For many common tropical fish, a practical starting range is 75–80°F (24–27°C). Aqueon says most tropical fish prefer 76–80°F, but the right setting depends on the species: some fish need warmer water, and other groups do well at lower temperatures. Identify every fish in the tank and compare its care requirements before choosing a target.
Why there isn’t one temperature for every tropical fish
“Tropical fish” covers species with different temperature needs. The broad 75–80°F range is a starting point, not a universal optimum. Aqueon’s FAQ gives 76–80°F as the preference for most tropical fish, while also directing keepers to check the needs of the particular fish. Aqueon’s temperature guidance and its aquarium FAQ are general husbandry advice, not a substitute for species-specific care guidance.

How to choose a target for a community aquarium
- Identify each fish. Don’t set a heater by the label “tropical” alone; look up the care range for every species.
- Compare the ranges. Check whether the preferred temperatures overlap. A setting between two ranges is not automatically a safe compromise if it leaves either species outside its needs.
- Choose compatible tankmates. If the requirements do not align, reconsider the combination rather than trying to force both groups into one temperature. Aqueon advises selecting fish with matching preferred ranges.
- Maintain a stable shared temperature. Fish are strongly affected by water temperature, and aquarium fish have less opportunity than wild fish to move to more favorable conditions. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that physiological processes are greatly influenced by water temperature in its aquarium fish management guidance.
How to keep the aquarium temperature steady
- Use a heater suited to the aquarium. Merck says a heater is necessary for freshwater and saltwater tropical fish. Follow the heater’s instructions and ensure water circulates around it so heat spreads through the tank.
- Check the water independently. Use a separate, accurate thermometer rather than relying only on the heater setting. Merck Veterinary Manual’s home-aquarium guidance recommends an in-tank thermometer independent from the heater.
- Place the aquarium away from temperature swings. Direct sunlight, drafts, doors, and heating or air-conditioning vents can destabilize water temperature.
- Match replacement water closely. When changing water, bring the replacement water as close as practical to the aquarium’s temperature to avoid a sudden shift.
- Recheck after adjustments. Confirm the actual water temperature with the separate thermometer after changing the heater setting or aquarium position.
Remember that warmer water also affects oxygen
Temperature is not the only factor in fish health. Aqueon explains that warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen while fish metabolism and breathing speed up, increasing their oxygen demand. Keep water movement and aeration appropriate for the aquarium and its inhabitants; a temperature that appears suitable on its own does not guarantee adequate oxygen.

Aqueon’s FAQ describes floating a closed transport bag for 15 minutes to equalize its temperature, then gradually adding aquarium water. This is general guidance from that source, not a procedure guaranteed to fit every fish or transport situation. Follow suitable species-specific instructions and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
