Stop, give the moose plenty of space, and do not try to pass close. If it has not noticed you, avoid drawing closer and wait or take a wide detour. If it has noticed you, stay calm and slowly back away. If it charges, get behind substantial cover; if it knocks you down, curl up, protect your head and neck, and wait until it retreats.

What to do first: stop and make room

Moose use trails and may stand their ground rather than move aside. When you see one, stop before approaching and give it as much space as the terrain allows. Do not walk toward it, feed it, or try to herd it off the trail. A moose that appears calm is still a wild animal, not an invitation to get closer. Alberta wildlife guidance specifically advises keeping distance even when an animal appears calm or friendly.

If the animal is blocking your route, wait for it to leave or choose a wide detour that does not bring you close or cut off its way out. Parks Canada advises visitors at Kouchibouguac National Park to keep at least 30 m (100 ft) away and to wait or detour on a trail. Kenai Fjords National Park gives a local recommendation of at least 25 yards (25 m). These are recommendations from particular parks, not a single universal distance that applies to every moose or location. Follow the guidance and signs for the place where you are hiking; if you cannot maintain the stated distance, do not attempt to squeeze past.

Think of the trail as the moose’s route too. Yield rather than trying to make the animal move, and do not choose a detour that corners it or blocks its escape. If the only way forward would take you close, waiting or turning back is safer than forcing a pass. Keep reassessing your distance as the moose moves; do not close in for a better view or photograph.

If the moose has not noticed you

Do not use the opportunity to get a closer look or a photo. Kenai Fjords National Park advises keeping the animal unaware if possible. Stay back, avoid drawing its attention, and wait or retreat along a route that does not bring you nearer. If the trail offers no safe way around, turn back rather than trying to move the moose.

If it has noticed you

Stay calm and slowly back away. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) recommends retreating in the direction you came. Do not crowd the animal or block its escape route. Keep moving away without approaching to test its reaction; if it remains in your path, keep the distance and use another route when you can do so safely. The goal is to increase separation, not to make the moose leave on your schedule.

Recognize signs that a moose is agitated

Watch the animal’s posture and behavior while you create distance. Utah DWR, Alberta wildlife guidance, the National Park Service (NPS), and Parks Canada identify warning signs that can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A lowered head or ears pinned or laid back.
  • Raised hair along the neck, sometimes called hackles.
  • Licking its snout or lips, snorting, or stomping a foot.
  • Swaying its head or making a short charge.

No single cue needs to be present for you to take the animal seriously. If you notice any of these behaviors, treat them as a warning that the moose is uncomfortable: increase distance and look for cover. Do not wait for several signs to appear or for the animal to charge before changing your plan.

A short or bluff charge is still a serious warning: do not stand your ground to find out whether the next one will make contact. Move away and put a substantial obstacle between you and the moose if you can. The point is not to diagnose whether a charge is a bluff; it is to get farther away and protect yourself.

If the moose charges, get behind solid cover

If a charge begins or appears imminent, prioritize getting a substantial obstacle between yourself and the moose. Move behind a large tree or rock; a building or vehicle can provide shelter if one is immediately available. NPS says to take cover or run away if a charge seems imminent. Alberta also advises moving toward a car, tree, or building for cover when charged. The advice to run is specific to an imminent or active charge; it is not the default response when a moose is simply present. Before that point, remain calm and retreat slowly.

Do not rely on the hope that a moose will stop, that a charge is only a bluff, or that it will not pursue you. NPS notes that moose generally do not chase far, but that is not a promise you should depend on in an encounter. The immediate aim is to get behind something solid, not to outrun or confront the animal. If it changes direction or approaches again, keep using cover to maintain separation.

On a trail, use the nearest substantial cover you can reach without moving toward or past the moose. A large tree or rock is the kind of obstacle identified in park guidance; a building or vehicle is shelter if it is immediately available. Do not pause in the open to see whether the animal will continue. If the charge seems imminent, act to reach cover.

If a moose knocks you down

Curl up on the ground and protect your head and neck. Remain still and wait for the animal to retreat. NPS advises moving only after the moose has backed away to a safe distance, because it may renew an attack. Getting up or moving too soon can bring you back into its path; wait until it has clearly withdrawn before you leave the area.

This is a separate response from the one for a charge while you are still on your feet: if you are knocked down, do not try to get up while the moose remains close. Stay curled up, shield your head and neck, and wait. Once it has backed away to a safe distance, leave the area rather than approaching it again.

Why bull, cow, calf, and dog encounters can differ

Bulls during the breeding season

Bulls can be more territorial and aggressive during the fall breeding season, but the timing varies by location and source. Utah DWR describes bull moose as more territorial and aggressive during fall breeding season, typically in September. Parks Canada gives a broader mating-season range for bulls, from mid-September through the end of December. These are regional descriptions, not a universal calendar; do not assume a bull is safe because it is outside either period. The practical response remains the same year-round: give it room and do not try to approach or pass close.

Cows and calves

A bull-only encounter is not the only situation that calls for caution. Cows may be especially defensive when calves are nearby, and a lone calf should not be approached: its mother may be close even if you cannot see her. Utah DWR says calves are typically present in late May and early June in its area. That timing is location-specific, so give a cow and any calf plenty of room wherever you are hiking.

Do not treat a calf by itself as abandoned or harmless to approach. The possibility that its mother is nearby is reason to stop, keep your distance, and avoid moving between the calf and the cow. The same basic rule applies whether you can see one moose or more than one: do not try to get closer.

Dogs on the trail

Keep dogs leashed and under control. Dogs may provoke a moose because the animal can perceive them as predators; do not let a dog approach, chase, or harass it. If you see a moose, do not allow the dog to pull you closer. Your priority is to create distance without putting yourself or the dog between the moose and its escape route.

A dog’s presence does not make it safer to approach or try to drive the moose away. Keep the dog with you and under control while you withdraw, and do not let it run at the animal. Utah DWR says it typically receives a few reports of injuries to dogs and people each year, but does not provide a numerical count; that agency statement is not a measure of the odds of an attack on any particular trail.

Local guidance and reporting an aggressive encounter

There is no named, universal “safe distance” in official guidance. The figures are local recommendations: Kouchibouguac National Park recommends at least 30 m (100 ft), while Kenai Fjords National Park recommends at least 25 yards (25 m). Follow the current rules and signs in the park or jurisdiction you are visiting, and choose a wider berth when you can. A local distance recommendation is a minimum to follow, not a reason to approach up to that distance.

If a moose behaves aggressively in a developed area or inside a national park, contact the local wildlife authority or park staff. Parks Canada advises reporting aggressive encounters to park staff. Utah DWR also discusses reporting a moose in an urban setting. Use the relevant local agency’s current contact information; emergency arrangements differ by location.

How common is a dangerous encounter?

Utah DWR estimated Utah’s moose population at 2,500 to 3,000 in an article published May 27, 2026. That is a statewide population estimate, not a measure of the odds that a particular hiker will be attacked. The agency says it typically receives a few reports of injuries to dogs and people each year, but does not give a numerical count. Official encounter guidance does not establish a directly comparable injury rate or a probability of attack.

Those limits do not change what to do on the trail: keep your distance, do not force a close pass, and respond to warning behavior by increasing space and seeking cover. Utah DWR’s Once-In-A-Lifetime Species Coordinator Rusty Robinson put the basic principle this way: “Like with most wildlife, if you give moose plenty of space and don’t try to get too close, it will help keep you and them safe.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How far away should I stay from a moose?

Follow the local rules and signs. Parks Canada recommends at least 30 m (100 ft) at Kouchibouguac National Park, while Kenai Fjords National Park recommends at least 25 yards (25 m). These are park-specific recommendations, not a universal safe-distance threshold. Give the moose more room when you can, and do not squeeze past if you cannot keep the recommended distance.

Should I run if a moose is on the trail?

Not just because it is present. If it has noticed you, stay calm and slowly back away, ideally in the direction you came. If it charges or a charge seems imminent, move to substantial cover, such as a large tree or rock; a building or vehicle can help if immediately available.

What if the moose makes a short or bluff charge?

Treat it as a serious warning, not a test. Do not stand your ground to see whether it is a bluff. Increase distance and get behind substantial cover if you can.

What should I do if a moose knocks me down?

Curl up, protect your head and neck, and remain still until the moose retreats. NPS advises waiting until it has backed away to a safe distance before moving because it may renew an attack.

Are cows with calves dangerous too?

They can be defensive when calves are nearby. Do not approach a lone calf; its mother may be close even if you cannot see her. Give cows and calves plenty of room.

What should I do with my dog during a moose encounter?

Keep the dog leashed and under control. Dogs may provoke a moose because it can perceive them as predators, so do not let your dog approach, chase, or harass it. Create distance without putting yourself or the dog between the moose and its escape route.

Who should I contact after an aggressive encounter?

Contact park staff inside a national park or the local wildlife authority in a developed area. Reporting procedures and emergency contacts vary by location, so use the local agency’s current information.

The Bottom Line

Stop, give the moose room, and never force a close pass. If it has noticed you, back away calmly; if it charges, get behind solid cover. If knocked down, curl up and protect your head and neck until it retreats. Keep dogs controlled, and give cows and calves the same caution as bulls.
