There is no established set of “horse person” types that can tell you what kind of owner you are. A 2026 survey found subtle associations between owners’ reported psychological traits and how they interacted with their horses—but it does not show that one personality makes someone a better owner or predicts what a particular horse needs. The useful question is not which label fits you; it is whether your habits work for this horse.
What research says about horse owners’ habits
A University of Turku press release dated 12 June 2026 describes an international online survey of 2,239 horse owners. Researchers assessed attachment style using a Horse Attachment Questionnaire validated by the research group, and personality using the Short Five Questionnaire. Owners reported how often they rode, did groundwork, spent informal time with their horse, and used different kinds of headgear. These are self-reported associations, not evidence that a particular trait causes a particular way of handling or a welfare outcome. University of Turku’s study summary
Interaction patterns were associated with measured traits
In the survey, higher avoidant attachment scores were associated with less frequent riding, groundwork, and hands-on interaction. Higher anxious attachment scores were associated with more frequent informal quality time. Owners who rode more often tended to score slightly higher in organization, outgoingness, and emotional stability; those doing more groundwork tended to score higher in openness to new experiences. More informal, unstructured time was associated with stronger reported emotional bonds.
Owners in relationships with a horse for more than ten years were reported as about 15 percent less avoidant than owners in relationships of less than one year. That is a comparison between groups in this survey—not a causal effect, a prediction for an individual, or a measure of how well either group cared for its horses.

Headgear did not identify a “better” owner
Bitless or mixed bit-and-bitless users tended to score slightly lower in emotional distancing than owners who used only a bit; people open to both types tended to score higher in openness. The researchers note that discipline, training background, and the individual horse’s needs also shape equipment choices. Those findings do not show that one type of headgear proves greater care or produces better welfare.
Horse personality is also shaped by more than one factor
A separate 2026 study analyzed owner-rated personality information for 2,767 horses. It reported four dimensions—human sociability, horse sociability, attentiveness, and neuroticism—and associations with age, housing, riding frequency, quality time, relationship stability, and owner changes. These ratings and associations do not establish that an owner’s personality alone causes a horse’s traits. PubMed-indexed study

Reflect on your habits without turning them into a label
Use the findings as prompts for observation, not as a quiz or diagnosis. The survey does not identify a single “good owner” profile. Consider your routine in relation to the horse in front of you:
- Do most interactions happen to accomplish a task, or do you also spend relaxed time together?
- When your horse seems stressed, uncomfortable, or confused, do you pause and try to understand what the behaviour may be communicating?
- Are you willing to reconsider a familiar routine if it does not appear to suit this horse?
- Does the horse seem comfortable with the amount and kind of activity you expect?
Relaxed time may help you notice how your horse behaves outside riding and training; the survey associated informal time with stronger reported bonds. It does not establish that spending more time automatically improves care or welfare. If you want to learn more, an equine behaviour and welfare book can be a starting point for understanding behaviour and learning, not a substitute for qualified help when a problem arises.

Let the horse’s needs guide care and handling
Personality reflection matters less than whether the horse’s needs are being met. UK government guidance describes keepers’ responsibilities for suitable living conditions and diet, protection from pain, injury, suffering, and disease, and the opportunity to behave normally. The UK welfare code also identifies appropriate company as a need. UK guidance covers duties such as treatment records, vet-advised vaccination, veterinary and farrier registration, a valid passport, and a microchip; legal requirements vary by jurisdiction. Handling should be kind, calm, and attentive to behaviour and learning. Scottish Government guidance recommends avoiding rough handling and methods that cause preventable fear, distress, or pain, and using equipment that fits and is maintained correctly. It advises that saddles be fitted by a professional saddle fitter and refitted annually, ideally more often. This guidance applies in Scotland. Scottish Government: Welfare of equids

The Scottish guidance also says that, unless an applicable organization has a welfare or safety specification, a horse should not generally be ridden by someone who weighs more than 17% of the horse’s weight. This is Scottish guidance, not a universal legal standard; follow applicable local rules and seek advice from a qualified professional about a specific horse and rider.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention similarly advises matching an animal’s temperament, size, training, and activity level to a person’s capacity and purpose. Its horse guidance also recommends routine veterinary care and handwashing after horse contact and chores; those are US public-health recommendations, not horse-care laws for other countries.
