The dependable way to stop a dog chewing shoes and household objects is to prevent access, provide a safe chew outlet, and calmly redirect and reward the choice you want. Put tempting possessions away, supervise or confine your dog to a genuinely dog-proof space when you cannot watch, and never use an old shoe as a toy.
Chewing is normal, especially for puppies, but destruction that happens mainly when your dog is alone—or comes with barking, pacing, escape attempts, or other distress—may indicate separation-related anxiety. That situation needs veterinary or qualified behavior guidance rather than a chew toy alone.

Why dogs chew shoes, furniture and other possessions
Chewing is a normal canine activity. Dogs investigate objects with their mouths, and puppies often chew while exploring and during teething. Dogs of any age may also chew because the activity is rewarding, because an appropriate outlet is unavailable, or because they are bored, frustrated or stressed.
Puppy exploration and teething
A young dog has many reasons to test the texture and taste of household objects. Shoes, socks, table legs and baseboards are easy to find and provide interesting resistance. Management is especially important during this stage; a puppy cannot reliably follow a household rule that has never been made clear and consistently enforced.

Scent and easy access
Shoes and clothing smell strongly of the people who wear them. Remotes, books and other small objects are also easy to pick up. If an item is left on the floor, a dog can discover it without any human interaction, and chewing may become self-rewarding before anyone notices.
Boredom, unmet chewing needs or stress
A dog with too little physical activity, mental enrichment or suitable chewing material may create its own occupation. Stress can have the same result. The correct response is not simply to punish the damaged item; identify what the dog is missing and change the daily setup.
Destruction linked to being alone
Destruction concentrated around doors or windows, or occurring mainly during absences, deserves a different assessment. The ASPCA lists barking, whining, pacing, restlessness, escape attempts and distress as signs that can accompany separation anxiety. A dog in genuine distress is not being spiteful, and a food toy by itself will not resolve the underlying problem.

Possible guarding
Some dogs become tense, freeze, growl or snap when a person approaches a stolen object. That is a safety issue as well as a chewing issue. Do not reach into the dog’s mouth or forcibly take the item; use qualified behavior help to create a safer plan.

Make the unwanted chewing harder to practice
Management is the first treatment because every successful chewing episode strengthens the habit. AKC and ASPCA guidance both emphasize removing temptation and controlling access.
Put tempting objects out of reach
- Store shoes, slippers, clothing, laundry, remotes, children’s toys and bags in closed cupboards, drawers or lidded hampers.
- Keep charging cables and other small, swallowable objects behind furniture or in cable protection that your dog cannot pull loose.
- Close doors or use gates to block rooms containing furniture, baseboards or other targets.
- Clear floors and low tables before leaving, not only after a problem has occurred.
Do not offer a damaged or unwanted shoe as a “dog shoe.” ASPCA warns that this blurs the rule: the dog cannot understand why one shoe is permitted while another has a different status. Use a purpose-made dog item instead.
Use a safe area when you cannot supervise
When direct supervision is impossible, place the dog in a dog-proof room, pen or other safe space with water, bedding and an approved chew. A crate is not an automatic solution. Use one only if the dog is comfortable there and has been gradually taught to rest in it; crating a distressed dog can add another problem.

Provide an appropriate chew outlet
Redirecting works only when the alternative is appealing and suitable for the individual dog. VCA recommends an alternative with some flexibility and warns that objects that are too hard can fracture teeth. No toy is guaranteed safe for every dog, so inspect the item and supervise its use.
| Outlet | Useful for | Safety checks | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible hollow rubber toy | Chewing and quiet food-based enrichment | Choose a size the dog cannot swallow; check for cracks, torn pieces or excessive wear; supervise early sessions. | A dog that ignores it may need a different shape, texture or filling. |
| Food-stuffed rubber toy | Giving a dog a constructive activity during rest or a short absence | Use food appropriate for the dog and make sure the opening cannot trap the tongue or jaw; observe how the dog works it. | It is enrichment, not a treatment for separation anxiety. |
| Puzzle toy | Mental work for dogs whose chewing is connected to boredom | Begin with an easy level and monitor for destructive attempts to break the toy. | Some dogs need active play or training as well as a puzzle. |
| Another purpose-made chew with some give | Dogs that prefer a different texture | Discard it when pieces loosen; avoid items that are rock-hard or brittle. | Suitability depends on the individual dog’s size, chewing style and supervision. |
Introduce the replacement before a problem
Offer the approved chew while the dog is calm, not only after it steals something. Let the dog investigate it, and praise relaxed interaction. Rotate a small selection so that each item retains interest, but keep only the one being used within reach if the dog tends to destroy toys.
Inspect and supervise
Watch how the dog bites, carries and dismantles a new item. Remove it if pieces break off, if the dog attempts to swallow chunks or if the material is so hard that it will not yield at all. Supervision is particularly important for powerful chewers, puppies and dogs that have already swallowed household objects.

- Interrupt without a confrontation. Use a neutral voice or move close enough to block access without cornering the dog. Do not pull at an object held in the mouth.
- Present the approved chew. Place the safe alternative near the dog and make it more interesting with gentle movement or an appropriate food filling.
- Reward the correct choice. As soon as the dog releases the household item and engages with the approved chew, praise calmly and, when appropriate, give a small food reward.
- Repeat consistently. Every family member should use the same rule: household possessions are not chew toys; purpose-made dog items are.
- Practice when the dog is calm. Set a shoe or other low-value object out of reach, keep the approved chew ready, and reward the dog for orienting toward the permitted item. Stop before the dog becomes overexcited.
Over time, the dog learns that choosing its own chew earns attention and rewards, while stealing possessions does not produce a chase or a tug-of-war.

If the dog is a puppy
Assume that access will be tested. Use gates, closed doors and a clear floor, and keep several approved chew options available. Schedule naps, short training sessions and age-appropriate play so that overtiredness and excess energy do not lead to frantic chewing. Increase freedom in small stages rather than expecting a young puppy to manage an entire home.
If chewing follows long periods of inactivity
Add enrichment before the usual chewing time: a food-stuffed hollow rubber toy, a puzzle activity, a sniffing walk or brief training practice. The goal is to give the dog a legal activity that meets the same need for investigation or occupation. Continue to manage access; enrichment does not make shoes safe to leave on the floor.
If destruction happens during absences
Record what happens after you leave, using a camera if possible, and note whether damage is concentrated near exits. If the dog barks, whines, paces, drools, attempts to escape or becomes distressed as departure approaches, contact a veterinarian. The ASPCA recommends involving a veterinarian, veterinary behaviorist or Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist as appropriate. Until the dog is assessed, arrange the safest feasible supervision or care rather than repeatedly leaving it to panic.

Can a bitter spray stop chewing?
A bitter-tasting spray may deter a dog from a particular fixed surface, such as a piece of furniture, but treat it as an optional aid. AKC and VCA discussions do not establish universal effectiveness. A spray cannot remove the attraction of a shoe, teach the dog what is allowed, provide enrichment or treat anxiety.
If you use one, follow the product label, test it on an inconspicuous area, keep it away from the dog’s eyes and mouth, and observe the dog’s response. Continue to block access and provide an approved alternative. Never spray a chew toy that you want the dog to use.
What not to do
- Do not punish after the damage is done. The dog cannot connect a later reprimand with an earlier act, and punishment can make people approaching stolen objects feel threatening.
- Do not use old household items as toys. This creates an inconsistent rule about shoes, socks and other possessions.
- Do not offer extremely hard chews. VCA warns that excessive hardness can fracture teeth.
- Do not leave a new chew unattended immediately. A toy that is safe for one dog may be rapidly destroyed by another.
- Do not use a crate as a default fix. A crate must be a comfortable, trained safe space, not a place to contain panic.
- Do not force an object from a guarding dog. Back away and seek professional assistance.
- Do not assume a toy cures separation anxiety. Distress requires a cause-based plan and professional assessment.
Troubleshoot the plan
| What you see | Likely adjustment |
|---|---|
| The dog ignores the approved chew and returns to shoes. | Improve management so the shoe is unavailable, then try a different flexible shape or food-stuffing approach. Offer it when the dog is calm and reward engagement. |
| The dog destroys every toy within minutes. | Use only items that withstand the dog’s current chewing style, supervise continuously and remove damaged pieces. Ask a veterinarian about safe options if destruction is extreme. |
| Chewing starts at the same time every day. | Schedule enrichment, exercise and rest before that period, and remove all accessible targets in advance. |
| The dog steals an object and runs away. | Do not chase. Block access to hazards, present the approved chew and reward release; seek behavior help if the dog guards the item. |
| Damage appears only when nobody is home. | Use a camera to document the pattern and contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for possible separation-related distress. |
| An object or pieces of a toy are missing. | Contact a veterinarian promptly for advice, especially if the dog is vomiting, painful, lethargic, choking or unable to pass stool. |
A practical daily prevention routine
- Before activity: Put away shoes, laundry, remotes and cables; close doors or gates to restricted rooms.
- During supervised time: Keep an approved chew nearby and reward the dog for selecting it without being prompted.
- Before a short absence: Use the safe area the dog already accepts, provide a checked food-stuffed rubber toy or puzzle, and remove every competing object.
- After returning: Offer calm attention and inspect the safe area for damaged material rather than scolding for anything found.
- Each week: Examine chew toys, discard worn items and adjust the dog’s enrichment if chewing attempts are increasing.
When professional help is the right next step
Arrange veterinary advice when destruction is sudden, severe, linked to being alone, accompanied by other distress signs, or involves possible ingestion. A veterinarian can look for medical contributors and refer you to a veterinary behaviorist or Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist when needed.
