Move people and pets away, get behind a secure barrier, warn others without gathering a crowd, and call your local forest or wildlife authority. Do not approach, follow, surround, photograph at close range, throw objects at, or try to chase the tiger. If someone faces an immediate threat to life, contact your local emergency service as well as wildlife officials.

The correct operational response depends on your jurisdiction and on facts such as whether the tiger is still present, how far it is from forest, whether people are blocking its route, and whether anyone has been injured. Residents should report those facts; trained responders decide whether to monitor, manage a crowd, clear an escape route, or intervene.

What to do in the first few minutes

  1. Create distance. Move indoors or to another secure place only if you can do so without walking toward the tiger. Close doors and windows that open directly toward the animal. If you are already outside and a safe building or vehicle is nearby, enter it calmly.
  2. Keep people and pets away. Bring children, dogs, cats, livestock and other domestic animals inside or behind a secure barrier. Do not send anyone out to confirm the report.
  3. Warn nearby residents without creating a crowd. Use phone calls or messages from a safe location. Do not organize a viewing group, form a line around the animal, or stand along a road to watch it.
  4. Call the local forest or wildlife department promptly. Use your district, state, provincial or national wildlife authority’s current contact. If a person is being attacked or faces an immediate life-threatening situation, call the local emergency service too.
  5. Give dispatchers usable facts. State the exact location or nearest landmark, time of sighting, direction of travel, whether the tiger is still visible, whether people or animals are in danger, and whether anyone is injured. Share a photograph only if it was taken safely from your original position; never move closer to obtain one.
  6. Follow official instructions and stay put. Officials may ask residents to remain indoors, keep a road clear, or avoid a particular area. Do not search for the tiger after it disappears.

This conservative sequence reflects the common point in official guidance from India, Bangladesh and Nepal: distance, controlled movement and prompt reporting are safer than amateur intervention.

Why crowds and pursuit make the situation harder

A tiger surrounded by people has fewer ways to leave and more reasons to react defensively. Bangladesh Forest Department guidance specifically calls for keeping crowds well away. A crowd can block the animal’s route, prevent trained teams from assessing the scene and create sudden movement or noise that residents cannot control.

Chasing, shouting, throwing stones, using vehicles to corner the tiger or following tracks turns a sighting into an active confrontation. It also exposes people who were not initially at risk. The fact that a tiger is near a settlement does not give residents a role in driving it toward forest. Whether guiding an animal is appropriate depends on its exact location, the available escape route and human presence between the tiger and forest. Those decisions belong to trained responders.

Who to call when a tiger is in your village or neighborhood

Use the authority for the place where the tiger is now

There is no universal household hotline. Contact the local forest department, wildlife department, protected-area office or other authority designated by your jurisdiction. Phone numbers and escalation procedures differ by country, state and district and can change, so use a current government contact rather than an old number circulated in a message group.

Example: Telangana, India

Telangana’s Forest Department lists 7396812200 for its tiger monitoring cell. The number covers tiger and other mega-fauna incidents, including straying, livestock predation and wildlife emergencies across Telangana. It is a state-specific contact, not a national number. Outside Telangana, call the relevant local authority.

What to report

  • Exact location, including a village, street, farm, gate, trail or landmark.
  • Time of the sighting and the direction in which the tiger moved.
  • Whether it is visible now, contained in an enclosed area, crossing a road or near houses.
  • How many people, children, pets or livestock are nearby.
  • Any injury, attack, livestock predation or damaged barrier.
  • Your safe callback number and whether you can remain indoors.

Do not try to classify the tiger, estimate its age or decide whether it is a “problem” animal. Clear observations help officials; speculation can mislead them.

If the tiger is still visible versus already gone

A sighting alone does not determine the management response. Official guidance distinguishes a tiger that has been seen but is no longer present from repeated or more serious incidents. Report either situation, then let authorities determine the next step.

Situation Resident action What officials may consider
Tiger currently visible near homes Remain behind a secure barrier, keep everyone away, report immediately and preserve a clear area for responders without approaching the animal. Current location, distance from forest, crowd size, escape routes, nearby people or animals and whether intervention is safe.
Tiger seen but no longer visible Report the time, last location and direction. Keep children, pets and livestock away; do not track or search. Monitoring, camera or field checks, recent reports and whether the animal may still be in the wider area.
Repeated sightings or livestock losses Make each report separately and include dates, locations and any evidence obtained from a safe place. Pattern of incidents, identification of the animal, risk to people and a tailored management plan.
Injury or immediate attack Call the local emergency service and wildlife authority. Do not return to the scene or attempt a rescue that puts additional people in danger. Emergency medical response, scene security, evidence collection and wildlife action under local law.

Should you try to guide the tiger back toward forest?

Not on your own. Bangladesh Forest Department guidance describes a trained response that may guide a tiger toward forest when the animal is in a village near forest, the route is usable and the crowd is kept away. The same guidance warns that this approach becomes dangerous when the tiger is far from forest or people are between the tiger and forest.

Those conditions are difficult for an untrained observer to judge. A road, river, wall, crop field or cluster of houses can change the risk within minutes. Residents should therefore keep the route open by staying out of it, not by entering the area to push the tiger along. Officials may instead monitor, manage access, identify the animal or use another authorized procedure.

Protecting children, pets and livestock

Children

Bring children indoors before attempting to pass on warnings. Tell them not to look for the tiger, approach a crowd, stand on a roof or leave with friends to take pictures. Adults should not use children as messengers.

Dogs and cats

Keep pets inside or in a fully secured enclosure. Do not release a dog to bark at the tiger or send someone outside to retrieve an animal while the tiger may be nearby. A pet moving through vegetation can draw people into the same danger area.

Livestock and other domestic animals

If livestock are outside, tell officials where they are and whether moving them would require approaching the tiger. Do not form a rescue group. Wildlife authorities can advise when and how access is safe.

How official guidance differs by jurisdiction

The shared principles are broadly conservative, but the detailed procedures below are not interchangeable.

India: National Tiger Conservation Authority

The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has a Standard Operating Procedure for emergencies caused by tigers straying into human-dominated landscapes. It covers government arrangements such as monitoring committees, evidence collection, identifying the animal, immobilization procedures and proactive measures. It is response guidance for authorities, not permission for residents to handle or capture a tiger.

Bangladesh: forest-edge and village incidents

Bangladesh Forest Department material maps responses by incident type. It distinguishes a past sighting from repeated or more serious incidents and considers whether the animal is near forest, whether people are blocking its route and whether a trained team can work safely. Residents should provide those facts and maintain distance while officials choose the response.

Nepal: worksite safety in parks and buffer areas

A Nepal Department of Roads safety plan dated February 2022 addresses construction and maintenance workers in national parks and buffer areas. It tells workers to avoid approaching an escaped tiger and to evacuate the surrounding work area in a group. It lists a watchman’s whistle and light as worksite provisions. These instructions are context-specific; they are not a general household protocol or a reason to approach a tiger with a whistle.

Optional preparedness before an incident

A household can prepare contact information and a communication plan without buying specialized equipment. Save the local forest or wildlife authority and emergency-service numbers in several phones, identify rooms or buildings that can be secured quickly, and agree that one adult will make the call while others bring children and pets inside.

A whistle can be a signaling or alerting aid in settings where local safety plans use one, but it does not deter tigers. Never go outside or toward the animal to use it. A charged phone, a flashlight for moving between safe indoor areas and a written list of local contacts are more useful for reporting and coordination.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Mistake Why it is unsafe Safer alternative
Going outside to photograph or livestream It adds people to the scene and may block the tiger’s escape route. Stay where you are and report an observation already made safely.
Gathering neighbors to watch A crowd can surround the animal and hinder responders. Send a short warning to nearby households and ask them to stay indoors.
Chasing with vehicles, lights or firecrackers It is amateur hazing and can provoke unpredictable movement. Keep roads and likely escape routes clear for officials.
Searching after the tiger disappears A hidden animal may still be nearby, and searchers lack trained tracking and containment. Report the last known location and wait for official instructions.
Assuming one country’s number or procedure applies elsewhere Wildlife administration and emergency contacts are jurisdiction-specific. Use the current authority for your own district, state or country.

Questions officials may ask

Prepare concise answers rather than opinions: Where exactly was the tiger? When was it last seen? Which way did it go? Was it walking, resting, feeding or entering a structure? How many people are nearby? Are any pets or livestock loose? Is anyone injured? These details help responders compare the incident with other reports and decide whether monitoring or active management is appropriate.

Do not exaggerate a sighting to obtain a faster response, and do not dismiss it because the animal has vanished from view. A reliable report of a past sighting is still useful for monitoring.

What not to infer from a neighborhood sighting

There is no verified universal percentage for the chance of an attack after a neighborhood sighting in the official material considered here. A sighting does not by itself establish that an attack will occur, that the tiger is trapped, or that it has left the area. Those conclusions require local assessment of the animal, people, terrain and incident history.

Until officials provide different instructions, treat the area around the last sighting as off-limits, keep domestic animals secured and avoid nighttime searches. The safest public contribution is accurate information, distance and a calm, unobstructed scene for trained responders.
