Why Is My Dog Shedding So Much? Causes and When to Call a Vet

Seasonal and year-round shedding can be normal, but bald patches, thinning, itch or irritated skin call for a veterinary evaluation. Learn how coat type changes shedding, which conditions can cause hair loss and how to groom safely.

Dogs shed as part of normal coat renewal, but the amount varies widely by breed, coat type and season. A thick double coat may release large amounts of undercoat, and some dogs shed year-round. Indoor lighting and temperature can also blur seasonal patterns.

The important distinction is between loose hair from an otherwise healthy coat and true hair loss. Bald patches, thinning fur, persistent itching, red or inflamed skin, scabs, scaling, grease, dandruff or an unusual odor are not explained by ordinary shedding alone. Sudden or clearly unusual hair loss warrants a veterinary appointment.

What normal dog shedding looks like

Hair grows, rests and falls out in cycles. Shedding removes older hairs so a new coat can grow. Every dog sheds, although owners see very different amounts because coat structure controls how loose hair is released and retained.

Breed and coat type set the baseline

Dogs with dense or double coats have a soft insulating undercoat beneath longer guard hairs. When undercoat is released, the volume can seem dramatic even when the skin is healthy. Some double-coated dogs shed continuously, while others release much more undercoat during seasonal transitions. Dogs with single, curly or wiry coats may shed less visibly because loose hairs remain caught in the coat until brushing or clipping.

Seasonal changes are common, not universal

Spring and fall are typical heavy-shedding periods for dogs whose coats respond to seasonal daylight and temperature. The exact timing depends on the individual dog and local conditions. Dogs living mainly indoors may shed smaller amounts throughout the year because artificial light and stable indoor temperatures reduce the contrast between seasons. A year-round pattern can therefore be normal if it is consistent for that dog and the skin remains healthy.

There is no reliable “normal amount” in handfuls

No single number of hairs, brush loads or days applies to every breed and coat. The most useful comparison is your dog’s established pattern: how much hair appears on bedding, clothing and floors, how quickly the coat regrows, and whether the skin looks comfortable. A marked change from that baseline matters more than the size of one pile of fur.

Shedding versus hair loss: the distinction that matters

Feature More consistent with routine shedding More concerning for a medical problem
Coat appearance Even coverage with loose hairs coming out during normal brushing Thinning areas, sharply defined bald patches or failure of hair to regrow
Skin Normal color and texture for the dog Redness, darkening, thickening, sores, scabs, scaling or other lesions
Behavior No unusual scratching, licking or chewing Persistent itch, rubbing, licking or chewing that damages the coat
Coat condition Usual texture and odor for that dog Recurring dandruff, greasiness, an unusual odor or repeated deterioration after bathing
Onset Gradual or seasonal and similar to previous years Sudden, markedly increased or progressively worsening loss

Brushing can reveal loose fur that was already ready to fall out; it does not create a diagnosis. If the coat is actually thinning or the skin is irritated, treating the problem as a grooming issue can delay appropriate care.

Why a dog may shed unusually or develop bald areas

Several disorders produce similar-looking coat changes. Hair on the floor cannot identify the cause, so the possibilities below are clues for a veterinary assessment rather than a home diagnosis.

Allergy and itch–scratch cycles

Environmental or other allergies can make a dog itch. Scratching, licking and chewing break hairs, remove the surface of the skin and create thin or bare areas. Atopic dermatitis commonly causes itchiness; affected skin may become red, darker, thicker or secondarily infected. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that canine atopic dermatitis may affect approximately 10–15% of the dog population; that estimate applies to atopic dermatitis, not to excessive shedding in general.

Fleas, mites and other parasites

Flea allergy can produce intense itch and hair loss, sometimes concentrated around the rear of the body. Mange mites and other parasites can also inflame skin and trigger self-trauma. Some infestations are not obvious from a quick look at the coat and require an examination or testing. Do not assume that the absence of visible fleas rules out a parasite-related problem.

Bacterial or fungal infection

Infections and other inflammatory skin conditions can alter both the skin and the hair cycle. Scaling, crusts, lesions, odor, greasy areas or broken hairs may accompany the loss. Different infections require different tests and treatments, and a product that helps one condition can aggravate another.

Hormonal and metabolic disease

Endocrine disorders, including hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease, are associated with coat thinning or hair loss. These problems may not itch at first, so a dog can lose hair without the dramatic scratching seen with allergies or parasites. A veterinarian may need the dog’s history, physical examination and laboratory testing to investigate them.

Diet, stress and other illness

An inadequate or poorly balanced diet, chronic stress, digestive problems and other illnesses can affect hair quality and the normal growth cycle. Coat changes may appear after a broader health problem has begun. Adding oils, vitamins or other supplements without guidance is not a dependable solution and can create nutritional imbalances or obscure the underlying issue.

When to call a veterinarian

Arrange a veterinary evaluation when hair loss is sudden, clearly greater than your dog’s usual shedding or accompanied by skin or behavior changes. Contact the clinic particularly if you notice:

  • Bald spots, visible thinning or areas where hair is not returning.
  • Persistent scratching, licking, rubbing or chewing.
  • Red, inflamed, darkened or thickened skin.
  • Scabs, sores, scaling or other lesions.
  • Recurring dandruff, a greasy coat or an unusual odor.
  • A coat problem that returns soon after grooming or bathing.

These signs do not identify one specific disease, but they make routine seasonal shedding an incomplete explanation. Call sooner rather than repeatedly changing shampoos or grooming tools when the skin is being damaged.

What the veterinarian may do

  1. Take a history. Be ready to describe when the change began, whether it follows a seasonal pattern, where the hair is missing, how often the dog itches, recent grooming or bathing, diet, and parasite-prevention history.
  2. Examine the coat and skin. The distribution of loss, broken versus shed hairs, skin color, scale, odor and lesions can narrow the possibilities.
  3. Test when indicated. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may recommend skin scrapings or other tests to look for parasites, infection or another cause.
  4. Match treatment to the result. The appropriate medication, parasite control, therapeutic shampoo, diet adjustment or additional testing depends on the diagnosis. There is no universal treatment for unexplained shedding.

Bring photographs of the coat from before the change and note any pattern you have observed. Do not start a human medication, prescription treatment, new flea product or restrictive diet unless the veterinarian advises it for your dog.

Safe grooming for ordinary loose hair

When the dog is comfortable and the skin looks normal, grooming can collect loose fur before it reaches furniture and floors. It does not treat allergies, parasites, infection or hormonal disease.

Choose a tool for the coat

Coat situation Useful approach Important limitation
Loose surface hair A soft or slicker-style brush used gently in the direction of hair growth Stop if the skin becomes pink or the dog reacts painfully
Dense undercoat A coat rake or de-shedding tool designed for undercoat removal Use only as directed; repeated forceful passes can irritate skin or break healthy hairs
Tangles or mats Work slowly with a suitable comb or ask a professional groomer for help Do not yank mats, which can tear skin and cause pain

A gentle brushing routine

  1. Check the skin first. If you see redness, sores, bald patches, heavy scale or obvious pain, pause grooming and contact a veterinarian.
  2. Use short, light strokes suited to the coat rather than pressing the tool into the skin.
  3. Work in small sections and stop when the dog becomes uncomfortable.
  4. Remove collected hair from the brush between passes so you can see the coat and avoid pulling.
  5. Clean the tool and store it dry. Ask a groomer or veterinarian to demonstrate the correct technique if you are unsure which tool fits the coat.

More aggressive brushing is not better. A de-shedding product can remove loose undercoat, but it cannot explain why a dog is losing hair and should never substitute for an examination when abnormal signs are present.

How to monitor shedding without guessing

Record the date you first noticed a change and photograph the same body areas every few days in similar lighting. Note itching, licking, odor, dandruff, bathing, grooming and any new food or environmental change. This record helps distinguish a brief seasonal increase from progressive loss and gives the veterinarian a clearer timeline.

Inspect the coat by parting the hair rather than judging only what is on the floor. Healthy-looking, evenly covered skin with a familiar shedding pattern supports routine grooming. Uneven coverage, lesions or escalating self-trauma shifts the priority to veterinary evaluation.

Common mistakes that delay an answer

  • Using a universal shedding threshold: breed, coat type and season make a fixed cupful or brush-load rule unreliable.
  • Assuming all hair on the floor is normal: look for thinning, baldness and skin changes as well as loose fur.
  • Changing several products at once: multiple shampoos, supplements or parasite products make it harder to identify what helped or caused irritation.
  • Pulling through mats: force can injure skin and worsen the apparent hair loss.
  • Treating a symptom without finding the cause: itch, infection, parasites, endocrine disease and nutritional problems need different approaches.
