Pomeranians may weigh only a few pounds, but they are not low-effort decorative pets. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes them as inquisitive, lively, bold, alert and intelligent, with a profuse double coat and a “commanding big-dog demeanor.” Those qualities can surprise even experienced owners when they show up as loud watchdog behavior, determined escape attempts, demanding coat care or the need for careful outdoor supervision.
The 11 traits below are an editorial synthesis of breed guidance, not an official ranking or a prediction about every individual dog. A Pomeranian’s personality, health and tolerance for handling still depend on genetics, early socialization, training, environment and veterinary care.

1. A tiny body can come with a bold, big-dog manner
Small stature does not automatically produce a timid temperament. The AKC calls the Pomeranian inquisitive, lively and bold, and describes a “commanding big-dog demeanor.” That combination can make a Pom act as though it is responsible for monitoring the entire household, confronting unfamiliar sounds or taking the lead on walks.
Because the breed profile lists only 3–7 pounds, owners sometimes interpret assertive behavior as a problem to be suppressed. A better approach is to provide clear rules, reward calm choices and prevent situations in which a very small dog is expected to handle a physically dangerous confrontation. Confidence is useful; unsupervised bravado around larger dogs is not.
2. The watchdog voice can be bigger than the dog
Barking is a recognized breed characteristic, and the AKC describes Pomeranians as alert. A Pom may announce visitors, hallway noises, wildlife or a change in routine with surprising intensity. PetMD notes that excessive barking and reactive behavior can develop without appropriate socialization and training; that does not mean every Pomeranian barks excessively.

Reward a quiet pause, teach a cue such as “settle,” manage the view through windows and give the dog an alternative activity when delivery traffic or visitors arrive. Early exposure to people, sounds and calm, well-mannered dogs can reduce the chance that ordinary events become alarm rehearsals. If barking is sudden, accompanied by fear or escalating aggression, ask a qualified trainer and your veterinarian for help.
3. Intelligence does not remove the need for training
Pomeranians are alert and intelligent and can learn tricks and games, but quick learning is not the same as automatic obedience. The AKC recommends patient, consistent training, early socialization, leash work and recall practice. It also cautions that house-training can be challenging.

Use short sessions, immediate rewards and one consistent set of household rules. A tiny dog still needs to learn where to eliminate, how to walk without pulling, how to come when called and how to accept handling. Practice recall first in a secure room, then behind a barrier or on a long line before trying it in an unfenced outdoor area. Never test a young or unreliable dog’s recall near traffic, open gates or unfamiliar animals.
4. The fluffy coat is a recurring commitment
The Pomeranian’s profuse double coat does not maintain itself. The AKC advises brushing through to the skin once a week, using a pin brush and slicker brush, to help prevent mats. Brushing only the visible top layer can leave tangles hidden close to the body, where they pull at the skin and make later grooming painful.

Owners who are not comfortable doing the complete job at home should plan a professional full groom every four to six weeks, according to the AKC. That service includes bathing, brushing, ear care, nail trimming and anal-gland attention. The schedule may need adjustment for coat condition, lifestyle and the individual dog, but skipping routine care allows small tangles to become a major welfare problem.
5. Grooming includes teeth, nails and handling practice
The outline of a freshly brushed Pom can hide the less glamorous parts of care. The AKC recommends keeping nails short and suggests brushing the teeth during the weekly grooming session. Regular checks of ears, paws, skin and mouth also help an owner notice changes early, although they do not replace veterinary examinations.
Make handling a trained behavior. Touch one paw, lift an ear flap or briefly inspect the mouth, then reward cooperation. Increase duration gradually. This preparation makes nail trims, tooth brushing and professional appointments less stressful. If a dog suddenly resists a body area that was previously comfortable, stop and have a veterinarian check for pain instead of forcing the procedure.

6. Small does not mean exercise-free
The AKC says Pomeranians benefit from exercise and enjoy running, play and walks. Indoor games and short walks can suit them, particularly when weather, age or health limits outdoor time. A toy-size body does not eliminate the need for movement, exploration and mental work.
Build activity around the individual dog’s age, conditioning and veterinary advice. Several brief sessions may be more practical than one long outing. Food puzzles, trick training and scent games can add mental exercise without requiring a large yard. Watch for overheating, exhaustion or reluctance to move, and stop when the dog shows distress. Exercise should support fitness and good behavior, not become a contest to cover a fixed distance.
7. A Pom can be an escape artist
The AKC warns that Pomeranians may get through small fence gaps or climb short fencing. Their size lets them exploit openings that would not matter for a larger breed, while their curiosity can draw them toward smells, people or moving animals beyond the boundary.
Inspect gates, latches and the lower edge of every fence. Check whether a determined dog can squeeze under, between or through bars, and do not rely on a short decorative barrier as the sole restraint. Keep identification current and use a leash or secure harness outside an enclosed area. Supervision matters even in a familiar yard: an owner who is nearby can close a gate or interrupt climbing before a small escape becomes a lost-dog emergency.
8. Ordinary outdoor encounters can be physically dangerous
AKC guidance highlights two size-related risks: a larger uncontrolled dog can seriously injure a Pomeranian, and hawks or owls may mistake a very small dog for prey. This is a reason for practical supervision, not a reason to keep a healthy dog indoors permanently.

Stay with the dog outdoors, especially in open areas or where unfamiliar dogs are present. Use a secure barrier, keep distance from off-leash animals and provide cover when the dog is outside in regions where predatory birds are a realistic concern. A Pom’s bold attitude cannot protect it from a large animal’s weight or a predator’s reach, so the owner must control the environment.
9. A family dog still needs careful handling around children
The AKC says Pomeranians tend to be a better fit for families with older children who understand that a small dog is not a toy. Young children should never be left unsupervised with one. A fall, squeeze, chase or attempt to take food can injure a small dog or provoke defensive behavior even when the dog is generally friendly.
Teach children to let the dog approach, avoid lifting it without an adult’s help and leave it alone while eating or sleeping. Pomeranians may get along with other animals, particularly with early socialization, but introductions should be controlled and gradual. Compatibility is an individual outcome, not a guarantee supplied by the breed label.

Luxating patellas—kneecaps that slip out of position—are a known concern in Pomeranians. The American Pomeranian Club calls luxating patellas the breed’s most common problem and recommends patella, heart and eye testing. The AKC also lists patellar screening among conditions responsible breeders address.

A skipping step or an unusual gait should not be used to diagnose a dog at home. Arrange a veterinary examination if you notice intermittent lameness, reluctance to jump or pain. When choosing a puppy, ask the breeder which recommended health examinations were completed and what documentation is available. Screening lowers uncertainty; it cannot guarantee that an individual dog will never develop a condition.

11. A cough or other change needs veterinary guidance
AKC breed guidance includes collapsing tracheas, heart disease, seizures, hypothyroidism and alopecia X among conditions breeders may screen for. These are health considerations, not a diagnosis based on breed or a single symptom. Persistent coughing, breathing difficulty, fainting, seizures, marked hair loss or a sudden change in energy warrants prompt veterinary advice.
PetMD explains that tracheal collapse can cause coughing and advises a harness rather than a collar for a dog diagnosed with that condition, because pressure on the neck can worsen coughing. That recommendation is conditional: a harness is not automatically required for every Pomeranian, and equipment does not treat the underlying disease. Follow the veterinarian’s plan for diagnosis, medication, activity and monitoring. More general breed-care information is available from PetMD’s Pomeranian Dog Breed Health and Care.

Before committing to a Pomeranian, assess the practical workload rather than relying on size alone. The following questions turn breed descriptions into a realistic fit check:
- Coat maintenance: Can you brush to the skin every week and arrange a complete groom every four to six weeks if you will not do it yourself?
- Noise tolerance: Can you train alert barking and manage triggers without expecting the dog to become silent?
- Training time: Can you practice house-training, leash skills, recall and calm handling consistently?
- Outdoor control: Do you have secure fencing and the ability to supervise around larger dogs and wildlife?
- Family routines: Can adults supervise interactions with young children and introduce other animals gradually?
- Health planning: Will you budget for veterinary examinations and discuss patella, heart, eye and other breed-relevant screening?
If the answer to several questions is no, the mismatch is likely to come from care expectations rather than the dog’s size. If the answer is yes, a Pomeranian’s energy, trainability and companionship can be rewarding—provided the individual dog is treated as a small, active animal with real safety and health needs.
Questions to discuss with a breeder or veterinarian
- Which health examinations have the puppy’s parents received, and can you see the results?
- What socialization has the puppy experienced with people, handling, household sounds and other animals?
- What feeding, vaccination, parasite-prevention and house-training routine is currently in place?
- Which brush, bathing and nail-care methods does the breeder or groomer recommend for this coat?
- What signs would justify an urgent call to the veterinarian after bringing the dog home?
Breed guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for an examination or an assessment of the particular dog in front of you. Use it to prepare, then let your veterinarian and qualified training professionals tailor care to the Pomeranian’s age, behavior and medical history.
