After the animal has finished and moved away, pick up leftover food and any bowls or containers you brought. Give the animal space rather than trying to catch or follow it. If it seems sick or injured, contact a local veterinarian, animal-welfare group, shelter or animal-control service for instructions. If you were bitten or scratched, wash the wound and seek prompt medical advice.
What should you do immediately after feeding?
- Wait for the animal to move away. Do not crowd it, chase it or try to handle it just because it has eaten. A frightened or unwell animal may react unpredictably. Let it choose its escape route, and keep children and other animals back.
- Collect the food and containers. Pick up leftovers and remove any food or water bowls you brought. The Singapore AVS-supported handbook Feeding Stray Dogs Responsibly advises supervising feeding where feasible and cleaning up after the dogs finish. If you cannot supervise, it recommends tracking where food was moved and clearing remnants and receptacles afterward.
- Check for an immediate concern. If the animal looks injured or unwell, seek local professional guidance rather than leaving it to fend for itself or attempting an unsafe rescue. If you have been bitten or scratched, deal with your own wound promptly as well.
- Decide whether this is a one-off encounter or a found-animal situation. A cat may have an owner, and local rules may specify what to do with a stray dog or cat. Before making feeding a routine, check for an owner and find out which local service handles found animals.
- Record useful details without pursuing the animal. Note the species, exact location, time, visible injury or illness and the direction it went. Give those details to a veterinarian, shelter, council or animal-control service if you call. Do not follow it into traffic, dense vegetation or private property.
Cleaning up is practical as well as considerate. The Singapore handbook notes that food left behind can attract rodents, while containers that collect rainwater can support mosquito breeding. It recommends emptying and removing water bowls after dogs leave. Those are reasons to avoid unattended food and receptacles; they do not establish a universal legal rule, because local requirements differ.

“Please clean up after feeding” is the central practical instruction in that handbook. In practice, cleanup means taking away uneaten food, disposable packaging and any bowl or container you supplied, not merely moving them a short distance. If another person is feeding and you cannot stay, tell them where food was moved so remnants can be cleared.

How should you behave around the animal while it leaves?
Let the animal leave on its own and keep enough distance to avoid cornering it. For free-roaming dogs, Singapore’s Animal & Veterinary Service advises staying calm and walking away. It says not to stare at, chase, hit or run from the dog, and to avoid sudden movements. This is Singapore guidance for encounters with free-roaming dogs, not a complete handling protocol for every species or location.

What should I do when I encounter a free-roaming dog?
Remain calm, give the dog space and walk away rather than trying to touch it or make it follow you. Do not assume that a dog that accepted food is friendly. If it blocks a path, appears distressed or is near traffic, keep your distance and call a local animal service for instructions. Describe the location and behavior; do not attempt to restrain it unless a trained professional tells you how.
If you need help because an animal is blocking your path, seems distressed or cannot move safely, contact a local animal service for advice rather than attempting to restrain it. Do not assume that eating means an unfamiliar animal is tame or safe to approach. The safer choice depends on the animal’s condition, species and surroundings.
What if the animal appears sick or injured?
Contact a local veterinarian, animal-welfare organization, shelter or animal-control authority and explain what you observed and where the animal is. Ask what to do before trying to move it; local organizations can advise on the appropriate response and the services available in your area. Tell them whether the animal can walk, whether there is visible bleeding or breathing trouble, and whether it is defensive, but do not delay a call while trying to make a diagnosis.
Cats Protection’s UK guidance says: “If you find a cat who is sick or injured, take them to a local vet as soon as possible.” It advises phoning the vet before arrival. If a cat must be transported, it mentions using a cat carrier or a cardboard box and taking care when approaching an unfamiliar cat. Do not treat a carrier as a requirement to buy: a suitable box is also identified in that guidance, and you should seek advice if approaching the cat would be unsafe.

For an injured or ill animal of another species, do not assume the cat-specific advice applies. Contact the relevant local professional or animal service for instructions on that animal and on whether it should be approached or transported. A wildlife encounter, a dog that is behaving aggressively and a weak domestic cat can require different services. The correct destination may be a vet, shelter, animal-control authority or welfare group, depending on local arrangements.
If it is a cat, how can you tell whether it may belong to someone?
Before feeding a cat repeatedly, consider that it may be owned and may have a special diet or medical condition. Cats Protection advises trying to find the owner; it also cautions that feeding can keep an owned cat from returning home. Follow your local found-animal procedure rather than deciding from a single sighting that the cat is unowned.
The question “Should you feed a stray cat?” has no universal yes-or-no answer. A cat that looks well may be lost or owned, so repeated meals can interfere with its return. A cat that is particularly underweight may need limited food while you seek help. Food can also be used to guide a cat into a carrier for a veterinary visit, but only if doing so is safe and appropriate.

Its cat-specific options include cat food; plain cooked chicken or turkey without bones, skin or seasoning; plain cooked white fish without bones; and canned fish in water rather than oil or brine. It advises against milk because it can upset cats’ stomachs. These options are not general feeding advice for dogs, wildlife or other animals.

If you are unsure whether a cat is lost, stray or feral, ask a local vet, shelter or animal-welfare group how to proceed. Finding an owner and reporting the animal may be more useful than establishing a routine at a feeding spot. Ask what information the service needs and whether local rules require the cat to be taken to a council, shelter or participating veterinarian.
What should you do after a bite or scratch?
Wash the wound promptly and seek professional medical advice. India’s National Rabies Control Programme advises washing a bite or scratch with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then seeking a healthcare assessment promptly. Cleaning is first aid, not a substitute for assessment of possible rabies exposure.
That specific instruction comes from India’s programme. If you are elsewhere, contact your local health service and follow its exposure guidance; do not assume the correct medical steps are identical in every country. If the animal can be identified without approaching or endangering anyone, tell the healthcare professional what species it was and where and when the incident occurred. Do not try to catch the animal to prove its identity.
Seek advice even when a mark looks minor. A scratch, bite or saliva contact can have implications that are not apparent immediately, and the healthcare professional can decide whether further treatment or observation is needed.

Which local rules and services apply?
There is no single rescue or legal pathway for every stray animal. The appropriate next step depends on whether there is an urgent injury or bite, what species is involved, whether the animal may be owned, whether anyone can approach it safely and what procedure the local authority requires.
| Situation or location | What the cited guidance says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Stray dogs in Singapore | The AVS-supported handbook recommends clearing leftover food and receptacles. It says feeding in nature reserves, nature parks and public parks is prohibited there unless permission is obtained, and discusses Singapore littering rules. | Use the clean-up advice as practical guidance, but check Singapore rules for the location where you are. Do not apply those restrictions to other jurisdictions. |
| Found stray cats or dogs in Victoria, Australia | Agriculture Victoria’s Animal Welfare Victoria guidance, last updated 2 September 2026, says to take a found stray cat or dog as soon as reasonably possible to the relevant council, a vet that agrees to accept lost pets, a registered shelter or another specified local arrangement. | Check the Victorian procedure and the relevant council or service; do not assume the same hand-in route applies elsewhere. |
| Bite or scratch in India | The National Rabies Control Programme advises washing with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seeking prompt healthcare assessment. | Follow this India-specific guidance in India. In other countries, use the local health service’s advice on animal exposures. |
These examples show why a generic instruction such as “take every stray to a shelter” can mislead. In Victoria, the stated hand-in options include particular local services; in Singapore, the cited dog-feeding guidance includes location-specific restrictions; elsewhere, the correct service may be different. When in doubt, contact the local council, animal-control authority, veterinarian or animal-welfare organization and ask which agency handles the species and circumstances.

- There is an injury or illness: contact a local veterinarian or animal-welfare service promptly and ask how to proceed. For an injured cat in the UK, Cats Protection advises calling the vet before arrival.
- You have been bitten or scratched: wash the wound and contact a healthcare professional promptly. Apply the health service’s guidance for your location.
- The animal appears uninjured and has left: clear the food and containers you brought. If it is a cat, consider whether it may be owned before feeding it again.
- You cannot safely approach: do not try to catch, carry or corner the animal. Give the service you contact its location and a description, and follow its instructions.
- You are considering feeding it again: first check for an owner and learn the local rules and found-animal procedure. A feeding routine may affect an owned cat’s ability to return home.
- The animal is in a public or protected place: check the authority responsible for that site before feeding again. Singapore’s restrictions in parks and nature reserves illustrate why the location matters.
The details that matter are urgency, species, possible ownership, safe handling and local procedure. A one-time feeding with no apparent injury calls for cleanup and thoughtful follow-up; an injured animal, an unsafe approach or a bite calls for professional help rather than more direct contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I leave water out for a stray animal?
Not unattended. Remove any water bowl you brought after the animal leaves. The Singapore handbook notes that containers collecting rainwater can support mosquito breeding, and it recommends emptying and removing bowls after dogs leave.

Can I take an injured stray cat straight to a vet?
Cats Protection advises taking a sick or injured cat to a local vet promptly and phoning ahead. Ask the vet or an animal-welfare service whether it is safe to approach and transport the cat; a cat carrier or cardboard box may be used, but buying a carrier is not required.
How long should I wash a bite or scratch?
India’s National Rabies Control Programme advises soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, followed by prompt healthcare assessment. Elsewhere, follow your local health service’s animal-exposure guidance.
Should I keep feeding a cat that visits my home?
First try to establish whether it has an owner. Cats Protection warns that feeding an owned cat can keep it from returning home. Ask a local vet, shelter or welfare organization about found-cat procedures before establishing a routine.

Let the animal leave, remove every leftover and container you brought, and keep your distance. Treat illness, injury, bites and scratches as reasons to contact the appropriate professional promptly. For cats, look for an owner before making feeding routine; for every species, follow the rules and found-animal procedure where you are.
