Some cats seek out laps and snuggle for long stretches. Others show attachment by greeting you at the door, following you from room to room, headbutting, or sleeping nearby. This guide covers nine breeds whose TICA or CFA profiles describe their contact style in enough detail to compare. Treat each profile as a description of breed tendencies, not a promise about any individual cat.
How to read “cuddly” before you choose
Registry descriptions cover four things that matter most when you are picking a cat for a home: how the breed seeks contact, how much activity and play it needs, how social it is and how it handles time alone, and any care issues that change day-to-day life. The table below uses only what those registries state. Where a profile says nothing on a point, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Breed | How it seeks contact | Activity and play | Sociability and time alone | Care note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Burmese | Lap-seeking; curls up on any available lap (TICA) | Not stated | Social; may become lonely when alone for long periods (TICA) | Not stated |
| Bombay | Close contact; cuddles in laps and joins family routines (TICA) | Described as lively (TICA) | Loves human interaction and being near family (TICA) | Not stated |
| Tonkinese | Lap cuddles; TICA calls them a lap cat | Enjoys games and chasing (TICA) | Sociable with children and other pets (TICA) | Not stated |
| RagaMuffin | Lap cat; snuggles with a favorite person for hours (CFA) | Can be quite playful (CFA) | People-loving; introductions with other pets need care (CFA) | Not stated |
| LaPerm | Settles in a lap; attuned to its owners (CFA) | Active (CFA) | Interactive; many crave human contact (CFA) | Not stated |
| Australian Mist | Adults prefer warm laps and family cuddles (TICA listing) | Not stated in the available listing | Sociable (TICA listing) | Not stated in the available listing |
| Sphynx | Affectionate “Velcro” lap-seeker (TICA) | Not stated | Friendly (TICA) | Not hypoallergenic; frequent bathing needed for skin oils (TICA) |
| Savannah | Not a lap cat; greets, follows, and headbutts (TICA) | Active and inquisitive (TICA) | Bonds strongly with its people (TICA) | Likes elevated places; TICA recommends cat trees and window perches |
| Bengal | Affectionate on its own terms (TICA) | Play, chasing, climbing, and investigating (TICA) | Not stated | Not stated |
Lap-seeking breeds
These breeds are the closest match for readers who want a cat that actively looks for a lap. Each profile below notes what that looks like in practice, and what the registry says about time alone.
Burmese
TICA’s profile is one of the clearest statements of the lap-seeking type: “A sweet and charming cuddler, the Burmese is an outgoing, people-oriented cat that loves to curl up on any available lap.” The same profile warns that the breed’s sociability can make long periods alone hard. If your home is empty for most of the day, a Burmese is a poor fit unless someone else can provide regular company, or you can commit to a second cat that you have checked is suitable.

Bombay
TICA describes the Bombay as a breed that loves human interaction and wants to be near family, with lap cuddling as a normal part of that. Its profile presents the breed as lively as well as affectionate, so expect a cat that wants to be in the middle of household life, not one that waits quietly on a chair for attention.
Tonkinese
The Tonkinese suits readers who want closeness and play in the same cat. TICA says the breed enjoys games and chasing and also loves lap cuddles. Its profile describes the breed as sociable with children and other pets, which makes it one of the more household-friendly options in this list.

RagaMuffin
CFA’s profile is the most specific about the lap habit. It says that while RagaMuffins can be quite playful, “most RagaMuffins are happiest living up to their ‘lap cat’ role and will snuggle up with their favorite person for hours.” The same profile notes that introductions with other pets should be managed carefully, so plan a gradual introduction if you already have animals at home.
LaPerm
CFA describes the LaPerm as an active cat that can settle into a lap and is attuned to its owners. The profile also says many cats crave human contact. Readers who want a cat that is both interactive and willing to sit with them will find the breed’s profile a reasonable match, though CFA does not describe it as a constant lap sitter.

Australian Mist
TICA’s listing describes the Australian Mist as sociable and affectionate, with adults preferring warm laps and family cuddles. The available listing is brief and does not include activity or care details, so treat it as a general description rather than a full breed profile.
Sphynx
TICA describes the Sphynx as a friendly, affectionate “Velcro” cat that seeks laps. Its hairless coat does not make it hypoallergenic, which is covered in the care section below. Many owners provide a warm resting place as a practical comfort measure, though that is a comfort consideration, not a health claim.

Affection without a lap
Some affectionate breeds show closeness in ways that are easy to miss if you expect a lap cat. These two are the clearest examples in this list.
Savannah
The Savannah is the clearest counterexample to “cuddly means lap cat.” TICA states plainly: “It is not a lap cat, but will show affection on its own terms, often by greeting family members at the door, following them around the house and giving frequent headbutts.” The breed bonds strongly and is active and inquisitive, so it needs space to climb and watch. TICA recommends cat trees and window perches for the breed, since Savannahs like elevated places. Those are enrichment choices, not tools that make a cat more affectionate.

Bengal
TICA says Bengals can be affectionate on their own terms, but their usual interests are play, chasing, climbing, and investigating. A Bengal is best thought of as a companion for an active household that enjoys interacting with a cat, rather than a breed that will spend an evening on your lap.
Care realities that change the picture
Two breed-level facts can affect daily life more than personality does, and both come from the Sphynx profile.
Quick Recap
- Allergies: A hairless cat is not automatically safe for someone with cat allergies. TICA states that Sphynx cats are not hypoallergenic. If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific breed before you commit.
- Bathing: TICA notes that Sphynx cats need frequent bathing because their skin produces oils that a coat would otherwise absorb. Budget for this as a recurring task, not an occasional one.
Matching a breed to your home
- If someone is home most of the day and enjoys close contact, the lap-seeking breeds above fit best.
- If you want affection that comes with play and a lot of movement, look at the Tonkinese, LaPerm, or Bengal sections and compare their activity notes.
- If you want a cat that greets and follows you but does not sit still for long, the Savannah profile describes that pattern.
- If you have other pets or young children, read the sociability notes for each breed and plan introductions in advance.
- If you are sensitive to cat allergens, do not rely on a hairless coat as a solution.
