If a breeder delays or cancels your kitten reservation, start with the written agreement, save every transaction record, and ask the breeder to explain the change and available options in writing. Whether you can get a deposit back depends on the contract and the law where you live; there is no universal refund rule.
What to check before deciding what to do
Find the signed reservation or sales agreement and read the sections that apply to your situation. TICA advises buyers to use a written contract and understand its health-guarantee and return-policy terms in its Pet Buyer’s Guide.
- Does the agreement identify the specific kitten, or allow a change to another kitten or litter?
- Does it give an expected pickup or transfer date, and say what happens if that date changes?
- What does it say about breeder cancellation, deposits, repayment, or a refund process?
- Are there conditions you must meet before the sale is completed?
Keep a copy of the agreement, listing, receipt or payment confirmation, reservation messages, and every later explanation or promised date. Save them together and note when each promise was made.
Ask the breeder for a clear written update
Pause further payments until the breeder explains the change and you have checked the agreement. Use a communication channel that leaves a record. Ask the breeder to confirm:

- Whether the original kitten is still available and what caused the delay or cancellation.
- The specific date they now expect the sale or pickup to happen, and what they propose if that date is missed.
- What options are available under the agreement, including a revised date, another kitten, or cancellation.
- How money already paid would be treated under each option.
A revised date, transfer to another kitten, or cancellation with repayment may be possible outcomes to discuss, but none is guaranteed by general breeder-association guidance. TICA describes written agreements and health guarantees as good buying practice; that guidance does not decide what a particular breeder owes before the kitten is transferred. Compare the options before agreeing
Use the agreement and the breeder’s written response to weigh the choices. If you are considering a delay or replacement, consider:

- Whether the option fits the agreement’s terms.
- Whether the new timing is specific and credible.
- Whether you still want a kitten from this breeder.
- Whether your payment transfers to another kitten or is returned.
- Whether the change adds obligations or alters other terms.
- Which consumer or contract rules apply where you live.
Before accepting a replacement, get the new kitten’s description, timing, price and deposit treatment, and any changed terms in writing. If you want to cancel, state the remedy you are requesting and identify the agreement term you are relying on. Keep the message calm and avoid legal claims you have not verified.
If the breeder will not resolve it or seems suspicious
Be cautious if the breeder pressures you to pay quickly, demands a large upfront payment, requests a wire transfer or gift card, or avoids phone or in-person contact. TICA flags these as warning signs in its Pet Buyer’s Guide. Verify the breeder’s identity and cattery details independently before sending any more money.

If the breeder is unreachable or you suspect a scam, contact your payment provider promptly to ask about its dispute process. A payment dispute is not guaranteed to succeed. If the breeder is simply refusing to honor an agreement, check your local consumer-protection options or seek legal advice specific to your location and contract.

TICA recommends a written sales agreement and advises buyers to understand its health guarantee, return policy, and health-record provisions. These are buying recommendations, not a universal rule that a delay triggers a refund.

Registration-paper guidance is a separate issue. CFA says it cannot assist in obtaining papers when registration is conditional on completing the sales contract until the contract terms are completed; this does not establish a deposit-refund process. TICA’s FAQ likewise addresses a breeder’s commitment to provide registration papers when the written agreement promises them, not the outcome of a cancelled reservation.
