Red wolves are opportunistic predators whose food changes with whatever prey is available. Their usual menu combines white-tailed deer, raccoons and smaller mammals such as rabbits, rodents and nutria. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service information says an adult red wolf may eat about two to five pounds of food per day and may travel up to 20 miles or more while looking for prey.

What is a red wolf’s natural diet?

Red wolves (Canis rufus) do not follow a fixed menu. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service species page describes them as opportunistic feeders: the prey they take depends on what is available in the area they are using. The agency’s 2023 Revised Recovery Plan for Red Wolf gives the same broad picture.

Three prey groupings appear consistently in the agency descriptions:

  • White-tailed deer: an important source of food and the largest routinely named prey in the available descriptions.
  • Raccoons: a major part of the diet in places where they are available.
  • Smaller mammals: rabbits, rodents and nutria are specifically named examples.

Those categories describe a typical pattern, not a rule that every individual eats the same animals in the same proportions. A red wolf’s diet can shift as prey numbers, habitat and local conditions change.

How much do red wolves eat?

The Fish & Wildlife Service reports that red wolves consume approximately two to five pounds of food per day. This is an agency figure from its species information, not a guarantee for every wolf on every day. The amount represented by a particular meal will depend on the prey captured and how much of that prey is available to eat.

Do not interpret the daily figure as a feeding schedule. Wild predators obtain food when a hunt succeeds, and the size of a deer, raccoon or small mammal differs substantially. The useful takeaway is the scale: a red wolf needs a regular supply of animal prey, rather than a single standardized food item.

Which prey matters most?

White-tailed deer

Deer are usually an important part of the red wolf diet. They provide a comparatively large food source, so even a diet that also includes many smaller animals can contain a substantial deer component. “Important” does not mean that deer make up the same share everywhere; the agency explicitly cautions that exact diet varies with available prey.

Raccoons

Raccoons are another recurring prey item in the official descriptions. Their presence in the diet illustrates why red wolves are not specialists that depend on one species. Where raccoons are common, they can fill a significant role alongside deer and smaller mammals.

Rabbits, rodents and nutria

Rabbits, rodents and nutria are the named smaller-mammal examples. These animals can supplement larger prey and help red wolves continue foraging when deer or raccoons are less available. The sources do not establish a complete list of every species a red wolf might eat, so these examples should not be treated as an exhaustive catalog.

What does a local diet estimate show?

An FAQ from the Fish & Wildlife Service summarizes an estimate based on approximately 2,200 scats collected in northeastern North Carolina. It reports the following composition:

Prey category Estimated share in that scat sample How to interpret it
White-tailed deer About 50% The largest category in this local estimate.
Raccoons About 30% A substantial secondary component in the sample.
Small mammals, including rabbits, rodents and nutria About 20% A combined category rather than a percentage for each species.

These percentages apply to that agency-reported sample from northeastern North Carolina. The available FAQ material does not establish the underlying study’s publication year or original citation, and the figures should not be presented as a universal or current formula for every red wolf population. Scat analysis also describes what appeared in that sample; it does not mean that every wolf consumed exactly those proportions.

Why does the diet change?

Prey availability is the central reason. When one prey type is abundant or easier to locate, it can occupy more of a wolf’s diet. When it is scarce, red wolves can switch among the prey groups identified by the agency. This flexibility is the practical meaning of “opportunistic feeder.”

Habitat affects the choices indirectly by determining which prey animals can live in an area and how accessible they are. A landscape that supports deer, raccoons and small mammals offers a broader set of options than one with fewer suitable prey. The sources do not provide a season-by-season menu or a fixed ranking for every location, so claims that a particular prey always dominates should be avoided.

How do red wolves find food?

Finding enough prey can require extensive movement. The Fish & Wildlife Service says red wolves may travel up to 20 miles a day or more in search of food. That distance is a reported upper range, not a daily requirement for every animal. A wolf in an area with readily available prey may not need to travel as far as one searching a less productive landscape.

The movement figure also helps explain why prey habitat matters. Food is not merely a point on a map; red wolves may need to cover a large area to encounter suitable animals. Their foraging decisions therefore reflect both what prey exists and where it can be found.

Do red wolves hunt alone or in packs?

The Fish & Wildlife Service FAQ says most hunting is believed to occur individually or in pairs, while group hunting is probably less frequent. Those qualifications matter: the statement is an agency summary of the available understanding, not a claim that every hunt follows one pattern.

Individual or paired hunting fits a diet built around medium-sized and smaller prey. A single wolf or two wolves can search for and pursue the kinds of animals named in the diet descriptions without assuming the highly coordinated group behavior sometimes associated with larger prey specialists. The evidence supplied for red wolves does not justify importing conclusions about gray wolf hunting and applying them automatically to this species.

What “opportunistic” means during a hunt

Opportunistic hunting does not mean random feeding. It means that red wolves can use more than one prey option and adjust to local availability. A wolf may encounter a deer, raccoon or smaller mammal and take advantage of the opportunity that best fits the circumstances. The official sources do not provide a single step-by-step chase sequence, success rate or universal hunting technique, so those details should not be invented.

How prey size shapes hunting

The documented prey mix ranges from deer to rabbits and rodents. That spread means a red wolf’s hunting challenge can vary considerably from one encounter to the next. Deer represent a larger food opportunity; raccoons and small mammals represent other options that may be encountered in the same general landscape.

Because the source material supports medium-sized and smaller prey, it is more accurate to describe red wolf hunting in terms of flexible, usually individual or paired pursuit than to portray every hunt as a large-pack operation. Group hunting can occur, but the agency FAQ characterizes it as probably less frequent.

Does a red wolf eat only meat?

The natural foods identified by the Fish & Wildlife Service are animal prey: deer, raccoons, rabbits, rodents and nutria. The supplied agency descriptions do not present a plant-based component or a domesticated-food diet. For a wildlife article, the defensible answer is therefore that red wolves obtain their food through prey, with the exact mix changing according to availability.

This does not support offering food to a wild wolf. A wild animal’s ability to forage is part of its ecology, and human feeding can create unsafe encounters for people and wildlife.

Why prey habitat is part of red wolf conservation

Protecting red wolves requires attention to the animals they eat. The Fish & Wildlife Service’s Red Wolf Recovery Program includes the Prey for the Pack initiative, which supports habitat improvements on private lands intended to benefit prey species.

The initiative reflects a straightforward ecological connection: improving conditions for prey can improve the food landscape available to red wolves. It is a conservation program, not a recommendation that the public purchase feed or attempt to provision wolves. The available program description does not establish a retail product, affiliate opportunity or universal habitat prescription for every property.

Common misunderstandings about red wolf food

“Red wolves always eat deer.”

Deer are usually important, but the agency describes a mixed diet that also includes raccoons and smaller mammals. The local scat estimate is evidence of variation within one region, not proof that deer comprise the same share everywhere.

“The 50-30-20 split is the red wolf diet.”

That split comes from approximately 2,200 scats in northeastern North Carolina. It is a local estimate with an unspecified underlying study date in the available material, not a species-wide dietary formula.

“Red wolves always hunt as a pack.”

The agency FAQ says individual and paired hunting is believed to be more common, with group hunting probably less frequent. The wording leaves room for variation rather than assigning one behavior to every hunt.

“A wolf that travels 20 miles must do so every day.”

The reported figure is “up to 20 miles a day or more” while searching for food. It describes a possible upper range, not a fixed mileage target.

What should people do if they encounter a red wolf?

Do not feed, bait or approach a wild red wolf. Observe wildlife from a safe distance and allow the animal to continue moving and foraging. Feeding is not a substitute for the prey habitat that conservation programs seek to protect, and close contact can put both people and the animal at risk. The natural-diet evidence concerns wild prey use; it is not guidance for keeping, feeding or handling red wolves.
