What to Do If a Moose Blocks a Road or Trail

Stop, give a moose the route, and never try to scare it away. Here is how drivers, hikers, cyclists and dog owners should respond—including what to do if it charges.

Stop well short of the moose, give it the right of way, and do not try to make it move. In a vehicle, slow down, stay inside if you can stop safely, and wait or turn around. On foot or by bicycle, wait quietly or take a wide detour. Never honk, shout, throw objects, approach, feed, or attempt to herd a moose. If it notices you, retreat slowly; if it charges, get behind a solid barrier. Should it knock you down, curl up and protect your head and neck.

First decisions: stop, create space, and yield the route

  1. Stop before you enter the moose’s personal space. Leave enough room for the animal to move without feeling cornered. Do not assume a stationary moose is calm; it may be resting, feeding, protecting a calf, or reacting to the narrow route.
  2. Choose waiting or rerouting. Alaska Department of Fish and Game advises finding an alternative route or waiting for the moose to leave. Parks Canada gives the same basic advice on trails. A route may be easier for the animal than the surrounding terrain, so forcing it off the road or path can provoke a defensive response.
  3. Keep your movements non-threatening. If the moose has not noticed you, leave quietly. If it has noticed you but is not charging, speak in a calm voice and back away slowly. Keep a tree, large rock, building, or other substantial object between you and the animal whenever possible.
  4. Control people and dogs. Keep companions together and prevent anyone from approaching for a photograph. A dog must remain leashed or under reliable physical control; do not allow barking, chasing, or investigation.

Do not try to solve the blockage by scaring the moose. Alaska wildlife officials warn that an animal may turn and attack a person or vehicle attempting to haze it, and Alberta guidance specifically says not to honk to drive a moose from a road.

If you are driving

Approach slowly and scan beyond the first animal

Reduce speed as soon as you see a moose or roadside warning signs. Scan both shoulders and the area beyond the animal: more than one moose may be present, including a cow with a calf. A moose that appears to be leaving can change direction abruptly, so avoid passing close behind or in front of it.

Stay in the vehicle when stopped safely

Stop only where you can do so without creating a collision risk. Remain inside the vehicle, and use hazard lights when appropriate for the road and traffic conditions. Do not get out to take a picture, push the animal, or investigate its behavior. If stopping has created a traffic queue, Parks Canada advises moving on rather than adding to the congestion; choose a safe place to turn around or wait elsewhere.

When the road stays blocked

Wait at a safe distance or take another route. Do not creep forward to pressure the moose, drive onto a shoulder to squeeze past, or use the horn. A startled moose can move unpredictably and may respond toward the vehicle. If the animal is injured, trapped in a developed area, or creating an immediate public-safety hazard, contact the local wildlife authority, park staff, or emergency service instead of attempting a rescue.

If a collision occurs

Follow the jurisdiction’s emergency and reporting procedures. Pull over only when it is safe, check occupants, and contact emergency services if anyone is injured or the roadway is dangerous. Do not approach a possibly injured moose; even a severely hurt animal can kick or charge.

If you are walking, cycling, or hiking

Give the trail to the moose

Stop and let the animal decide when to leave. On a narrow path, do not edge past it or try to squeeze between the moose and vegetation, water, a drop-off, or another obstacle. Wait quietly, turn around, or make a broad detour that preserves generous distance. Cyclists should stop rather than riding toward the animal; a bicycle’s speed and movement can add pressure to an already confined encounter.

When the moose has not seen you

Back out along the way you came, moving quietly and avoiding sudden gestures. Do not call to companions near the animal, and do not stop for a closer view. Once you are well away, choose a different route.

When the moose has seen you

Use a calm voice, avoid direct advances, and retreat slowly. Keep a large tree or rock between you and the moose if one is available without requiring you to move closer. Do not turn the encounter into a test of whether the animal will yield.

Never approach a calf

A calf may be alone in your view while its mother is nearby. Cow moose can be especially defensive around young. Leave the area the way you came, and do not call, touch, photograph, or attempt to move the calf.

Distances: useful agency guidance, not a guarantee

Distance recommendations vary by jurisdiction and are intended to keep people from crowding wildlife, not to create a guaranteed safe radius. Terrain, the animal’s behavior, the presence of a calf, and your available escape route matter at least as much as a number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Agency guidance Published distance How to use it
Parks Canada, 2025 30 metres (100 feet), described as about three bus lengths, for moose and deer Use as a minimum planning reference where that park’s rules apply; increase it when the animal is agitated or the route is confined.
National Park Service, Kenai Fjords, 2026 25 metres (25 yards) as stated on the park page Follow the park’s local instruction and treat the published figure as guidance rather than a universal threshold.

These figures come from particular agencies and locations. Follow signs, ranger instructions, and local wildlife rules when they are more restrictive.

Recognize agitation before it becomes a charge

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Alberta wildlife officials, and Parks Canada list several behaviors associated with an agitated moose. No single cue predicts exactly what the animal will do. Treat any of them as a reason to increase distance and move toward cover.

Observed behavior Safer response
Head lowered or swaying; ears laid back Stop advancing, retreat slowly, and place a substantial object between you and the moose.
Hair raised along the neck or back Assume the animal is stressed; abandon the route rather than waiting nearby for a closer look.
Snout or lip licking, snorting, or other tense facial behavior Increase space without shouting or gesturing.
Foot stomping Move away immediately but steadily; do not answer with a horn, whistle, or thrown object.
Short charge or rush that stops Do not interpret it as harmless play. Continue retreating and get behind cover.

What to do if the moose charges

Get behind something solid

Move away from the animal and toward a tree, large rock, building, vehicle, or another barrier that can block its path. The Utah DWR generally advises not running during an ordinary encounter, while the National Park Service’s Kenai Fjords guidance allows taking cover or running when a charge appears imminent. The distinction is the animal’s escalation: calmly back away when it has noticed you but is not charging; use urgent movement to reach cover when a charge seems likely.

If you are knocked down

Curl into a ball, cover your head and neck with your arms, and remain still until the moose withdraws. Do not jump up and chase after it. Once it has moved away, leave the area and seek medical help for any injury.

Do not rely on a tree only as a last-second idea

Identify possible cover as soon as you see the moose. A tree or rock is useful only if you can reach it without moving closer to the animal. Avoid backing toward a cliff edge, deep water, traffic lane, or other hazard while watching the moose.

Why dogs change the risk

Wildlife agencies warn that moose may perceive dogs as predators. A barking or running dog can trigger a defensive response that would not occur with a quiet person at the same distance. Keep the leash short enough to maintain control without allowing the dog to lunge. Do not send a dog ahead to check the trail, and do not release it to distract or chase the moose.

If a loose dog has run toward the animal, do not charge after it or place yourself between the dog and moose at close range. Call the dog only if you can do so without advancing; otherwise retreat toward cover and follow local wildlife or emergency instructions.

Seasonal and local situations that deserve extra caution

Situation Why caution increases Practical choice
Cow with calf The mother may defend young even when the calf appears calm or alone. Leave the area and never approach, feed, or photograph the calf.
Bull during rut Mating-season behavior can make bulls more reactive. Take a wide detour and avoid lingering near roads, trails, or staging areas.
Deep winter snow Moose may use packed roads and trails because deep snow is harder to travel through; crowding can make them fall or attack. Expect animals on established routes, slow down early, and yield rather than forcing them into deep snow.

Parks Canada’s Kouchibouguac guidance identifies mid-May through June as a period of particular cow defensiveness and mid-September through December for bull mating-season aggression. Those dates describe that park’s local guidance, not a universal calendar for every moose range. Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s January 2022 notice likewise linked road and trail use to difficult snow conditions.

When and how to report the encounter

Report a moose that is repeatedly aggressive, trapped in a developed area, injured, or creating a public-safety hazard. Contact the relevant park staff or wildlife agency; in Alaska, public-safety concerns may be directed to local state troopers. Parks Canada asks visitors to report agitated or aggressive moose to park staff, and Utah wildlife officials advise reporting certain animals in heavily populated areas.

Use local emergency channels when people face immediate danger, a collision has occurred, or the animal is blocking an active roadway in a way that could cause a crash. Give the dispatcher the exact location, direction of travel, number of animals, presence of a calf, observed behavior, and whether anyone is injured. Do not approach the moose to obtain a closer photograph or a more precise description, and never attempt to relocate it yourself.

Common mistakes that turn a sighting into a confrontation

  • Horns, shouting, or whistles: startling the moose can send it toward people or traffic.
  • Closing the distance for a photograph: a telephoto image is safer than moving closer; if you do not have enough distance, leave instead of taking the picture.
  • Trying to pass on a narrow trail: this removes the animal’s escape route and can provoke a defensive response.
  • Assuming a quiet animal is harmless: watch body language and preserve distance even when it is feeding or standing still.
  • Letting a dog investigate: barking and chasing can make the moose treat the dog as a predator.
  • Treating a bluff charge as permission to stay: a short rush is still an escalation; continue retreating and seek cover.
  • Blocking a road while watching: if traffic builds, leave when safe and report the animal rather than creating a second hazard.

A simple decision path

  1. See the moose: stop early and assess traffic, terrain, companions, dogs, and possible cover.
  2. It has not seen you: leave quietly and choose another route.
  3. It has seen you but is calm: speak softly, back away, and wait or detour.
  4. It shows agitation: increase distance now and place a solid barrier between you and it.
  5. It charges: reach cover; if knocked down, curl up and protect your head and neck until it retreats.
  6. People remain at risk: contact park, wildlife, public-safety, or emergency officials without approaching the animal.
