A ticked tabby is a cat whose coat looks finely shaded or speckled because many individual hairs have alternating bands of pigment. Unlike classic, mackerel, or spotted tabbies, it usually has few bold markings across the body. Abyssinians are the best-known example, but ticking is a coat pattern, not proof of a particular breed.
1. The pattern is visible in individual hairs
In a ticked coat, pigment changes along each hair shaft, producing alternating bands of color. Seen across the coat, those banded hairs create an even, softly shaded or peppered appearance rather than large, sharply outlined body marks. The 2021 study summarized by OMIA describes ticked cats as having agouti hairs throughout the coat.
2. Ticked cats are still tabbies
A coat that lacks obvious torso stripes is not necessarily outside the tabby family. The ticked form is described in genetic literature as an agouti phenotype in which visible tabby markings are reduced or suppressed. In other words, the coat can carry tabby-related patterning while showing it in a less familiar way.
3. Ticking looks different from stripes, spots, and swirls
Classic or blotched, mackerel, and spotted tabbies are recognized by visible markings across the body. Ticking is distinguished by pigment bands within hairs and the overall finely shaded effect. The 2010 study of domestic-cat coat patterns also implicates multiple genomic regions in stripes and spots, cautioning against explaining every visible pattern with one simple genetic switch.

4. Abyssinians are famous for ticking, but they are not the only cats with it
The Abyssinian is strongly associated with a ticked coat, and breed standards also describe ticked tabby in Somali cats. TICA’s Abyssinian breed description highlights the characteristic coat; its universal standard includes both Abyssinian and Somali. A coat pattern by itself does not establish a cat’s breed or ancestry.
5. A ticked cat can still have some visible markings
“Ticked” does not guarantee a completely stripe-free appearance. TICA’s universal standard allows for variation, including possible shading or markings on the face, legs, and tail. The overall body may look evenly ticked even when those areas show more noticeable pattern.

6. Researchers have proposed specific variants, but the genetics are not a one-line explanation
OMIA summarizes the ticked trait as autosomal dominant and reports that a 2021 study identified two DKK4 variants suggested to influence the phenotype. The study investigates the Ticked locus using the 99 Lives cat genome database. These findings make the genetic picture more specific, but they should not be read as a complete explanation of every coat feature in every ticked cat. Other visible tabby arrangements also involve multiple implicated genomic regions.
7. A proposed origin for the gene is not the same as the breed’s birthplace
A UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory chapter says genetic studies point to coasts bordering the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia as the most convincing proposed origins for the mutated Abyssinian ticked-tabby gene. That statement concerns the gene’s proposed geographic origin; it does not prove the exact birthplace or full history of the modern Abyssinian breed.

How ticked differs from non-agouti
Ticked and non-agouti are not interchangeable terms. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory explains that a non-agouti cat may retain tabby pattern genetically while its visible expression is altered because the hairs appear uniformly colored. Ticking, by contrast, is associated with banded agouti hairs that create the shaded coat effect.
