A school cat needs more than a bowl and a bed: plan for toileting, nutrition, water, sleep, hiding, scratching, transport, enrichment and cleaning. Before buying anything, confirm that keeping a cat at school is permitted and suitable. The NSW Department of Education says, “In general, cats are not considered suitable animals for housing at school.” That is NSW guidance, not a universal law, so check your school, council and animal-welfare requirements first. If a cat is allowed, one named adult must own the care plan, including veterinary care and coverage during weekends, holidays and emergencies.
Start with suitability, permission and adult responsibility
Supplies cannot make an unsuitable classroom arrangement safe. The NSW Department of Education’s cats guidance is specific to New South Wales and generally advises against housing cats at school. Where a cat does visit, that guidance limits activity to observation, discussion and limited, well-supervised handling. Other jurisdictions and individual schools may set different rules, so obtain written approval from the relevant school leadership and check local animal, health, allergy and safeguarding requirements.

A classroom pet also needs a care plan that works when children are absent. Agriculture Victoria says a classroom pet needs competent, consistent care, with arrangements for time alone, veterinary treatment and school breaks. An adult—not a class of children—should be the accountable carer. A holiday or weekend home must provide the same food, water, litter access, resting places, hiding options and safe temperature as the school setting.

| Need | What to provide | Selection and setup points |
|---|---|---|
| Toileting | Indoor litter tray, appropriate litter and a scoop | Use a plastic tray that can be cleaned and disinfected. Provide privacy, ventilation and a location students will not disturb. Match entry height and tray size to the cat. |
| Food | Separate food dish and nutritionally complete food | Feed for the cat’s life stage. Find out what it already eats and change gradually, if necessary. |
| Water | Separate water dish and fresh water | Keep water away from the litter tray and food where practical. Wash the dish routinely and refresh its contents. |
| Rest and security | Washable bedding plus an enclosed or partly enclosed retreat | A three-sided box, open transport basket or similar protected space lets the cat rest away from activity. |
| Scratching | Vertical post, horizontal pad or both | Base the orientation and material on the cat’s established preference. Secure tall posts so they cannot tip. |
| Transport and refuge | Sturdy carrier | Use it for veterinary trips and as an always-available safe place if the cat accepts it. |
| Enrichment | Appropriate toys and opportunities to play, climb or explore safely | Kittens need especially frequent play. Supervise toys and remove damaged or ingestible parts. |
| Hygiene | Pet-safe cleaning products, disposable gloves, waste bags, spare bedding and paper towels | Follow each product label, keep the cat away while cleaning and let disinfected surfaces dry fully before access. |
No source establishes a universal number of trays, bowls, toys or blankets for every school. Buy enough duplicates to keep a clean replacement available and size equipment to the cat and the room.
Set up the litter area correctly
Choose a tray the cat can use comfortably
An indoor cat must always have access to a litter tray. NSW school guidance recommends plastic because it is practical to clean and disinfect. Cornell veterinary guidance notes that many cats prefer simple, uncovered boxes and that most, though not all, prefer unscented, fine-textured litter. Do not replace a cat’s familiar setup solely because a covered or scented product looks tidier.
Use a low entry for a kitten, senior cat or cat with mobility limitations. Make the tray long and wide enough for the cat to turn around without touching the sides. A covered tray can contain litter, but it may reduce ventilation or feel confining; an open tray makes inspection and cleaning easier. The right choice is the one the individual cat reliably uses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlace it in a private, ventilated location
Keep the tray in a quiet area where students cannot crowd, tap or reach for the cat while it toilets. Avoid placing it beside food and water. The area still needs enough ventilation to control odour and moisture. Use a mat outside the tray to catch scattered litter, and keep a scoop and waste container nearby but inaccessible to children.
Clean on a predictable schedule
The NSW Department of Education’s 2026 guidance calls for daily litter changes. In practice, remove faeces and wet litter promptly, replace the litter as directed for the chosen product and wash the tray when soiled. A cat that stops using the tray, strains, produces blood or has a sudden change in urine or stool needs prompt veterinary advice rather than a new litter product.
Provide food and water without creating contamination risks
Food
Use a separate food dish and a nutritionally complete diet appropriate to the cat’s life stage. Ask the owner or veterinarian for the exact food, feeding amount and schedule. Cats can reject an abrupt change, so transition gradually if the school must change diets. Keep food sealed between meals, label it with the cat’s name and feeding instructions and discard food that has spoiled or been contaminated.
Water
Provide a separate water dish with fresh water at all times. Keep it well away from the litter tray and clean it regularly. Some cats prefer a broad, shallow dish that does not press against their whiskers; use the cat’s observed preference rather than assuming one design suits every animal.
Dish hygiene
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises cleaning bowls after every wet-food use and daily for dry food and water. Keep spare dishes so feeding can continue while a used dish is being washed and dried. Do not let students share utensils with the cat or handle food without adult supervision and handwashing.

Create a genuine resting and hiding area
A classroom is full of voices, movement and sudden interruptions. The cat needs a retreat that students cannot open, block or enter. NSW guidance identifies a box enclosed on three sides or an open transport basket as workable options, with washable blankets or towels for bedding.
- Place the bed or retreat away from doors, loud equipment, heating outlets and busy walkways.
- Keep at least one side protected so the cat can watch the room without being surrounded.
- Wash bedding regularly and keep a dry replacement available.
- Never pull a hiding cat out for a lesson, photograph or handling activity.
Feline environmental-needs guidance from the American Association of Feline Practitioners describes cardboard boxes as possible safe-place options. Offer one only if it is clean, stable, free of staples or loose string and easy to remove for inspection.
Choose a scratching resource that matches the cat
Scratching is normal maintenance and communication, not misbehaviour. Cornell veterinary guidance notes that cats differ in preferred orientation and material. A cat that scratches carpet may prefer a horizontal pad; one that stretches against furniture may prefer a tall, stable post. Sisal, cardboard, carpet and other surfaces can appeal differently to different cats, so begin with the material the cat already uses.
Anchor a vertical post so it cannot topple when the cat reaches its full length. Put the scratcher near the sleeping area or another place the cat already scratches, not hidden across the room. Replace frayed, unstable or ingestible components. Do not punish scratching; redirect the cat to the approved surface and protect school furniture during the transition.
Use the carrier as transport equipment and a safe option
A secure carrier is essential for veterinary visits, evacuation and travel between the school and an approved break-time home. Select one large enough for the cat to stand, turn and lie down, with secure fasteners and good ventilation. Introduce it before an emergency by leaving it open with familiar bedding inside.
A carrier can remain available as a refuge if the cat finds it comfortable. Feline environmental guidance also identifies boxes as safe-place options, but every retreat must remain stable, clean and free from student interference. Never carry an unrestrained cat through a busy school corridor or rely on a child to hold it.
Plan play and enrichment for a classroom setting
Provide exercise and enrichment suited to the cat’s age, health and temperament. Kittens need especially frequent play, but an adult cat may prefer short, predictable sessions and elevated observation. Use toys that cannot be swallowed, splintered or wrapped around a neck, and inspect them before each session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Schedule short, adult-supervised play periods rather than constant handling.
- Rotate intact toys to maintain interest without leaving a cluttered floor.
- Keep wand toys, strings, ribbons and small parts secured when no adult is present.
- Give the cat a route to its retreat so enrichment never becomes forced interaction.
- Stop when the cat shows fear, agitation, flattened ears, hissing, hiding or attempts to escape.
Enrichment does not mean allowing unrestricted roaming. Doors and windows need an escape-prevention check, and the cat should be separated from other animals unless a veterinarian and the responsible adult have established a safe introduction plan.

Build cleaning into the supply plan
Cleaning is not an occasional deep-clean after an accident. The CDC’s 2026 guidance gives item-specific frequencies:
| Item | CDC frequency or direction | Practical school procedure |
|---|---|---|
| Food bowls | After every wet-food use; daily for dry food | Wash, rinse and dry before the next meal; keep a spare bowl. |
| Water bowls | Daily | Empty, wash, rinse, dry and refill with fresh water. |
| Beds and blankets | Weekly | Use washable fabrics and keep a clean replacement while laundering. |
| Toys | Monthly | Clean more often when visibly soiled and discard damaged items. |
| Items contacting urine or faeces, including the litter box | Disinfect as often as a toilet or bathroom | Follow the disinfectant label and the cat’s litter-care routine; do not mix products. |
Keep the cat out of the area during cleaning. Follow the product label for dilution, contact time, ventilation and storage, and allow surfaces to dry completely before returning the cat. Store chemicals, waste bags and scoops in a locked or adult-only cupboard. Wash hands after handling litter, faeces, vomit, food dishes or bedding, and teach students to wash after any approved contact.
Arrange the room around the cat’s needs
Think in zones rather than placing every item together:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Toileting zone: private, ventilated and away from food, water and high traffic.
- Feeding zone: cleanable floor, labelled food storage and separate dishes.
- Rest zone: quiet retreat with washable bedding and no forced access.
- Activity zone: scratcher and safe toys with enough clearance to play.
- Care-storage zone: carrier, spare bedding, cleaning supplies and records, restricted to adults.
Check the layout at the cat’s eye level. Look for dangling cords, toxic plants, open bins, narrow gaps, hot surfaces, unsecured windows and doors that can be left ajar. A supply is not useful if the cat cannot reach it without crossing a student queue or being cornered.
Compare options by function, not by marketing
When two products appear similar, use these criteria:
| Decision | Questions to ask | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Open versus covered litter tray | Will the cat use it? Can adults inspect and disinfect it easily? Is ventilation adequate? | Covered designs may contain litter and odour but can restrict visibility and airflow; open designs are easier to monitor but expose more litter. |
| Tray entry height | Can the cat step over it comfortably? | Low entry helps kittens and cats with mobility limits but may allow more litter scatter. |
| Vertical versus horizontal scratcher | Which orientation and material does this cat already choose? | A tall post supports a full stretch; a pad may suit a floor-scratcher and is often easier to store. |
| Washable bedding | Can it be removed quickly, washed and dried completely? | Thicker beds may be comfortable but take longer to dry and require a spare. |
| Carrier design | Is it escape-resistant, ventilated and easy for an adult to clean and carry? | More opening points can simplify loading but must latch securely. |
| Toy selection | Can parts be swallowed, shed or wrapped around the cat? | Interactive toys offer exercise but require direct supervision and secure storage. |
Do not infer safety, durability or performance from a product photograph. Inspect construction, read cleaning instructions and test the setup under adult supervision before students are present.
Daily, weekly and break-time checklists
Every school day
- Confirm the cat is alert, breathing normally, eating and drinking according to its plan.
- Refresh water and follow the feeding schedule.
- Inspect and clean the litter tray; follow the required daily change routine.
- Check that the retreat, bedding, scratcher and toys are secure and usable.
- Remove faeces, spills and damaged toys promptly.
- Record appetite, elimination, medication and unusual behaviour.
- Keep student interaction within the approved, supervised rules.
Each week
- Launder beds and blankets, replacing them with clean, dry items.
- Inspect the carrier, latches, screens, scratcher stability and room escape points.
- Review food and litter stock, expiry dates and cleaning-product supplies.
- Check that care records and emergency contacts are current.
Before weekends, holidays or an overnight stay
- Confirm the named adult who will take responsibility and the exact handover time.
- Send the cat with familiar food, litter, dishes, bedding, carrier and written instructions.
- Verify that the destination provides a quiet retreat, secure doors and windows, and the same toileting and feeding access.
- Leave veterinary details, medication directions and permission for emergency treatment.
- Do not leave the cat alone in a closed classroom or assume a student will return to care for it.
Student contact, allergies and incident prevention
Children should not be the primary carers. An adult should open doors, serve food, clean litter, administer medication and decide whether handling is appropriate. Use a visible rule such as “the cat chooses whether to approach,” and stop contact when the cat retreats or shows stress.
Ask families and staff about allergies and asthma before introducing a cat. Establish a no-go area for students, provide handwashing access and keep food, litter tools and medicines away from shared classroom materials. Have a written response for scratches, bites, escapes and suspected illness, including who contacts the family, school leadership and a veterinarian.

Adjust the setup for kittens, adults and cats with health limits
Kittens
Use low-entry toileting equipment, closely supervise play and protect small objects, cords and gaps. Kittens need frequent rest and enrichment, and their feeding, vaccination and social-contact plans should come from the responsible adult and veterinarian.
Adult cats
Preserve familiar food, litter texture, scratcher material and sleeping habits whenever possible. An adult cat that already avoids noise may need a larger protected zone and fewer handling sessions.
Senior cats or cats with mobility limitations
Choose low sides, non-slip flooring and bedding that is easy to reach. Keep food, water, litter and the retreat on one accessible level. A sudden toileting or mobility change warrants veterinary attention.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying supplies before checking permission
Problem: Equipment is purchased for a classroom arrangement that the school or local authority does not allow.
Correction: Obtain approval and clarify jurisdiction-specific rules first. NSW’s general unsuitability statement should not be treated as a worldwide legal rule, but it is a serious suitability warning for NSW schools.
Putting the litter tray beside food
Problem: The cat may avoid either resource, and contamination control becomes harder.
Correction: Separate toileting and feeding zones and keep both easy for adults to inspect.
Using scented litter or changing diets abruptly
Problem: A cat may reject the tray or develop digestive upset after an unnecessary change.

Contact a veterinarian for breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to urinate, blood in urine or stool, collapse, suspected poisoning, significant injury, refusal to eat or drink, or a sudden major behaviour change. Do not use classroom products or home remedies as a substitute for diagnosis. Keep the carrier accessible so an adult can transport the cat safely.
A complete supply kit supports welfare; it does not establish that a classroom is the right home. The final decision should weigh the cat’s temperament and health, the school’s rules, student safety, allergy management, adult availability and a realistic plan for every day the school is closed.
