For an adult cat, start with a quiet, secure indoor room, separate food and water bowls, the food your foster program recommends, a litter box and approved litter, bedding, a secure carrier, and safe enrichment such as a scratcher and toys. Kittens may need different litter and feeding supplies, plus a safe source of warmth. Before shopping, ask the shelter or rescue what it provides and follow its care instructions.
Supplies for fostering an adult cat
Set up a small, quiet room—such as a spare room or bathroom—where the cat can settle and you can monitor eating, drinking, and litter habits. Keep the cat indoors and separate from household animals during the initial adjustment, following the foster program’s directions.
- Food and water bowls: Use separate bowls and feed the food specified by the foster coordinator.
- Litter box and litter: Choose a box that fits the cat and use the litter approved by the program. Best Friends’ adult-cat manual recommends an uncovered box and clumping litter unless the program instructs otherwise.
- Bedding: Towels or blankets provide a soft resting place.
- Enrichment: A scratching post or tray, durable toys, and treats can support comfort and positive interaction. Avoid toys with pieces the cat could swallow.
- Secure carrier: Use a carrier for appointments and other transport; do not plan to carry the cat loose.
- Cleaning and grooming basics: Keep the litter and sleeping areas clean. Grooming supplies depend on the cat and the coordinator’s guidance.
- Identification: Follow the rescue’s identification protocol. Best Friends recommends an ID collar.
Extra supplies for kittens
Kittens need an age-appropriate setup, not simply smaller versions of adult-cat supplies. Best Friends’ kitten foster guide lists kitten food, a low-sided litter box, non-clumping litter, bedding, a secure sleeping area, easy-to-clean toys, and a scratching post. Confirm the specific setup with the rescue or a veterinarian because needs depend on the kittens’ age and condition.
For bottle-fed kittens
A bottle-fed litter needs kitten formula and a new feeding bottle. Very young kittens also need a safe warming plan because they cannot reliably regulate their body temperature. Ask the foster coordinator or veterinarian how to provide warmth safely and what feeding and care schedule is appropriate.

Check with the foster program before buying supplies
Some programs provide some or all of the equipment and supplies. Best Friends’ Utah adult-cat manual says its program provides needed supplies, and its kitten guidance also describes program support. That does not establish what another shelter or rescue will provide: ask your coordinator which items are supplied and which food, litter, or other products you should use. Recommendations from one organization are not universal requirements.
If you have just found the cat or kittens
“Stray” can mean a lost pet, a community cat, or an animal that needs rescue, so do not assume every cat found outdoors should immediately be brought into your home. Check for an ID tag and ask a shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic to scan for a microchip. Local rules for reporting found animals may also apply.

If you find kittens, their mother may be nearby. The ASPCA advises assessing their condition and seeking guidance from a local shelter or rescue before deciding what to do. That local support can also help determine whether fostering is appropriate and what supplies or care plan the kittens need.
