It is the sole living species in its genus and a living relative of the dodo—not the only manumea left alive. The species remains Critically Endangered.
What bird is the “last survivor of the dodo’s family”?
It is the manumea, also called the tooth-billed pigeon. This forest bird is endemic to Samoa, meaning it is native to—and naturally found only in—that Pacific island nation. Conservation sources identify it as the only living member of the genus Didunculus and a relative of the extinct dodo.
That family connection is sometimes compressed into headlines calling the manumea a “little dodo.” It is not a surviving dodo or a dodo descendant in the sense of a bird that evolved directly from the dodo. It is a distinct living pigeon related to it.
What was reported in Uafato in 2025?
Indian Defence Review reported that a Samoa Conservation Society survey in Uafato, conducted from 17 October to 13 November 2025, recorded five manumea sightings. The outlet says observers saw birds through binoculars. Its report quotes project coordinator Moeumu Uili describing the team’s concern that they might fail to find the bird.

The figure is a report of sightings, not a count of five individual birds or a new population census. The available account does not provide the full survey methodology or individual observation records, so the five sightings should be attributed to the outlet rather than treated as a independently verified population estimate. Was the manumea rediscovered?
No. The 2025 report was not the first recent confirmed sighting. The IUCN Specialist Group’s 2024–2025 report records a confirmed sighting in March 2024, and its newsletter describes a clear sighting at the edge of Uafato Conservation Area that month, followed by another expedition in August 2024. The later 2025 sightings are newsworthy, but they do not mark the bird’s rediscovery after presumed extinction. IUCN Specialist Group annual report · IUCN Specialist Group newsletter

How many manumea are left?
No single, uncontested current population count is established by the available sources. The IUCN Red List page for BirdLife International’s assessment, assessed in 2016 and published in 2019, gives an estimate of 50–249 mature individuals. The page explicitly says that assessment is not the latest, so its range should be read as a historical assessment rather than a current headcount. IUCN Red List assessment
Samoa Conservation Society’s project page says fewer than 250 individuals, attributing that figure to BirdLife International in 2024. Samoa’s 2023 environment report describes the population as extremely small and sightings as rare, without giving a number in the cited passage. These figures differ in date and source, so they should not be combined into a more precise present-day count. Why is the manumea endangered?
The manumea is classified as Critically Endangered. Samoa Conservation Society identifies habitat loss, hunting, and invasive species among the threats. The government’s 2023 environment report also lists the bird among critically endangered species and describes sightings as rare. A sighting confirms that a bird was observed; on its own, it does not show that the population is increasing or that these pressures have eased.

Samoa Conservation Society says its Manumea Conservation Project began in 2021, building on a 2019 campaign strategy and the 2020–2029 recovery plan. Its work includes monitoring, community engagement, awareness campaigns, and implementing the national plan. In July 2026, BirdLife International announced that the society had joined as its 125th partner and described that conservation work. BirdLife International announcement

Continued monitoring matters because occasional observations and broad estimates answer different questions: sightings show that manumea are still being encountered, while population assessment requires evidence that can support an estimate of how many remain and how that number changes. The reported Uafato observations are encouraging confirmation of presence, but not proof of recovery.
