Utah’s official state animal is the elk. Utah Code § 63G-1-601(1) states, “Utah’s state animal is the elk.” Utah’s Online Public Library identifies that animal more specifically as the Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis).
The phrase “8 official state animals of Utah” is therefore misleading if it means eight animals in one legal category. Utah has one state animal. The other animals often included in roundups are official symbols in separate categories such as state bird, bird of prey, crustacean, fish, insect and dinosaur.

Utah has one official state animal
The direct answer to “What is Utah’s state animal?” is the elk. The wording in Utah Code § 63G-1-601(1) is unambiguous: “Utah’s state animal is the elk.” The statute does not establish a list of eight animals under the heading “state animal.”
Utah’s Online Public Library gives the statutory animal’s fuller identification as the Rocky Mountain elk, with the scientific name Cervus canadensis. That distinction is useful: the law uses the everyday name “elk,” while the library entry identifies the animal represented by that common name.

The designation dates to 1971. According to the state library, the Utah Legislature selected the elk in an act signed by Governor Calvin Rampton on February 1, 1971. The library also records that legislators considered other candidates, including the Utah prairie dog, mule deer, mink and mustang.
In legal terms, the elk designation answers the question by itself. A separate animal can be an official state symbol without becoming Utah’s “state animal,” because Utah assigns different animals to different statutory categories.
Why some lists say “eight state animals”
The number eight appears to come from combining several kinds of animal-related symbols into one informal list. That approach can be useful for a general overview of Utah symbols, but it changes the meaning of “state animal.” It treats a bird, a fish, an insect and a dinosaur as though they were additional state animals, even though each belongs to its own category.
The official sources identified for Utah’s symbols document the elk plus six other named animal categories: state bird, state bird of prey, state crustacean, state fish, state insect and state dinosaur. That produces seven documented animals across seven categories, not eight animals in the state-animal category. No official source in those materials establishes an eight-animal statutory list.

Because the eighth entry cannot be verified from the state’s current symbol designations, it should not be invented to make a headline’s number work. A reliable explanation should say exactly what is established: Utah has one state animal, and it has several additional animal symbols under different headings.
Utah’s documented animal-related symbols
The table separates each animal from the legal or official category in which Utah recognizes it. Only the first row is Utah’s state animal.
| Official category | Animal | What the designation means |
|---|---|---|
| State animal | Elk (Rocky Mountain elk, Cervus canadensis) | The sole animal named as Utah’s state animal in Utah Code § 63G-1-601(1). |
| State bird | California seagull | Utah’s official bird; it is not a second state animal under the statutory category. |
| State bird of prey | Golden eagle | The raptor designated for the separate bird-of-prey category. |
| State crustacean | Brine shrimp | The crustacean recognized in Utah’s state-symbol list. |
| State fish | Bonneville cutthroat trout | Utah’s designated fish, a category distinct from the state animal. |
| State insect | Honey bee | The insect listed as Utah’s official state insect. |
| State dinosaur | Utahraptor | The dinosaur recognized in its own prehistoric-animal category. |
Utah.gov’s state-symbols page groups these designations by category, while Utah Code supplies the controlling wording for the state-animal question. Reading the categories separately prevents a common error: calling every animal on a state-symbol page a “state animal.”

What the law says
Utah Code § 63G-1-601(1) uses the short, ordinary-language designation “the elk.” That is the authoritative answer for the singular state-animal title. The Rocky Mountain elk identification supplied by Utah’s Online Public Library adds species context without changing the legal wording.

When Utah adopted the designation
The state library dates the designation to an act of the Utah State Legislature in 1971, signed by Governor Calvin Rampton on February 1 of that year. Its historical note says lawmakers considered several alternatives, including the Utah prairie dog, mule deer, mink and mustang, before the elk was selected.
How to describe it accurately
Use “Utah’s state animal is the elk” when answering the direct question. “Rocky Mountain elk” is an appropriate fuller description when species precision is useful. Do not imply that the four animals considered during the legislative process became official symbols; consideration is not enactment.
Other official symbols, category by category
California seagull — state bird
The California seagull belongs to Utah’s state bird designation. It is therefore an official Utah animal symbol, but it does not compete with or supplement the elk in the legal category “state animal.” A list can include both animals only if it labels their categories clearly.

The golden eagle is Utah’s state bird of prey. “Bird of prey” is a narrower category than “state bird,” and Utah treats it separately. Utah Legislature bill SB0116 (2022) is identified as a source for the bird-of-prey designation. The golden eagle should consequently be presented as a raptor symbol, not as Utah’s second state animal.

Brine shrimp — state crustacean
Brine shrimp are listed as Utah’s state crustacean. This category demonstrates why broad animal roundups can be confusing: a crustacean is an animal in the biological sense, yet Utah’s official framework gives it a specific title rather than folding it into the state-animal designation.
Bonneville cutthroat trout — state fish
The Bonneville cutthroat trout is Utah’s state fish. Its official status answers a fish-symbol question, not the question of which animal Utah selected as its general state animal. In a comparison table, the trout belongs on its own row under “state fish.”
Honey bee — state insect
The honey bee is the official state insect. Including it in a list of Utah symbols is accurate; labeling it one of eight state animals is not, unless the writer explicitly says the list is using “animal” informally to cover several statutory categories.

Utahraptor occupies the state dinosaur category. It represents Utah’s prehistoric-animal symbol and is not evidence that Utah adopted multiple animals under the singular state-animal heading. The category label matters especially here because a dinosaur designation and a living state-animal designation serve different purposes.

Enacted symbols versus proposed designations
Utah’s legislative records also show why a bill number should not automatically be treated as a current state symbol. In 2015, SB0053 proposed the Golden Retriever as Utah’s state domestic animal. The surfaced record is an introduced bill. It supports saying that the designation was proposed, not that Utah enacted it.
The current state-symbol statute identifies the elk as the state animal. Unless a bill has become law and appears in the current official designations, it should be described as a proposal, introduction or legislative consideration. This rule keeps a proposed domestic-animal title from being added to an official list without proof of enactment.
A short timeline of Utah’s animal symbols
- 1971: The Utah Legislature’s act designating the elk as state animal was signed by Governor Calvin Rampton on February 1, according to Utah’s Online Public Library.
- 2015: SB0053 was introduced to propose the Golden Retriever as state domestic animal. An introduced bill is not, by itself, an enacted symbol.
- 2022: Utah Legislature SB0116 is identified in the state-symbol materials in connection with the state bird-of-prey designation, represented by the golden eagle.
- Current code: Utah Code § 63G-1-601(1) continues to provide the direct statutory answer: Utah’s state animal is the elk.
How to evaluate a list of Utah “state animals”
If you encounter a list promising eight official state animals, check each entry against these questions:
- What category is named? Look for “state animal,” “state bird,” “state fish” or another specific heading.
- Is the designation in current law or an official state-symbol listing? A campaign, article or bill introduction is not equivalent to an enacted symbol.
- Is the count being used consistently? A list that combines birds, insects, fish and dinosaurs should call itself a list of animal-related state symbols, not eight state animals.
- Can the claimed eighth animal be identified in an official source? If not, the number should be treated as unverified rather than filled with a guess.
- Does the wording preserve the singular statutory answer? Any accurate account must leave the elk as Utah’s state animal.
This method also explains why two pages can show different totals without the law actually conflicting: one may count only statutory categories, while another may combine broader symbols, proposals or unofficial additions.
The accurate takeaway
Utah’s official state animal is the elk, specifically identified by the state library as the Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis). Utah also recognizes a California seagull, golden eagle, brine shrimp, Bonneville cutthroat trout, honey bee and Utahraptor in separate official categories. Those designations are real, but they are not eight animals sharing one “state animal” title. The 2015 Golden Retriever measure was a proposal, not a basis for expanding the current official list.
