What Should Dogs Eat? A Guide to Complete and Balanced Dog Nutrition

Choose a food labeled complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then tailor portions to the individual dog and limit treats and extras.

For most healthy dogs, choose a food labeled complete and balanced for the dog’s life stage, feed an amount suited to that individual dog, and keep treats and other extras to no more than 10% of daily intake. Puppies need a growth-appropriate diet until they reach skeletal maturity; dogs with health concerns or unexplained weight changes need an individualized plan from a veterinarian.

What does “complete and balanced” mean?

A complete-and-balanced food is intended to provide the nutrients a dog needs, in appropriate ratios, when fed as the sole diet for the life stage named on the label. The nutritional adequacy statement is the key label detail to check; ingredient or marketing claims alone do not establish that a food is suitable as a staple diet.

On a commercial food, look for a statement that it is formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profile for the relevant life stage, or that animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate complete and balanced nutrition for that stage. AAFCO is the standards source named in the statement, not a product-certifying organization. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 nutrition and weight-management guidance explains the role of the statement.

Foods labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding are not represented as complete and balanced for long-term feeding as the sole diet. Use them in a limited role or under veterinary direction, rather than as a dog’s everyday staple.

How to choose a staple food

  1. Read the adequacy statement. Confirm that it says complete and balanced for the dog’s intended life stage and note whether adequacy is based on nutrient-profile formulation or feeding tests.
  2. Match the life stage. Choose a growth diet for a puppy and an adult-maintenance diet for an adult, unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise. For a puppy, consider expected adult size as well as age.
  3. Compare calorie information and portions. Food labels provide feeding recommendations, but those recommendations are not standardized by AAFCO and do not determine the right amount for every dog. Use them as a starting guide and adjust based on the dog’s needs and condition.
  4. Consider the manufacturer’s nutrition expertise. The WSAVA food-selection resource suggests asking who formulates the diet, whether the company can provide nutrient information, and whether it offers accessible contact details.
  5. Check the product’s intended role. Make sure the food is a complete diet if it will be the staple, rather than a treat or supplemental product.

These checks help compare foods on nutrition and suitability; they do not establish that one brand is best. Ingredient-list headlines are less useful for this decision than adequacy, life-stage fit, calorie information, and the manufacturer’s ability to answer nutrition questions.

What should puppies eat, and when should they switch?

Puppies need food formulated for growth until skeletal maturity. Small and medium dogs commonly reach that point at about one year, while some large- and giant-breed dogs may take around 15–16 months. These are general guideposts, not fixed switch dates; growth varies by dog. Ask the veterinarian when to transition.

Large-breed puppy growth deserves particular care, including avoiding excessive calcium intake. Do not add supplements or switch to an adult food based on a generic age rule without considering the puppy’s size, growth, and veterinary advice.

Do older dogs need senior food?

Not automatically. AAHA notes that AAFCO does not set specific nutrient requirements for mature, senior, or geriatric pets. A dog doing well on a complete-and-balanced adult-maintenance food may be able to continue eating it; a medical condition or individualized assessment may point to a different diet.

Life-stage labels are useful, but age alone does not determine nutritional needs. Size, breed, lifestyle, and health status also matter across the life stages of puppy, young adult, mature adult, senior, and end of life.

How much should you feed your dog?

There is no universal daily portion for an unspecified dog. Start with the package recommendation as a guide, then account for the dog’s calorie intake, life stage, activity, weight, body-condition score, and muscle-condition score. Reassess regularly rather than assuming the same amount will remain appropriate as the dog’s needs change.

Measure meals and keep a feeding record if you are trying to follow a plan or understand a weight change. Food-dispensing toys and automatic feeders can help manage access and portions, but they do not replace choosing an appropriate diet or veterinary guidance when a dog’s needs are unclear.

How many treats and table foods can a dog have?

AAHA’s feeding-plan guidance recommends that the main complete-and-balanced diet supply at least 90% of total intake, with treats and other foods making up no more than 10%. This is a proportion recommendation, not a calorie target for an individual dog. Count table foods, treats, and other extras as part of the dog’s overall intake; they may be nutritionally incomplete, and treats and supplements generally do not carry a nutritional adequacy statement.

When should you ask a veterinarian?

Generic guidance cannot determine an exact food, calorie target, or portion without knowing a dog’s age, size, activity, body condition, reproductive status, and health history. Seek an individualized veterinary assessment for a diagnosed disease, poor appetite, recurring digestive or skin signs, unexplained weight change, pregnancy or lactation, or a need for a special diet. If an abnormality arises, ask for advice before changing food types.

AAHA recommends nutritional assessment throughout life as part of health care. Its 2021 guidelines describe nutritional management as central to a complete healthcare plan and relevant to a pet’s longevity and quality of life.
