or that the risks have been solved. It points instead to variation between dogs, the value of health screening, and the need to choose and care for an individual dog with its breathing and structure in mind.
Why are French Bulldogs so popular?
Their compact size, distinctive faces and affectionate appeal have made French Bulldogs much loved pets. Popularity, however, can grow faster than responsible breeding capacity. In its 2023 UK report, the Royal Kennel Club said health-focused responsible breeders could not produce enough puppies to meet rapidly rising demand, creating opportunities for commercial puppy farmers and inexperienced breeders. That is the report’s description of a market pressure, not a claim that all breeders cut corners.

The report said UK French Bulldog registrations had risen 764% over the ten years preceding its publication. It also said registrations had peaked and were falling at the time: Labrador registrations had overtaken French Bulldogs in the period it covered. What health problems can French Bulldogs have?
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic: their short muzzles and flattened faces result from differences in skull growth. The degree of shortening and the dog’s overall shape vary, so a breed label or appearance alone cannot diagnose a health problem. The Royal Kennel Club identifies several concerns associated with this anatomy:

These are risks, not a prediction that any particular dog will develop them. The Royal Kennel Club stresses that not every flat-faced dog has these problems and that risk varies with structure. Its overview of brachycephalic health issues explains the concerns in more detail.
Are French Bulldogs healthy, and what do the latest figures show?
A Royal Kennel Club announcement dated 13 May 2026 reported results from an analysis of more than 4,000 Respiratory Function Grading assessments across Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs. It reported BOAS prevalence of 16–20% in the study sample across those three breeds. That is a pooled figure, not a French Bulldog-only estimate, and it describes the registered population analyzed—not every dog in the UK or elsewhere.

The same announcement reported respiratory-function heritability estimates of 22–45% in the analyzed breeds. Heritability describes how much variation in a measured trait within a study population is associated with genetic differences; it does not mean that an individual dog has a 22–45% chance of BOAS. The findings suggest that selective breeding could help improve respiratory function, while not guaranteeing a healthy outcome for every puppy.

What is BOAS, and how can screening help?
BOAS is an airway condition that can impair normal breathing. A dog’s short muzzle may be associated with airway narrowing, but appearance alone cannot show how well that dog breathes. The Royal Kennel Club’s Respiratory Function Grading scheme uses standardized examination and exercise testing to assess respiratory function. Its May 2026 update described pairings involving a Grade 2 dog as “red” (not recommended) under the scheme. Breeding advice can change, so breeders should check the live protocol rather than rely on an older summary.
For French Bulldogs, the Royal Kennel Club lists BOAS breathing testing as its minimum recommended pre-breeding test. Its best-practice list also includes hereditary cataract DNA testing, elbow testing, eye testing and hip testing. These are screening recommendations for breeding decisions, not diagnoses or a treatment plan for a pet. The 2026 analysis announcement quotes geneticist and lead author Dr Joanna Ilska: “Our findings provide clear evidence that respiratory health in these breeds is influenced by genetic differences between dogs, and importantly, that improvement is achievable through selective breeding.”

How can you choose a healthier French Bulldog?
No screening result guarantees that a puppy will be unaffected. It can, however, give you more useful information than appearance or reassurance alone. When speaking with a breeder, look for independently checkable results and ask how they inform breeding choices.

- Ask about the other tests on the Royal Kennel Club’s French Bulldog best-practice list: hereditary cataract DNA, elbow, eye and hip testing.
- Discuss the parents’ breathing and function, not just how short their muzzles look. A breed label or a cute appearance is not a substitute for evidence about an individual dog.
- Be cautious if a seller cannot provide checkable screening information or seems to prioritize exaggerated features over health.
Screening-informed breeding and breeding decisions based on appearance alone are not equivalent: standardized health information can guide choices in ways that appearance cannot. Still, screening reduces uncertainty rather than eliminating it. For a dog already in your care, focus on that dog’s observed function and anatomy rather than assuming its health from the breed name. If you are concerned about signs of ill health, the Royal Kennel Club advises seeking veterinary advice promptly.
