Before adopting a cat, make sure your household can provide lifelong care, choose a cat whose needs fit your home, and plan for both everyday expenses and veterinary surprises. Ask the shelter about the individual cat’s health and temperament, prepare a quiet starter space, and arrange veterinary care before you bring the cat home.
Can your home and routine support a cat?
Adoption is a commitment for the cat’s lifetime, not just the first few weeks. The American Veterinary Medical Association says an owner is responsible for a cat’s food, shelter, exercise, physical health, and mental health for the rest of its life. Read the AVMA’s guidance on selecting a cat as part of deciding whether that responsibility fits your household.
- Confirm that everyone in the home agrees to having a cat and that your housing allows one.
- Decide who will manage feeding, litter, play, grooming, and veterinary appointments.
- Consider how you will handle travel, a move, emergencies, and changes in household routine.
- If you have children or other pets, think through how you can give a new cat a calm, gradual introduction.
How do you choose a cat that fits?
Choose for compatibility and care needs, not appearance alone. Ask the shelter or rescue about the individual cat’s temperament, age, activity level, social needs, behavior, known health conditions, and response to children or other animals. Ask what is known about indoor or outdoor needs, too, and whether the organization recommends a particular kind of home.
Animal profiles may describe personality and special needs, and the ASPCA’s adoption guidance notes that an adoption organization can help assess whether a pet is a match. Share an honest picture of your household and daily routine so staff can help you compare suitable cats.

Questions to ask about the cat
- What is known about the cat’s medical history, and can I have the records or a written medical summary?
- Which vaccinations, parasite treatments, health checks, neutering, and microchipping have already been completed? What follow-up is due?
- How does the cat respond to handling, children, visitors, and other animals?
- Does the cat have a known condition, behavior concern, or special diet that will require ongoing care?
- What does the organization recommend for this cat’s settling-in period and home environment?
What will it cost to adopt and care for a cat?
Separate the adoption fee from the continuing cost of care. Fees vary by organization and location; they may help cover services such as veterinary care, vaccinations, food, or neutering, but the only reliable way to know what is included is to ask about the specific cat. Request an itemized explanation rather than assuming that all shelters provide the same services.
For a UK illustration, Cats Protection’s estimates, accessed in 2026, list an adult-cat adoption fee of £80–£120 and a kitten fee of £100–£120. Its monthly estimates are £20–£50 for food, £20–£30 for litter, and £25–£50 for insurance. These are UK estimates, not universal prices; local costs and a cat’s individual needs can differ. See Cats Protection’s cat ownership cost guide.

Plan for routine veterinary care as well as unexpected treatment. In the same UK guide, Cats Protection estimates annual checkups at about £50–£80 and annual vaccinations at about £70–£90, while noting that prices depend on location. It says an out-of-hours consultation can exceed £150 in its UK context, with diagnostics and treatment adding substantially more. These figures are not a quote for your local practice: contact nearby vets for current fees and ask how emergencies are handled.
Decide in advance how your household would meet a large unexpected bill. Options may include insurance, savings, or a veterinary payment arrangement. Compare insurance policies for exclusions, excesses, waiting periods, limits, and reimbursement terms. The ASPCA notes that many policies have waiting periods and exclude pre-existing conditions; insurance does not cover every condition, so check the actual policy wording before relying on it.

What should you ask the shelter about veterinary care?
Confirm which care has already been provided and what remains due. Cats Protection describes its own rehoming care as including a veterinary health check, flea and worm treatment, at least one vaccination against cat flu and feline enteritis, neutering if the cat is old enough, and microchipping for cats over 12 weeks. Those are Cats Protection’s practices, not a standard that can be assumed for every organization.
Ask for records, medication or diet instructions, and any recommended follow-up. Before adoption, identify a nearby veterinary practice and ask about routine appointments, vaccination advice, parasite prevention, emergency hours, fees, payment options, and referrals. A veterinarian can advise on the individual cat’s health and diet.

How should you prepare your home?
Set up a quiet, private starter room or area where the cat can hide and decompress before exploring. Remove hazards, secure windows and doors, manage cords and cleaning products, and check that plants are safe. Keep the first days calm by limiting visitors and preventing children or resident pets from overwhelming the new arrival.
Starter supplies
- Food and water bowls, plus the food the cat is currently eating if the organization can provide or identify it.
- A litter tray and litter, positioned away from food and water.
- A comfortable bed or a safe hiding place.
- A sturdy scratching post, toys, and a brush suited to the cat.
- A sturdy, well-ventilated carrier for the journey home and future veterinary visits.
For a home with more than one cat, Cats Protection recommends one of each key item per cat plus one extra, including litter trays. See its new-cat preparation guidance for additional setup advice.

Should you get a kitten?
A kitten is not automatically the best choice for every home. Compare a kitten’s age and energy needs with the time and care your household can provide, and ask the organization what it knows about that kitten’s health and temperament. Use the same questions for an adult cat; age alone does not establish which individual will suit your home. The shelter or rescue can help you weigh the match rather than choosing on appearance or age alone.
How can you help a new cat settle in?
Transport the cat in a secure carrier and let it explore the starter space at its own pace. Cats Protection suggests placing a familiar item of clothing or a blanket with the cat so familiar scent is present in the carrier and new space. Avoid forcing contact; provide hiding places and let the cat choose when to approach.
Adjustment can take a few weeks, according to Cats Protection’s bringing a cat home guidance. Introduce children, visitors, and resident pets gradually. If concerning health signs or settling problems arise, contact the adoption organization or a veterinarian rather than assuming they are simply part of adjustment.
