The 170 cm Micrurus frontalis specimen
The largest individual measurement in the available literature is a male Micrurus frontalis reported in 2023 by the Brazilian Journal of Biology. The snake was donated to the Butantan Institute in Brazil in 2009. It measured 112 cm and weighed 145 g when it entered captivity. During 3,123 days in care, it grew to 170 cm and 978 g before dying in 2017.
The authors describe this as a length, weight and longevity record for the species. They also state that earlier literature had listed 164 cm as the maximum length for M. frontalis. The new measurement therefore exceeds the previously cited species maximum by 6 cm. It remains a report about one captive animal, however, rather than an independently audited record across all coral snakes.

What the measurements represent
The reported value is total length, the conventional nose-to-tail measurement used in the paper. The article does not establish that every comparison species was measured with the same equipment, handling procedure or definition of total length. That matters because small differences in how a flexible snake is straightened or how the tail tip is aligned can affect a final figure.
The animal also spent most of its documented life in captivity. Captive growth can differ from growth in the wild because food supply, temperature, activity and health are controlled. The specimen’s long survival and weight gain make the record biologically interesting, but they do not show that wild M. frontalis routinely reach the same size.
Where this species occurs
Micrurus frontalis is a South American coral snake distributed across parts of Brazil and southern Paraguay. The Butantan Institute kept the reported animal and used its venom in work connected with Brazilian antielapidic serum production. That institutional context explains why a detailed long-term measurement exists; it does not turn the animal into a representative sample of every population.

Micrurus ancoralis
The Instituto Nacional de Salud in Colombia lists 151 cm as the largest reported individual for M. ancoralis, with the snake’s sex unspecified. The same profile gives separate maxima of 114.6 cm for males and 148.6 cm for females. Those sex-specific values illustrate why a single species figure can conceal meaningful variation: the largest listed female is considerably longer than the largest listed male.
Because the profile does not provide a shared verification protocol with the Brazilian paper, its 151 cm figure should remain a species-profile report rather than being ranked as though both snakes were measured under identical conditions.
Micrurus surinamensis
The Colombian health institute describes M. surinamensis as capable of reaching 1.4 m. It is characterized as a large, robust coral snake associated with aquatic habits and a fish-based diet. Those adaptations distinguish it from the terrestrial image many people have of coral snakes and help explain why body form and habitat should be considered alongside length.

Harlequin Coralsnake
The Florida Museum of Natural History’s Harlequin Coralsnake guide records a maximum length of 47.5 inches, or 120.7 cm. Typical adults are much shorter at 20–30 inches (51–76 cm). This is a useful North American comparison, but it is not a global coral-snake maximum and should not be presented as one.
Why there is no universally accepted largest coral snake
Coral snakes are not one species. They are a diverse group of venomous elapid snakes, and maximum size varies among species, populations and individual animals. A claim that one snake is the largest ever would require comparable records from across that diversity.
- Different evidence categories: A captive animal measurement, a profile’s species maximum and a regional record are not interchangeable.
- Different measurement methods: The sources do not describe one shared protocol for straightening the snake, locating the snout and tail tip, or deciding how to handle curvature.
- Different verification standards: The cited material does not report independent witnesses, museum-voucher checks or an all-species record body that audited every candidate.
- Wild versus captive conditions: Long-term captive care can permit growth and survival that are rarely documented in free-ranging snakes.
- Sex and age effects: The M. ancoralis profile’s separate male and female maxima show that sex can influence the largest observed size.

For those reasons, the defensible wording is that a 170 cm captive male M. frontalis is the largest reported individual measurement identified here. It is not defensible to call it a certified all-species world record.

There is no useful single answer without naming the species and the context. The reported values in the table span roughly 1.2 to 1.7 m, but they represent different animals and source types. A reader asking about a snake seen outdoors should not assume that the longest published specimen is a normal adult size.

Typical size versus maximum size
Maximum length is an upper-end observation. It does not describe the average adult. The Harlequin Coralsnake guide, for example, places ordinary adults at 20–30 inches while separately listing a 47.5-inch record. The same distinction applies to the South American species: an exceptional individual or an upper profile limit should not be used to estimate every snake in the field.
Why total length is used
Snake researchers commonly report total length because it captures the entire body from snout to tail tip. A snake’s body can bend, contract or extend during measurement, so a number is meaningful only when the method and conditions are known. Comparisons are strongest when animals are measured in the same way and documented by the same institution.

Those details make the paper valuable for understanding growth, husbandry and venom research. They still leave open questions about how large wild members of the species can become and whether another species has produced a larger, similarly documented individual.
Why size alone cannot identify a coral snake
Length is a poor field-identification shortcut. Coral-snake species can overlap in size, and a juvenile of a larger species may be shorter than an adult of a smaller one. Color bands, head shape, geography and habitat can matter, but visual identification of a venomous snake is risky, especially when a person is close enough to inspect details.

The reported candidates also occupy different environments. M. frontalis occurs in parts of Brazil and southern Paraguay, while M. surinamensis is associated with aquatic adaptations. A snake’s location can narrow possibilities, but it does not make handling safe or turn a size estimate into a reliable record.
What to do if you encounter a large coral snake
Do not approach, corner, capture or stretch the snake to estimate its length. The Florida Museum advises leaving a Harlequin Coralsnake alone because coral snakes are venomous and can be dangerous.
- Move away slowly and give the snake a clear path to leave.
- Keep children and pets back; do not allow anyone to poke the animal with a stick or container.
- Use a safe distance and, only if it can be done without approaching, note the general location and appearance for authorities.
- Do not rely on a photograph or a color rule to decide whether a bite is serious.
- After any suspected bite, seek immediate medical care. Do not wait for swelling or other symptoms to appear.
Professional wildlife responders can deal with a snake safely. A private attempt to obtain a measurement creates unnecessary bite risk and would not provide the independent verification needed for a scientific record.
How to interpret future claims of a record coral snake
A new headline may report a very long snake, but readers can assess its strength by checking a few specific details:
- Is the species identified by a qualified source, rather than only by a common name?
- Is the length tied to a named individual, or is it merely a general statement that the species can reach a certain size?
- Was the animal captive or wild, and is that context stated next to the number?
- Does the report define total length and explain how the snake was measured?
- Was the figure independently verified, preserved as a museum voucher or compared with previous literature?
- Does the claim compare like with like, or does it combine a regional record with a species maximum from another continent?
Until those questions are answered consistently, the safest ranking remains provisional. The 170 cm M. frontalis measurement is a strong documented candidate, while the other published values are important species-specific comparisons rather than evidence of a single global champion.

The best-supported answer is a captive male Micrurus frontalis measured at 170 cm in a 2023 Brazilian Journal of Biology report.
