Before you commit to a cat, ask for verifiable medical and behavior information, written records, the status of sterilization and microchipping, the cat’s daily routine, and the exact terms of the placement. If you are considering a kitten, see it with its mother, check where the litter is raised, and confirm the kitten’s age and veterinary care. Policies and legal requirements vary by location, so review the paperwork with your own veterinarian and confirm responsibilities directly with the shelter or breeder.
Start with questions that apply to every cat
Whether the cat comes from a municipal shelter, a foster-based rescue, or a breeder, you need enough detail to judge two things: what care the cat needs now and whether your household can provide it. Ask the questions below in person or by phone, then request the answers and supporting documents in writing.

What is the documented medical history?
Ask whether a veterinarian has examined the cat and request the examination notes, not just a verbal summary. The file should identify vaccinations and dates, parasite treatments, surgeries, current medication, allergies, chronic conditions, resolved illnesses, and any recommended follow-up. Cats Protection advises buyers to ask for vaccination and veterinary-check documentation, while the ASPCA says placement decisions should account for an animal’s medical needs and the adopter’s capacity to manage them (Cats Protection; ASPCA).

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ask specifically, “What is known, and what is unknown?” A shelter may have a complete record for a surrendered cat but little reliable history for a stray. A breeder should be able to discuss the kitten’s litter history and any inherited conditions reported in the parents or family line. Unknown information is not automatically a reason to reject a cat; it is a reason to plan a prompt veterinary examination and budget for uncertainty.

What behavior has actually been observed?
Replace broad labels such as “sweet,” “aggressive,” or “independent” with questions about situations. Ask:
- How does the cat respond to being picked up, touched on the paws, brushed, or placed in a carrier?
- What happens when visitors arrive, the home becomes noisy, or the daily routine changes?
- Has the cat lived with children, dogs, or other cats, and what did staff or foster carers observe?
- Does the cat use a litter tray reliably? Have there been accidents, spraying, scratching, hiding, or biting?
- How does the cat behave during feeding, play, and handling after it has had time to settle?
Ask who made each observation and in what setting. The ASPCA recommends using multiple sources and contexts; a single behavior evaluation has limited ability to predict future aggression or adjustment (ASPCA guidance). Treat behavior information as a matching and support tool, not a guarantee.
Which preventive procedures are complete?
Confirm whether the cat is spayed or neutered. If not, ask whether the organization will arrange the procedure, the expected timing, and whether you must use a specified veterinarian or pay an additional fee. Ask for the microchip number and instructions for registering or transferring it to you. Confirm which vaccines were given, the date of each dose, and when the next dose or veterinary visit is due. Bring the complete record to your veterinarian rather than relying on the organization to transmit it later. The ASPCA and Cats Protection both emphasize clarifying these services and follow-up steps (ASPCA; ASPCA Community Medicine FAQ).
What routine does the cat know?
Ask what food, feeding schedule, litter type, litter-tray location, sleeping area, and play pattern the cat currently uses. A sudden change can add stress during the first days, so ask whether the shelter, foster carer, or breeder can send a small amount of familiar food or bedding. Cats Protection notes that familiar bedding can reassure a kitten during travel and settling in (Cats Protection). If no bedding is available, use a clean towel or blanket in the carrier and introduce new products gradually after the cat is eating and toileting normally.

What are the financial and contractual terms?
Ask for an itemized fee and identify what it includes: examination, vaccines, parasite treatment, sterilization, microchip, registration, transport, supplies, or a post-adoption check. Ask whether any service remains your responsibility and by what deadline. Read the adoption or sales agreement before paying. It should state identification details, known medical or behavioral issues, ownership or transfer terms, follow-up obligations, and the process for returning or rehoming the cat if the placement fails. Do not assume that two organizations use the same rules; fees, included procedures, and return policies are organization-specific.
Records to obtain before the cat leaves
Make a document pack or digital folder and check each item against the cat’s identification number. If a record does not exist, ask the organization to write “not available” rather than leaving you with an ambiguous promise.
| Record or detail | What to verify | Why it matters at your veterinarian |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary examination | Date, findings, diagnosis, treatment, and recommended recheck | Prevents duplicated tests and highlights urgent follow-up |
| Vaccinations | Product or disease covered, date given, dose number, and next due date | Lets the veterinarian build an accurate schedule |
| Parasite control | Worming and flea products, dates, dose, and any test results | Shows when prevention can safely be repeated |
| Surgery and sterilization | Spay/neuter status, procedure date, and discharge instructions | Confirms whether surgery or wound checks remain |
| Microchip | Chip number and registration or transfer instructions | Allows the clinic to verify identity and update contact details |
| Medication and diet | Drug name, strength, schedule, duration, food brand or formulation | Reduces medication errors and stomach upset |
Keep the original agreement and copies of all records. Give your veterinarian the documents at the first appointment and ask the clinic to scan the microchip.

Extra questions for a kitten breeder or seller
Can you show me the kitten with its mother and littermates?
Visit the place where the kittens are actually raised, not only a car park or an unrelated meeting location. Observe whether the mother appears healthy, alert, and comfortable around people. The area should be clean, provide space to move, and expose kittens to ordinary household sounds without forcing interaction. Cats Protection lists seeing the mother and the rearing environment as practical checks for buyers (Cats Protection).

If the seller refuses a visit, will not show the mother, or offers to hand over the kitten unusually quickly, pause the transaction. A video call is not a substitute for an in-person visit when a local visit is reasonably possible.
How old is the kitten, and when did it stop nursing?
Ask for the date of birth and the date the kitten was fully weaned. Cats Protection states: “Before a kitten is rehomed they should stay with their mother until they’re eight to nine weeks old” (Cats Protection). This is organizational guidance, not a universal legal rule; local laws and welfare codes may set different requirements. Confirm the rule that applies where you live and do not accept an age estimate when a dated record can be provided.
What veterinary care has the litter received?
Ask whether a veterinarian examined the kitten and litter, which vaccines and doses are complete, when worming and flea treatments were administered, and whether microchipping has occurred or is scheduled. Request the paperwork for the kitten you will take home, not a generic leaflet for the breed. Ask what inherited illnesses have occurred in the parents or close relatives and whether screening tests were performed. A breeder who cannot explain the family health history should tell you that it is unknown rather than imply that a pedigree alone proves health.
What temperament have you observed?
Ask for examples: Does the kitten approach new people after a short pause? How does it recover from a brief handling session? Has it encountered household noise, grooming, a carrier, or other animals? Temperament develops over time, so the breeder’s observations are useful context, not a promise about the adult cat.

Extra questions for a shelter or rescue
What is known about the previous home?
Ask the shelter to separate documented history from staff or foster observations and from information that cannot be verified. For example, “the former owner reported indoor-only living” is different from “a foster carer observed reliable litter use for three weeks.” Ask how long the cat has been in the shelter or foster home and whether behavior changed after decompression.
What needs and accommodations should I plan for?
Ask about medical needs, mobility limits, dietary restrictions, medication, anxiety triggers, and the routine that has helped. Request a written care plan and a contact for follow-up. The ASPCA advises shelters to consider both the animal’s needs and the adopter’s capacity to meet them (ASPCA). Be candid about your work hours, children, other pets, housing rules, and ability to give medication; accurate information improves the match.
Which services are included in this adoption?
Ask exactly what has been completed and what remains scheduled. Some organizations include health checks, vaccines, microchipping, and neutering where appropriate; Cats Protection describes those services for its own cats, but that practice should not be generalized to every shelter (Cats Protection). Obtain the clinic name, appointment date, and payment responsibility for any outstanding procedure.
How to compare two cats without pretending there is a magic score
When more than one cat could fit your home, compare evidence rather than choosing on appearance or a single short visit. The following framework organizes the questions; it is not a validated scoring system.

Choose the cat whose documented needs and observed behavior fit your real capacity, not the cat with the most reassuring marketing description.
A practical visit and handover sequence
- Before visiting: Check household permission, landlord or local rules, existing-pet vaccination status, transport arrangements, and the budget for routine and unexpected veterinary care.
- During the visit: Observe the cat at rest, during gentle interaction, and around ordinary activity. Ask the behavior questions above and record who answered each one.
- Before paying: Read the agreement, confirm the itemized fee, verify the microchip number, and obtain copies of medical, vaccination, parasite, and surgery records.
- At handover: Collect food and litter details, medication instructions, the next appointment date, contact information, and any familiar bedding the organization can provide.
- On arrival home: Start the cat in a quiet room with water, food, a litter tray, hiding space, and familiar-smelling bedding. Let the cat approach at its own pace instead of carrying it from room to room.
- At the first veterinary visit: Bring every record, have the microchip scanned, review preventive care, and ask what signs require urgent attention.
Red flags that require a pause or a written answer
- The seller will not let you see the kitten with its mother or will not show where the litter lives.
- Dates, names, or identification numbers on records do not match the cat.
- The organization minimizes a condition, refuses to disclose known issues, or will not state what is unknown.
- You are pressured to pay before reading the agreement or are given no receipt or transfer document.
- No one can explain who is responsible for promised sterilization, vaccination, microchipping, or follow-up care.
- The proposed cat’s needs exceed what your household can safely provide, even if you feel an emotional connection.
A red flag is a reason to slow down and seek clarification, not proof of wrongdoing by itself. If answers remain inconsistent or undocumented, walk away and contact another reputable organization.
Questions to copy into your phone
- What is documented about this cat’s health, and what is unknown?
- May I have the veterinary examination, vaccination, parasite, surgery, and medication records?
- What behavior have you observed, in which situations, and for how long?
- Is the cat sterilized and microchipped? Who completes any remaining steps?
- What food, litter, schedule, and bedding is familiar?
- What are the total fees, included services, agreement terms, support, and return process?
- For a kitten: may I see the mother and rearing area, what is the verified birth date, and what hereditary conditions are known?
- For a shelter cat: what previous-home information is verified, what needs require accommodation, and who can answer follow-up questions?
After you bring the cat home
Keep the transition predictable, make changes one at a time, and monitor eating, drinking, toileting, breathing, energy, and medication administration. Contact your veterinarian promptly if the cat is not eating, has repeated vomiting or diarrhea, is struggling to breathe, cannot urinate, or seems severely weak; your veterinarian can tell you how urgently the cat should be seen. Continue updating the microchip registration and keep the placement agreement with the medical file.
