Do not start, move, or drive the car while an animal might be under it or inside the engine compartment. Switch the engine off, set the parking brake, keep children and pets away, and move yourself to a safe position. An animal that is frightened, injured, sick, wild, or trapped can bite, scratch, or bolt into traffic when cornered.
From a distance, determine whether the animal is beside the car and free to leave, underneath it, or lodged beneath the hood. Give a free animal a quiet, unobstructed exit. If it is stuck, injured, acting strangely, aggressive, or creating an immediate hazard, call the appropriate local animal-control, wildlife, or emergency service. Policies differ by jurisdiction, so confirm who handles vehicle extractions rather than assuming an agency will respond.

First, make the car safe
- Park securely. If you are already driving, stop in a safe location away from traffic. Turn the ignition off, apply the parking brake, and keep the keys with you.
- Do not restart or move the vehicle. Cats and other animals may shelter in a warm engine or beneath a car. St. Louis Animal Care and Control warns that starting the vehicle can seriously injure or kill a cat in the engine compartment. The same risk applies if you drive over an animal under the vehicle or cause it to fall into moving parts.
- Keep people and pets back. Put children and dogs indoors or behind a closed door. Do not let anyone crawl under the car, reach through the wheel well, or open hot or moving components.
- Use a safe vantage point. Observe from several steps away, behind a barrier if possible. Do not kneel beside an unknown animal or place your face and hands near the hood, wheel wells, exhaust, or undercarriage.
Do not use the horn, rev the engine, pour water on the animal, throw objects, or hit the bodywork. Sudden noise can drive an animal into traffic or deeper into the vehicle.

If the animal is free beside the car
Give it a route, not a chase
An apparently healthy stray may be resting in shade, investigating a smell, or waiting for people to leave. Stand still and increase the distance between yourself and the animal. If the car is parked near a road, place yourself where you can discourage people from walking toward it without blocking the animal’s escape.
Open space toward a quiet verge or building is preferable to an opening toward traffic. Do not form a semicircle of helpers around the animal. A crowd removes its choices and can trigger a defensive attack.
Do not touch or feed an unknown animal
CDC wildlife guidance says to keep your distance, avoid touching and feeding wildlife, and contact animal control when a wild animal behaves strangely. Food may make an animal remain near the car, approach people, or defend the food. Gloves, blankets, and improvised leashes do not make handling a wild or unidentified animal safe.
If the animal appears to be a domestic pet, you can report its location to local animal control or a shelter once you are at a safe distance. Do not attempt to read a tag, check its mouth, or pick it up unless trained personnel direct you and the animal is voluntarily calm and contained.

Recognize abnormal behavior
Call for professional advice if the animal is staggering, circling, unusually tame or aggressive, unable to stand, vocalizing continuously, bleeding, breathing with difficulty, or showing other signs of severe illness. These signs do not identify a particular disease, but they make close approach unsafe. Keep people and pets away until responders arrive.
If the animal is under the hood or beneath the car
Why starting the car is dangerous
Animals seek warmth in parked vehicles, especially in cold weather. The City of St. Louis Department of Health warns that a cat in a warm engine can be seriously injured or killed when the vehicle starts. A quick look through the windshield is not enough: an animal can be behind a splash shield, above a wheel, or on top of engine components and remain invisible from outside.
Leave the hood closed if opening it would put your hands near the animal or hot parts. If the hood is already open, do not reach into belts, fans, pulleys, wiring, or narrow gaps. Never start the engine to make an animal leave.
Observe without crowding
From a safe angle, note where the animal is, whether it can move on its own, and whether any route out is open. Use a flashlight from several feet away if needed; do not shine it directly into the animal’s eyes or insert it into a gap. Ask bystanders to keep quiet and clear.

A narrow exception for an uninjured, visible cat
Miami-Dade Animal Services’ call-taker guidance describes gently encouraging an apparently uninjured cat out of an engine compartment with a broom handle or similar item. This is a local example for a specific case, not a general instruction for unidentified animals. Do not poke, strike, pull, spray, or force an animal. Stop immediately if the cat hisses, lunges, becomes wedged, or would require you to place a hand or arm into the machinery.
Do not use this approach for wildlife, an injured animal, a sick-looking animal, a dog, a raccoon, a skunk, a snake, or any species you cannot identify confidently. A frightened animal can redirect its bite or claws toward the person holding the tool.
When and whom to call
Immediate danger, attack, or serious injury
Call emergency services when a person is being attacked, the animal is in an active roadway, a crash or fire risk exists, or someone has suffered a serious bite or other injury. Move people to safety first. Do not try to restrain the animal while waiting.

Sick, injured, or abnormal wildlife
CDC guidance directs people to animal control for strangely behaving wildlife and to a wildlife rehabilitator or state wildlife office for badly injured or very sick wildlife. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission visitor guidance likewise says to give wildlife space and let professionals care for sick, injured, or orphaned animals. Those agencies are examples of the type of authority to contact; the correct office depends on your location and the species involved.
An animal lodged but not visibly injured
Call local animal control and describe the exact location: “under the hood,” “behind the front wheel,” or “beneath the vehicle.” Ask whether the agency removes animals from vehicles, which species it handles, whether it operates after hours, and what you should do until help arrives.
Do not assume animal control is required to remove every animal from every car. Miami-Dade’s published call-taker information says its Animal Services will not respond to an uninjured cat in a car engine and advises contacting a private company if gentle coaxing fails. That is a Miami-Dade policy example, not a nationwide rule. If your agency cannot assist, ask for the appropriate qualified vehicle-removal or animal-rescue service rather than dismantling the car yourself.

- Give your exact location. Include the street, parking area, nearest landmark, and whether the vehicle is blocking traffic.
- Describe the animal without approaching. State the likely species only if you are confident, its approximate size and color, and whether it is wild, domestic-looking, injured, or behaving abnormally.
- Explain where it is lodged. Say whether you can see it under the hood, beneath the car, inside the cabin, or only hear movement.
- Report hazards. Mention traffic, a hot engine, leaking fluids, a bite, aggressive behavior, or children and pets nearby.
- Follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Ask what distance to keep and whether the vehicle must remain untouched until a responder or technician arrives.
Seattle’s animal-control service information illustrates a common municipal approach: direct reports for sick or injured animals and threats to public safety. Your local procedure, jurisdiction, and hours may differ, so use the city or county service that covers the vehicle’s location.

What not to do
- Do not start, move, or drive the vehicle to “flush out” an animal.
- Do not reach under the car or into the engine bay with bare hands.
- Do not corner, chase, grab, net, or restrain an unknown animal.
- Do not feed it, even if it looks hungry; food can increase risk and delay departure.
- Do not pour water, use chemicals, set traps, or strike the vehicle.
- Do not let children or pets approach for a closer look.
- Do not remove belts, covers, wheel liners, or other vehicle parts unless a qualified professional is doing the work.
- Do not assume a quiet animal is harmless. Fear, pain, and illness can produce a sudden defensive response.
After the animal leaves
Wait until it has moved well away from the vehicle and people. From a safe position, look around the tires and under the car and listen for movement. Do not put your hands into gaps or restart immediately if you still hear scratching or see fur, a tail, or movement near the engine.
If there is any reason to think the animal remains inside the vehicle structure, have a qualified mechanic or animal-removal professional inspect it. An animal can move from an engine bay into a shielded area, and pulling parts apart can injure both you and the animal. Once a professional confirms the vehicle is clear, check for damaged wiring, hoses, insulation, or fluid leaks before driving.
A separate emergency: an animal trapped inside a hot cabin
An animal locked inside a parked vehicle is a different emergency from a stray outside or under the hood. Heat can become dangerous rapidly, even when the weather does not feel extreme. Call emergency services or the relevant local authority, give the vehicle’s exact location and license plate, and follow their instructions. Do not break a window or enter the vehicle unless emergency responders or local law clearly authorize that action and there is an immediate life-threatening danger.
Decision guide
| Question | Action |
|---|---|
| Could the animal be under the hood or car? | Keep the engine off and do not move the vehicle. |
| Can it leave freely and does it look normal? | Back away, remove people and pets, and provide a quiet route. |
| Is it injured, very sick, aggressive, or behaving strangely? | Keep your distance and contact animal control, wildlife authorities, or emergency services as appropriate. |
| Is it still lodged after safe, gentle coaxing of an uninjured visible cat? | Stop trying to remove it and ask local authorities for an extraction policy or a qualified professional. |
| Has it left but you hear or see signs inside the vehicle? | Do not drive; arrange a professional inspection. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will animal control automatically remove a cat from my car engine?
No. Response policies are local. Miami-Dade’s guidance says its Animal Services does not respond to an uninjured cat in a car engine, while other jurisdictions may handle such calls. Ask the agency serving your location who performs vehicle extractions.
Can I leave food near the car to make the animal come out?
It is safer not to feed an unidentified animal. Food can keep it near the vehicle, attract other animals, and encourage a defensive response. Keep the area quiet and contact the appropriate authority if it remains.
What if I am not sure whether the animal is still under the hood?
Treat the vehicle as occupied: leave the engine off, keep everyone away, and have animal control or a qualified professional assess it. Do not reach into the engine bay or drive to test the assumption.
