If you might adopt that day, ask the shelter what you need to transport the animal safely: some require a carrier for cats or small animals, while some recommend a leash for dogs. Requirements and visit procedures vary, so confirm them with the specific shelter before traveling.
Quick checklist: what to bring
- Photo ID: Bring a current government-issued photo ID. The ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City, for example, accepts a driver’s license, state ID, or passport and requires the ID to include your date of birth.
- Proof of address: Keep a lease or a recent telephone, utility, or cable bill available in case the shelter asks for separate proof of your current address. The ASPCA recommends having it available; it may not be required in every case.
- Housing permission: Check your lease and building rules to make sure pets are allowed. If the shelter requires it, bring landlord approval, a pet addendum, or proof of home ownership.
- Household information: Be ready to give the names of household members over 18. Ask whether household members or other decision-makers need to come meet the animal.
- Transport equipment: Confirm whether you need a carrier, leash, or other equipment for the species you hope to adopt.
- Time: Allow for a questionnaire, a conversation with staff, and a meet-and-greet. Wait times can vary.

Bring a photo ID and have address proof available
At its New York City Adoption Center, the ASPCA asks adopters for non-expired government-issued photo ID with a date of birth. Its examples are a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport. The ASPCA also says separate proof of current address may be required in some cases; its examples include a lease or telephone, utility, or cable bill. Its mobile adoption guidance similarly recommends bringing address documentation.

These are ASPCA instructions, not a universal rule for every shelter. Check the adoption page or call ahead to find out what your chosen organization accepts and whether it needs address proof.

Confirm that your home allows the kind of pet you are considering, including any relevant size or breed restrictions. Some shelters ask for landlord approval, a pet addendum, or proof that you own your home; bring the document only if your shelter requests it. ASPCA guidance asks visitors to ensure pets are permitted, while individual shelter listings show that the documentation policy varies.

Plan transport based on the animal
Cats and small animals
If you may adopt a cat or kitten, ask whether you need to bring a secure carrier. The ASPCA New York City Adoption Center requires cats and kittens to leave in a carrier, and Oregon Humane requires cats and small animals to leave in one. The ASPCA says its New York center may sell or rent a carrier, and its mobile events say visitors may bring one or receive one at the event. Confirm what is available at your location rather than assuming you can borrow or buy one there.
Dogs
Oregon Humane advises prospective dog adopters to bring a leash. That is its organization-specific guidance, not a rule established for every shelter. Ask whether a leash is needed for the meeting, the trip home, or both.

Other species
Ask the shelter what secure, species-appropriate transport it requires. The policies described here establish carrier requirements for cats and small animals at some organizations; they do not establish one transport rule for all pets.
Who should come with you?
Ask whether all household members or other decision-makers should attend. Oregon Humane encourages the whole family and other decision-makers to come, and individual shelter listings sometimes require household members to meet the prospective pet. Some ask for resident dogs to be introduced, too. Follow the shelter’s instructions about whether to bring a resident pet, and where and when that introduction should happen.

Confirm appointments and the adoption process
Before setting out, check whether you need an appointment, whether you can submit an application in advance, and whether taking a pet home the same day is possible. The ASPCA New York City center describes walk-in and same-day procedures, while Oregon Humane describes walk-through viewing and meet-and-greets. Those processes belong to the organizations that set them; another shelter may do things differently.
A visit may involve an application or questionnaire, a staff conversation, and time with the animal. Ask how long to plan for, especially if you have a deadline or are bringing children.

What varies from shelter to shelter
There is no single checklist that applies to every animal shelter. The examples from the ASPCA, Oregon Humane, and individual Petfinder member shelters show variation in documentation, housing approval, who must attend, resident-pet introductions, transport equipment, appointments, and same-day adoptions. These examples are not a survey of shelters nationwide.
When you contact the shelter, ask about these five points:
