What to Do If You Find a Wasp Spider in Your Home

A possible wasp spider indoors is usually a reason to give it space, not panic. Learn how to identify it cautiously and move it outside without direct contact.

If you find a spider that might be a wasp spider, keep children and pets from touching it and don’t handle it with bare hands. If it isn’t causing a problem, you can leave it alone. If you want it outside, a glass and stiff card can help you move it without direct contact. That method is general advice for unwanted spiders, not a wasp-spider-specific protocol.

What should you do first?

  1. Give it space. Keep children and pets from touching the spider while you decide what to do. This is a sensible precaution, not evidence that a wasp spider poses a serious risk.
  2. Decide whether it needs moving. If it is outside or tucked away and not in anyone’s path, leaving it undisturbed is reasonable. The species is associated with grassland and webs among long grass, rather than being described as a household pest.
  3. Don’t assume the identification. If its appearance or location does not fit, avoid handling it and take a clear photo from a safe distance. Ask a local wildlife or arachnology group to help identify it.

Is a wasp spider dangerous?

The British Arachnological Society describes the wasp spider as “quite harmless and highly unlikely that it will hurt you.” That is a source-qualified assessment, not a guarantee that a bite is impossible. Avoid bare-handed handling, particularly if you are not certain what species you have found.

If someone is bitten and becomes unwell, seek locally appropriate medical advice rather than relying on an online identification. The available species information does not establish a wasp-spider-specific treatment or emergency protocol.

How can you get a wasp spider out of the house?

The Wildlife Trusts’ general advice for an unwanted house spider is to use a glass and card. It is not a species-specific method, but it allows you to move a spider without touching it directly.

  3. Keep the card against the glass as you lift and carry the spider outside.
  4. Set the glass down outdoors and lift it away, letting the spider leave.

If you prefer a reusable tool, a spider catcher is optional; a glass and card are enough for this general capture-and-release approach.

How can you tell whether it is a wasp spider?

“Wasp spider” here refers to Argiope bruennichi. The female has bold yellow, black, and white markings; the much smaller male is pale brown, so a spider that lacks the familiar stripes is not automatically a different species. Colour alone is not a reliable basis for identifying an uncertain specimen.

  • The British Arachnological Society gives the female’s body length as up to 2 cm and the male’s as about 0.5 cm.
  • The Wildlife Trusts gives a body-length range of 0.5–1.8 cm.
  • The Society describes large orb webs among open, long grass, sometimes with a vertical band of iridescent silk at the web’s hub.

Those size figures come from different publishers and should not be treated as one exact measurement. A photo taken from a safe distance can help a local expert assess an uncertain identification.

Does finding one indoors mean there is a nest or infestation?

No such conclusion follows from a single indoor sighting. The species descriptions place its webs and egg sacs outdoors in grass; they do not establish that an indoor wasp spider has made a nest in the home or that more spiders are present.

Where are wasp spiders found, and when might you see them?

The distribution information available here is UK-specific. The British Arachnological Society and The Wildlife Trusts describe the species as established in southern England and spreading north. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust also discussed northward spread as suitable habitat becomes available in an article published 21 September 2026. These UK accounts do not establish where the species occurs elsewhere.

The Wildlife Trusts list grassland, heathland, farmland, coastal areas, woodland, towns, and gardens among its habitats, and give April–October as the viewing period. The British Arachnological Society says adults mature in August and September; it also reports that a female’s web can measure 30 cm across. The season and measurements are source-specific descriptions, not guarantees about what you will see at a particular home or time.
