What to Do If Your Dog Is Exposed to Drugs or Medication

Move your dog away from the medication and call a veterinarian, emergency veterinary clinic, or animal poison-control service immediately—even if your dog looks normal. Go straight to an emergency veterinary hospital for unconsciousness, trouble breathing, bleeding, seizures, or a dog who is not responding. Do not induce vomiting or give food, medicine, or a home antidote unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to.

First, make the situation safe

  1. Stop access. Take the medication away, move your dog to another area, and keep other pets away from the source. If pills were scattered, secure them rather than trying to guess how many are missing.
  2. Look for life-threatening signs. An unconscious dog, a dog struggling to breathe, bleeding, having a seizure, or not responding needs immediate transport to an emergency veterinary hospital. If another person is available, have them call the hospital while you travel.
  3. Get professional advice now. Call your dog’s veterinarian, the nearest emergency clinic, or an animal poison-control service. Do not wait to see whether symptoms appear; some toxic effects are delayed.
  4. Collect the evidence. Take the bottle, package, pill organizer, remaining tablets or liquid, and a clear photograph of the label. Note what may be missing and when the exposure might have occurred.
  5. Avoid home treatment. Do not induce vomiting, administer a medication, give a home antidote, or offer food or other remedies unless the veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so.

These actions are consistent with guidance from the ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline, and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 first-aid brochure.

When an exposure is an emergency

Do not spend time searching for a hotline or waiting for a callback if your dog has a severe sign. Leave for the emergency hospital and call en route when possible. The urgent signs are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Unconsciousness or inability to wake the dog
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Failure to respond normally

A dog can be seriously affected before obvious signs develop. The ASPCA advises not waiting for symptoms to worsen, because some poisons have delayed effects. A dog that appears normal still needs prompt case-specific advice after a suspected medication exposure.

Who to call in the United States

Use the veterinarian who knows your dog, a local emergency veterinary clinic, or one of the national poison-control services below. Confirm contact details and fees on the linked service page because they can change. A life-threatening dog should not wait for a particular hotline.

Service Phone Published availability or fee Link
ASPCA Poison Control (888) 426-4435 Service page states 24/7, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply, but the reviewed page does not state an amount. ASPCA Poison Control
Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 Current page lists 24/7 availability and an $89 per-incident fee (service-page information accessed October 13, 2026; verify before calling). Pet Poison Helpline
Your veterinarian or nearest emergency clinic Use the clinic’s current local number Follow its instructions for transport and arrival. Local clinic website or phone listing

Pet Poison Helpline says it has managed more than 3 million animal poisoning and exposure cases. That is the service’s cumulative figure, not an independent estimate of how common medication exposure is among dogs or a measure of treatment outcomes.

Poison control or an emergency clinic?

Both can be appropriate, but they serve different immediate needs. A poison-control specialist can assess the product, estimated dose, timing, and your dog’s characteristics and can coordinate recommendations with the treating veterinarian. An emergency clinic can examine and stabilize a dog that is already ill. If your dog is unconscious, struggling to breathe, bleeding, seizing, or not responding, the clinic and transport take priority; another person can make the poison-control call while you leave.

When choosing between national services, check current geographic availability, operating hours, consultation fee, follow-up policy, and whether the service coordinates with your veterinarian. Do not delay care while comparing services or waiting for a preferred hotline.

What information to have ready

Accurate details help the professional determine whether your dog needs immediate hospital care, monitoring, or another response. Do not delay the call while trying to establish an exact number; give your best estimate or a range.

  • Quantity: how much may be missing or ingested; state a range if you cannot know

  • Symptoms: what you see and when each sign began
  • Evidence: the original bottle or package, pill organizer, remaining medication, and a label photograph

The helpline’s caller guidance specifically describes the product, amount, time, and pet details that specialists request. A range is useful when the exact quantity is unknown.

A concise call script

Start with the urgent fact: “My dog may have eaten medication and I need to know whether it could be a problem.” Then provide the product name and strength, the largest amount that could be missing, the likely time window, your dog’s weight and age, health conditions, current medicines, and any signs you see. If you are unsure of the amount, say so plainly and give a reasonable range. Pet Poison Helpline uses similar example wording, including a caller asking whether a dog’s medication ingestion “will be a problem.” A clear, complete first statement helps the specialist begin triage without making you wait for perfect information.

Why you cannot judge the risk from the label alone

A medicine that is routinely used by people is not automatically safe for a dog. The risk depends on the actual active ingredient, strength, amount, time since exposure, route of exposure, and the individual dog’s size and health. Existing disease and other medicines can change the assessment. There is no reliable universal “safe amount” or home antidote that applies to every drug and every dog.

For that reason, do not use a human dosing chart, another pet’s prescription, internet advice, or a previous incident as a substitute for professional triage. The Pet Poison Helpline’s medication guidance explains why human medicines can be poisonous to pets and stresses urgent consultation.

What not to do while you wait for instructions

Do not induce vomiting on your own

Whether vomiting is appropriate depends on the substance, dose, timing, the dog’s condition, and the risk of injury from bringing it back up. The Pet Poison Helpline’s emergency instruction is: “Do NOT induce vomiting without consulting a vet or Pet Poison Helpline®.” Follow that direction rather than using a household product or a method found online.

Do not give a home antidote or another medicine

Milk, oil, salt, activated charcoal, over-the-counter products, and other remedies can be unsafe or interfere with care. Do not give any medication unless a veterinary professional tells you exactly what to give and how.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not wait for a dog to “act sick”

Delayed effects mean a normal-looking dog is not proof that the exposure is harmless. Call while the dog is still stable so the professional can decide whether observation at home is appropriate or whether examination is needed.

What the veterinarian or poison specialist will decide

Triage is individualized. The professional will combine the ingredient and strength with the estimated amount, timing, your dog’s weight and medical history, current symptoms, and any other medicines. They may direct you to an emergency hospital immediately or coordinate instructions with the treating veterinarian. If home monitoring is considered safe, ask what signs to watch for, how long to watch, and exactly when to return or call again; follow-up instructions belong to the professional managing your case.

Do not assume that a small missing amount is harmless or that a large amount guarantees a particular outcome. If the quantity is uncertain, the range you provide allows the specialist to work with the most cautious reasonable estimate.

Transporting your dog safely

  1. Take the medication container and any remaining product with you.
  2. Bring the dog in a secure carrier or with a leash and a person able to observe them.
  3. Keep the route and arrival focused on veterinary care; do not stop to administer unapproved remedies.
  4. Tell the clinic about any change during travel, including reduced responsiveness, breathing difficulty, bleeding, or a seizure.

If the dog is already showing a severe sign, transport takes priority over locating a specific poison-control service. Another person can make the call while you leave.

After the immediate event: prevent another exposure

Once your dog has been assessed and the clinic has given its instructions, change how medicines are stored. Keep household and veterinary medicines high up or otherwise inaccessible, and secure pill organizers; these are recommendations in Pet Poison Helpline’s prevention guidance. A lockable medicine-storage box can add a barrier, but it is a prevention aid, not a treatment for an exposure.

  • Return dropped tablets to a secure container immediately instead of leaving them on a counter.
  • Keep visitors’ bags and travel pill cases away from dogs.
  • Do not leave a bottle, blister pack, or dosing syringe where a dog can chew it.
  • Keep an up-to-date list of your dog’s weight, conditions, prescriptions, and supplements for a future call.

Key points to remember

  • Remove access and call a veterinarian, emergency clinic, or poison-control service promptly.
  • Go directly to emergency care for unconsciousness, breathing trouble, bleeding, seizures, or a dog who is not responding.
  • Bring the package and provide the ingredient, strength, possible amount, timing, and your dog’s details.
  • Never induce vomiting or give food, medicine, or a home antidote without professional direction.
  • Normal behavior does not rule out a delayed toxic effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog ate one pill but seems normal. Should I wait and watch?

No. Call your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or an animal poison-control service promptly. Some effects are delayed, and a professional must assess the specific drug, strength, amount, timing, and your dog’s health.

What if I do not know how many tablets are missing?

Call anyway. Give your best estimate or a range, explain when the exposure could have happened, and provide the bottle, package, pill organizer, or a label photograph. Do not delay the call while trying to calculate an exact number.

Should I make my dog vomit?

Not unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you. The substance, dose, timing, and your dog’s condition determine whether vomiting is appropriate, and an unsafe attempt can cause harm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which poison-control number should I use?

In the United States, ASPCA Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661, both with 24/7 service information on their current pages. Check current fees and availability, and do not delay emergency transport for a life-threatening dog.

How much does poison-control help cost?

Pet Poison Helpline’s current service page lists an $89 per-incident fee. ASPCA’s service page says a consultation fee may apply but does not state an amount in the reviewed text. Confirm current charges directly because fees can change.

What should I bring to the emergency clinic?

Bring the original container or package, remaining medication, pill organizer, and a clear label photograph. Tell the clinic the ingredient, strength, possible amount, time window, your dog’s weight and age, health conditions, current medicines, and symptoms.

Can I give milk, food, activated charcoal, or another medicine?

Do not give food, a home antidote, activated charcoal, over-the-counter products, or another medicine unless a veterinary professional tells you exactly what to use. Home remedies can be unsafe or interfere with care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prevent another medication exposure?

After the immediate event is handled, keep household and veterinary medicines high up or otherwise inaccessible, secure pill organizers, and keep visitors’ bags and travel pill cases away from your dog. A lockable medicine-storage box can provide an additional barrier but does not treat an exposure.

The Bottom Line

Remove your dog from the medication, call a veterinarian or poison-control service immediately, and take a dog with severe signs straight to an emergency hospital. Bring the packaging, give the ingredient, strength, possible amount and timing, and never induce vomiting or give a home remedy without professional direction.
