Before your cat arrives, have eight basics ready: a secure carrier, litter box and litter, food and water dishes, life-stage-appropriate food, a sturdy scratching post or pad, interactive toys, grooming tools, and a safe place to sleep. Set these up in a quiet home-base room, remove household hazards, and ask the shelter, rescue, previous caregiver, or veterinarian about the cat’s current diet, health, and routines.

The essential shopping list

You do not need to fill your home with specialized equipment before adoption. Start with supplies that support transport, elimination, nutrition, scratching, play, grooming, identification, and rest. Add extras after you see how the individual cat behaves and what your veterinarian recommends.

Category Buy before arrival What matters most
Transport Cat carrier It must safely contain the cat for the trip home and future veterinary visits.
Toileting Litter box and litter Choose an accessible location and keep the box clean; the cat’s preferences may determine the best box and litter.
Feeding Food dish, water bowl, and food for the cat’s life stage Match the existing diet initially when possible, and seek veterinary advice for health-related nutrition.
Scratching Stable scratching post or pad Stability and a rough scratching surface are more important than a particular brand or style.
Enrichment A few interactive toys and, if space allows, a perch Offer safe ways to play, climb, watch, and explore without overwhelming the cat.
Grooming Brush and comb Select tools appropriate to the individual cat’s coat and tolerance.
Identification Safety collar and ID tag Use identification appropriate for the cat and keep contact details current.
Rest Cat bed or box, plus a warm blanket or towel A quiet, comfortable hiding and sleeping option helps the cat settle.

Transport your cat safely

Buy the carrier first

A carrier is not just a shopping-list item for adoption day. You will need it for vaccinations, illness, emergencies, and any future move. Have it assembled and accessible before you leave to collect the cat. The available guidance identifies a carrier as essential but does not establish a single best format or model, so choose one that safely contains your cat and fits your travel arrangements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the trip less stressful

Place a towel or blanket inside the carrier and keep the carrier level and secure during travel. Do not plan to carry the cat loose into the house or release it in a car park. At home, take the closed carrier directly to the prepared home-base room before opening the door.

Set up litter before the cat arrives

Choose a quiet, accessible location

Put the litter box where the cat can reach it easily without passing through a busy, intimidating area. Keep it away from feeding stations and from places where household activity could make the cat feel trapped. Show the cat the box after arrival, then keep the route to it clear.

Understand the box guidance

For a multilevel home, general care guidance recommends one litter box per floor so the cat does not have to travel far to eliminate. This is different from problem-solving guidance for a household already dealing with litter-box accidents, which recommends one box per cat plus one extra. Treat the latter as a troubleshooting recommendation, not a universal minimum for every new-cat household.

Keep the box clean

Scoop solid waste at least once a day and clean and refill the box regularly. Unscented litter options are worth offering because some cats avoid strong fragrances. Box type, litter, location, cleanliness, and medical problems can all contribute to elimination difficulties. If the cat stops using the box, do not assume the problem is disobedience: review these factors and contact a veterinarian when illness could be involved.

Buy food and dishes without disrupting the cat’s routine

Start with the food the cat already eats

Ask the shelter, rescue, previous caregiver, or veterinarian for the cat’s current food, feeding schedule, and any known sensitivities. Food should suit the cat’s life stage, and age, activity, and health affect both the diet and the amount needed. A veterinarian can assess an appropriate diet, especially for a kitten, senior cat, underweight cat, or one with a diagnosed condition.

If you need to change foods, ask how to do so safely rather than making an abrupt switch on the first day. The available guidance does not establish a best brand or formula, so do not buy a large supply of an unfamiliar food until you know the cat can eat it comfortably.

Provide separate food and water dishes

Buy a food dish and a water bowl, and keep fresh, clean water available at all times. Wash and refill the bowls daily. Place them in the quiet home-base room, but not directly beside the litter box. Monitor what the cat actually eats and drinks; a sudden change can be useful information for the caregiver or veterinarian.

Give scratching a proper outlet

Choose stability over decoration

“Cats need to scratch!” A scratching post or pad protects furniture by giving the cat an acceptable surface for a normal behavior. ASPCA guidance describes a post as stable, covered with rough material, and at least three feet high; many cats also enjoy horizontal pads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the scratcher where the cat spends time rather than hiding it in an unused corner. A post that wobbles or tips is less likely to be used. If the cat prefers a horizontal surface, add a pad instead of insisting on a vertical post. You can provide more than one option after observing the cat’s preferred angle and material.

Prepare play, climbing, and comfort items

Buy a few interactive toys

Start with a small selection of interactive toys rather than a large pile. Toys create opportunities for movement and engagement, and the cat’s response will tell you what to add. Rotate them so the environment remains interesting, and supervise toys that could be chewed, swallowed, or tangled.

Add a perch when practical

Adoption-preparation guidance suggests a cat perch as an optional enrichment item. A perch can provide a lookout and a place to retreat, but it is not more important than safe flooring, food, water, litter, and a quiet room. Choose a location that is stable and does not expose the cat to an unsecured window or a dangerous drop.

Create a dependable sleeping place

Buy a cat bed, or provide a box with a warm blanket or towel. Some cats prefer an enclosed box, while others choose an open bed or a household blanket. Put the option in the home-base room and allow the cat to decide when to use it. Washable bedding is practical, but the key requirement is a comfortable, safe place to rest.

Buy grooming and identification supplies

Match the brush and comb to the cat

A brush and comb are on the basic checklist, but the appropriate design depends on the cat’s coat and tolerance. Ask the caregiver what has worked previously. Begin with brief, gentle sessions and stop if the cat becomes distressed. Grooming is also a chance to notice mats, skin changes, parasites, or painful areas that merit veterinary attention.

Use a safety collar and ID tag

A safety collar with an ID tag provides visible identification if the cat slips outside or becomes separated from you. Fit it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, check it regularly, and update the tag when your phone number or address changes. A collar does not replace careful doors-and-windows management.

Prepare a quiet home-base room

Keep the first space small and manageable

Choose a quiet room where the cat can decompress without being exposed to the whole household immediately. Put the litter box, food and water dishes, scratching surface, toys, bedding, and carrier there. The room should have a secure door and enough space for the cat to move between resources without feeling cornered.

Introduce the rest of the home gradually as the cat becomes comfortable. Some cats explore quickly; others need more time. Let behavior guide the pace rather than carrying the cat from room to room for a tour.

Remove common hazards

  • Secure electrical cords and other items the cat could chew.
  • Check windows and screens so the cat cannot escape or fall.
  • Remove poisonous plants.
  • Put away pest-control traps and chemicals.
  • Store small, sharp, string-like, or otherwise chewable objects out of reach.
  • Close gaps behind appliances or furniture where a frightened cat could become trapped.

Keep the carrier in this room after arrival. It can become a familiar hiding place instead of an object that appears only when something unpleasant is about to happen.

A practical arrival-day sequence

  1. Before leaving: Confirm the cat’s current food, feeding times, litter preference, medication, medical history, and any handling restrictions with the shelter, rescue, prior caregiver, or veterinarian.
  2. Before the cat enters your home: Finish the hazard check, place the litter box and bedding, fill the water bowl, and portion the familiar food.
  3. During transport: Keep the cat secured in the carrier for the entire journey.
  4. At home: Bring the carrier to the closed home-base room, set it down, and open it there. Do not force the cat out.
  5. During the first hours: Keep voices and activity low. Show the locations of water, food, litter, and scratching supplies, then give the cat space.
  6. Over the next days: Scoop daily, wash and refill bowls daily, observe eating, drinking, elimination, hiding, play, and grooming, and expand access to other rooms gradually.

What to ask before buying extras

Several products may sound useful but are not universal requirements. Before buying a fountain, automatic feeder, specialized litter substrate, elaborate cat tree, extra beds, or a particular toy, consider the cat’s routine and your home’s layout. Ask:

  • What food and litter does the cat use now?
  • Does the cat have allergies, a medical condition, medication, or a prescribed diet?
  • Does the cat prefer covered or open spaces, vertical or horizontal scratching, and particular toy types?
  • How does the cat respond to brushing, nail handling, carriers, and unfamiliar rooms?
  • How many floors and separate quiet areas does your home have?

There is no established product ranking in the available guidance. Use practical fit: accessibility for litter, stability and surface for scratching, life stage and health for food, and the individual cat’s response for toys and grooming tools. When a choice depends on a medical need or an established routine, follow the caregiver’s or veterinarian’s advice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying food without asking what the cat already eats: A sudden change can make it harder to tell whether poor appetite is stress, illness, or an unsuitable diet.
  • Putting the litter box in a hard-to-reach place: A cat may avoid a box that is blocked, crowded, or intimidating.
  • Buying an unstable scratcher: A post that moves when touched can discourage scratching.
  • Opening every room immediately: Too much space and activity can overwhelm a newly arrived cat.
  • Using scented litter by default: Offer an unscented option, particularly if the cat has elimination problems.
  • Assuming accidents are purely behavioral: Box setup and medical issues both matter; consult a veterinarian when elimination changes persist.
  • Overbuying before observing the cat: Start with the essentials, then tailor additions to the cat’s behavior, space, and professional advice.

When your first shopping trip is complete

You are ready for arrival when the cat has a secure carrier, accessible litter, appropriate food and clean water, a stable scratching surface, a few safe toys, grooming and identification supplies, and a comfortable place to hide or sleep. The final preparation is not another product: it is a quiet room, a hazard check, and a plan to let the cat settle at its own pace.
