Garfield is a fictional character, so no breed can be verified for him. Cats.com reports that creator Jim Davis described him as a composite of different kinds of breeds. Of the breeds that article names, the Persian and the Exotic Shorthair are the closest visual matches, but neither can be declared his breed. Treat any breed pick as a comparison of looks, not a confirmed identity.
Garfield is a composite, not a documented cat
Garfield has no pedigree, registry entry, or on-screen origin story that names a breed. The most specific statement on the subject comes from the Cats.com article “8 Garfield Cat Breeds Worth Purring Over” by Amy Brown-Towry, marked last updated August 24, 2026, which attributes to Davis the view that Garfield blends several breeds. That account is secondhand. No direct interview or verbatim Davis quotation is available on the subject, so it should be read as a reported description rather than a direct quote.
Orange tabby describes a coat, not a breed
The phrase “orange tabby” tells you about color and pattern. Orange is a coat color, and tabby is a pattern that can appear on many kinds of cat, including domestic cats with no known pedigree. Within tabbies, the mackerel pattern has narrow stripes running along the body, legs, and tail, while the classic pattern has larger swirls or blotches. Garfield is drawn with orange fur and body stripes, which is a visual shorthand. It says nothing about ancestry.
PetMD’s 2008 “American Domestic” page makes the same point from the other direction: the ancestry of many domestic cats is often impossible to determine. A real orange tabby can therefore be a perfectly good match for the look of the character without belonging to any breed.

The breeds the Cats.com article names
The article’s title promises eight breeds, but the candidates it names are seven breeds plus a non-breed option. Use the list below as a set of visual candidates, not a ranked verdict.
- Munchkin: named as a candidate; the article’s description is not reproduced in the sources reviewed here.
- British Shorthair: named as a candidate; no trait details are reproduced here.
- Persian: one of the two closest visual matches (see below).
- Maine Coon: named as a candidate; no trait details are reproduced here.
- Turkish Angora: named as a candidate; no trait details are reproduced here.
- Bengal: named as a candidate; no trait details are reproduced here.
- Exotic Shorthair: one of the two closest visual matches (see below).
- Domestic orange tabby: not a breed, but the most practical choice if you want the look without a pedigree.
Persian and Exotic Shorthair: the closest visual matches
Both breeds share the features that make Garfield recognizable in the cartoon: a round face and a compact body. The difference that matters most in daily life is coat length.

Exotic Shorthair
The Exotic Shorthair has a short, dense coat. PetMD’s Exotic Shorthair guide, by Janelle Leeson and reviewed by Barri J. Morrison, DVM (updated February 6, 2024), says weekly brushing helps maintain that coat, and that brushing may need to become more frequent in spring when shedding increases. The same guide notes that the breed’s flat-faced build can contribute to breathing problems, especially when a cat carries excess weight. It also lists polycystic kidney disease among inherited concerns, and says breeder DNA testing for that condition is relevant. Questions about any individual cat’s health should go to a veterinarian.
Persian
The Persian has a long coat, and that length is the main reason it is a more demanding match. Long fur needs more regular upkeep than a short coat, so a Persian lookalike is a commitment in grooming time as well as appearance.

How to compare candidates yourself
If you are choosing a cat that resembles Garfield, compare candidates on these points rather than on the name alone:
- Coat length: short, as with the Exotic Shorthair, or long, as with the Persian, changes how much brushing you will do.
- Pattern: a true orange tabby pattern is a color and marking question that can occur on domestic cats and on various breeds.
- Face shape: the round, flat-faced look is the feature most linked to Garfield’s appearance and also the one that the PetMD guide connects to breathing concerns in the Exotic Shorthair.
- Body build: compact is the match here; check the breed-specific guidance rather than assuming size from the drawing.
- Registered breed or domestic cat: a breed gives you predictable traits and health-screening information; a domestic orange tabby gives you the look with unknown ancestry.
Cartoon personality is not breed temperament
Garfield’s personality is written for comedy. Nothing in the sources reviewed ties his behavior to any breed, so do not use the character as a guide to how a Persian, Exotic Shorthair, or any other cat will act at home. Temperament varies by individual cat, and a vet or breeder is the right source for breed-specific expectations.
