Yes. Cannabis smoke can affect dogs. Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center says second-hand smoke may cause mild signs, although dogs are more often exposed by eating cannabis or edibles. Move your dog away from the smoke and call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice; there is no established safe amount of smoke exposure for dogs.

How cannabis smoke can affect a dog

Dogs can absorb THC by inhaling cannabis smoke. Cornell reports that second-hand smoke inhalation can produce mild signs, while ingestion is the more typical exposure route described in veterinary guidance. Smoke exposure should not be treated as harmless, and the available guidance does not establish a safe dose or smoke level for dogs.

Signs can also have other causes, so they cannot confirm cannabis exposure on their own. If your dog seems unwell after being around smoke, tell a veterinarian what happened rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

Signs of possible cannabis exposure

Signs vary with the dog and exposure. They may include:

  • Urinary dribbling or loss of bladder control

More serious effects described in veterinary references include abnormal body temperature or heart rate, tremors, seizures, coma, and breathing problems. Difficulty breathing, unconsciousness, or a seizure requires immediate veterinary care.

When signs can begin and how long they may last

Timing depends in part on how THC entered the body. The Merck Veterinary Manual says inhaled THC can cause signs within minutes. After ingestion, signs generally begin within one to two hours and may take up to four hours in fasted dogs. That ingestion window is not a precise forecast for a dog exposed to smoke.

Cornell gives a broader onset range of 30 minutes to several hours after cannabis exposure and says signs may last up to 72 hours. Merck reports that signs generally resolve within one to three days. These are broad veterinary ranges, not a prediction of an individual dog’s course; do not wait for signs to pass without getting professional advice.

What to do if your dog was around cannabis smoke

  1. Stop further exposure. Move your dog away from the smoke and into fresh air.
  2. Call for veterinary guidance promptly. Contact your dog’s veterinarian, a nearby emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service. Cornell lists Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 and ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435. ASPCA says its service is available 24/7, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply.
  3. Go to emergency care for severe signs. If your dog has trouble breathing, is unconscious, or is having a seizure, seek immediate veterinary care. Severe sedation or rapidly worsening signs also need urgent professional triage.
  4. Give the veterinarian useful details. Explain whether exposure was inhaled or swallowed, when it happened, what product was involved, and the approximate amount if known. Describe the dog’s signs and bring packaging or ingredient information if available. THC concentration and ingredients such as chocolate or xylitol can matter if an edible was involved.

Do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal to a dog that is already showing signs unless a veterinarian directs you to do so. Sedation may develop quickly, and vomiting can lead to aspiration. Decontamination is a clinician-directed decision for selected patients, not a home treatment.

  • EASY TO USE AND FAST RESULTS: Simply immerse the test into urine for 10 seconds. Bold and solid lines appear instantly. Two lines are present indicate a negative result; if only the control line appears, it's positive.
  • Track Your THC Detox: Utilize this home THC testing kit to gauge the presence of THC in urine. Regular testing can help you observe the decrease in THC levels. Walk you through a detox program, preparing to pass a pre-employment screening, or just random testing.
  • Customer Usage Advisory: This kit is designed to test with human urine only. Testing with any other substance, such as water, is very likely to produce incorrect outcomes. Ensure you use it correctly to pass the test and flush THC out of your system effectively.

If a veterinarian advises home monitoring for a mildly affected dog, keep the dog in a quiet, safe area and prevent access to stairs or other hazards.

How veterinarians assess and treat THC exposure

Diagnosis

Veterinarians generally assess suspected exposure using the history, signs, and physical examination. Human urine drug-screening tests are not reliable for dogs and can give false-negative results; Merck also notes that reliable point-of-care tests are not available for animal cannabis exposure. A negative home or human test therefore does not rule out exposure or replace veterinary advice.

Treatment and outlook

There is no antidote for THC intoxication. Veterinary treatment is supportive and depends on the dog’s condition; it may include fluids, anti-nausea care, temperature and nursing support, monitoring, and, in severe cases, breathing support or medication for seizures. A veterinarian may consider decontamination for a clinically normal dog soon after ingestion, but that is not appropriate to attempt at home.

Most dogs recover with appropriate care. Cornell says recovery commonly takes one to two days, with more severe cases taking up to three days. Merck likewise says signs generally resolve in one to three days; it and ASPCA describe death as rare, though serious illness has been reported. A generally good outlook is not a reason to delay a call when signs appear.

How to prevent exposure

  • Do not smoke cannabis around pets.
  • Keep cannabis and edibles securely out of reach, and secure guests’ belongings as well.
  • Supervise dogs outdoors so they do not eat discarded cannabis remnants.
  • Remember that edibles may contain other hazards, including chocolate or xylitol.

An air purifier or home THC test is not established by the cited veterinary guidance as a way to make exposure safe or replace veterinary advice.
