If you hit an elk, protect yourself and your passengers first: switch on your hazard lights, move the vehicle out of traffic if you can do so safely, and check for injuries. Call emergency services for injuries, immediate danger, a blocked road, or an elk that may still be alive. Keep away from the animal and let local authorities handle it. Reporting, carcass removal, and whether anyone may keep the meat depend on local rules.
What to do immediately after hitting an elk
Take these steps in order, adapting them to the traffic and hazards around you. Do not put yourself or passengers in danger to inspect the elk, take pictures, or retrieve belongings.

1. Stop somewhere safe and warn other drivers
If the vehicle can be driven safely, move it out of an active lane to a safe place and turn on the hazard lights. Michigan State Police advises drivers to remain buckled while moving to the shoulder if possible. If the vehicle is disabled in a traffic lane and staying inside would leave you in immediate danger, exit carefully and stand well away from oncoming traffic.

If you cannot reach a safe place without increasing the danger, stay where you are as safely as possible and call emergency services. Tell the dispatcher your location, that an elk collision has occurred, whether anyone is injured, and whether the vehicle or animal is obstructing traffic.

Be specific about the hazard when you call. Say whether the car is in a travel lane, whether it can be moved, and whether the elk is alive or appears to be injured. Those details help responders distinguish a medical emergency from an animal or roadway hazard. If you do not know the exact address, give the road name and direction of travel and describe your location as clearly as you can.
2. Check occupants for injuries
Once you are in a safer position, check yourself and passengers. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or may need urgent medical attention. Do not delay that call to assess damage, contact an insurer, or investigate the animal. If nobody appears injured, continue to assess whether the vehicle or elk presents an immediate hazard to other road users.
Do not assume that the absence of obvious injury means there is no urgent problem: a vehicle stopped in a lane or an animal in the roadway can endanger other drivers. Report those hazards even if everyone in your car seems unhurt. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions about whether to remain in the vehicle or move to a safer place.

3. Keep away from the elk
Do not approach, touch, or attempt to move an elk that is alive, injured, or apparently dead. A struck animal may still be alive, and an injured animal can behave unpredictably. Indiana Department of Natural Resources warns about this risk for deer; keep the same cautious distance around an elk and ask local police or wildlife authorities to respond.
Do not try to dispatch an injured elk yourself. The safe and lawful response can depend on local rules, and Oregon’s specific process for an animal that is humanely dispatched is not a general instruction for other places.
Keep passengers, including children, away from the animal as well. Do not approach it to judge the severity of its injuries, check whether it is breathing, or take a closer photograph. Tell authorities what you observed from a safe distance and let trained responders decide how to handle it.
4. Report an urgent hazard
Call emergency services for injuries, immediate danger, a blocked roadway, or another urgent hazard. If the elk is alive or injured, contact the locally designated police, wildlife, or conservation authority. If the collision has left a carcass or vehicle obstructing traffic, report it through the local channel responsible for that hazard. The right agency and reporting process differ by jurisdiction.

There may be more than one reporting task: an urgent call about an injured animal or blocked road is not necessarily the same as a required crash report or a report to a wildlife agency. Ask the responding officer or dispatcher whether any additional notification is needed. Do not delay the urgent call while trying to identify the correct non-emergency office.
5. Document the incident only when safe
After help has been contacted and you can do so without entering traffic or approaching the animal, take photographs of vehicle damage and the scene if practical. Michigan State Police recommends documenting the incident after help arrives. Do not let documentation delay assistance or put you near the elk.
If taking a picture would require standing near traffic, walking toward the animal, or leaving a safer position, skip it. The photographs are secondary to getting help and reporting the hazard. Once it is safe, keep a record of the damage and any injuries to share with your insurer.
Should you call 911 or another authority?
Use the emergency number in your location when someone is injured, there is immediate danger, traffic is blocked, or another urgent hazard requires a fast response. For a wounded elk, contact the local police or wildlife authority designated to handle injured animals. If there is no immediate emergency, follow local instructions for reporting a wildlife collision, roadway carcass, or vehicle damage.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not assume that one state’s crash-reporting threshold applies everywhere. For example, Wildlife Illinois gives reporting guidance for Illinois circumstances, including a $1,500 property-damage threshold. That figure is not a national rule; reporting requirements and the agencies involved vary. If you are uncertain which agency to contact, local police or emergency dispatch can direct you.
Some jurisdictions separate these reports. Government of British Columbia guidance, last updated December 9, 2025, distinguishes reporting an injured animal to the Conservation Officer Service from reporting a highway carcass or vehicle damage. That is a useful example of why it helps to describe each problem clearly when you call rather than assuming one report handles all of them.
When there is no immediate emergency, use the appropriate local non-emergency or agency reporting route. The relevant contact can depend on whether the animal is injured, whether a carcass is on a public highway, and whether the vehicle itself has been damaged. If you are unsure, explain the situation to local police and ask which agency needs to be notified.

What if the elk is alive or badly injured?
Stay well back and tell the dispatcher or local authority that the elk may be alive and injured. Do not approach to determine how badly it is hurt, try to restrain it, or move it out of the road yourself. Keep passengers away too. If it is creating an immediate traffic hazard, explain that when you call so responders know the road is obstructed.

Indiana DNR warns that a deer struck by a vehicle may survive a direct collision or appear dead while still alive. Its advice concerns deer, but the practical choice after striking an elk is the same: do not go close to check; ask authorities to assess the animal.
Oregon has a specific procedure for a driver seeking to salvage meat from an injured deer or elk that is humanely dispatched: the driver must first call Oregon State Police or local law enforcement, and Oregon law requires immediate notification. This is an Oregon-specific rule, not permission or a procedure to follow elsewhere. Unless local authorities give you instructions, leave the animal alone.
Do not treat the Oregon procedure as a reason to handle an injured elk. It is a location-specific process, and other jurisdictions may have different rules. If you are outside Oregon, ask local law enforcement or wildlife officials what they require; until they provide instructions, keep away and do not try to dispatch, move, or salvage the animal.
Can you move the elk or keep the meat?
Do not assume you may move or keep a carcass. If it is a road hazard, report it and let the responsible authority arrange removal. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says, for Oregon, “If you hit a large animal or see one on the road, move it to the side of the road if it is safe to do so.” The agency also says to call 911 if it cannot be moved safely. Oregon assigns removal of animals from public roadways to road maintenance crews. These are Oregon instructions; do not treat them as universal permission to handle an elk.
Other jurisdictions can have different rules. Oregon has a permit and notification process for specified roadkill salvage. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says a deer struck on a highway cannot be tagged and taken. These examples do not establish the rule for every state or province, and the Texas statement concerns deer. Check with the local wildlife agency or law enforcement before touching, transporting, or keeping any elk carcass.
Safety comes before salvage. Even where a local rule permits some form of carcass recovery, do not approach an animal that may still be alive or stand in traffic to move a carcass. Follow instructions from responding officers or wildlife staff.

Before making any decision about meat, confirm whether local rules require advance notification, a permit, or another process. Do not assume that permission to report a collision means permission to take the animal. A carcass may also remain a roadway hazard, so report its location rather than trying to remove it yourself unless local instructions allow it and it is safe to do so.
Who removes an elk from the road?
Removal responsibility depends on the location and the road. In Oregon, the wildlife agency says road maintenance crews remove animals from public roadways. In other places, police, transportation or road-maintenance crews, or wildlife officials may have different roles. Report the obstruction and ask the local authority what to do; do not infer that an Oregon procedure applies where you are.

If a carcass is on a public road, do not pull it into traffic or put yourself at risk trying to clear it. If it is safe to remain in your vehicle away from traffic, do so while waiting for instructions. If the vehicle itself cannot be driven or moved safely, tell dispatch and request the appropriate assistance.
The animal and the vehicle can require separate responses. For example, an injured elk may need a wildlife or conservation officer, while a carcass on a public road may be handled by road maintenance. Describe both issues when reporting the collision, and ask whether the relevant agencies have been notified.

Once people are safe and the urgent hazard has been reported, document vehicle damage and injuries if practical. Photograph the vehicle and scene only from a safe location. Then notify your insurer and ask what information it needs to assess the damage. British Columbia’s highway guidance advises reporting vehicle damage to the insurer.
Whether a policy covers the damage, and how a claim is handled, depends on the policy and the collision circumstances. Do not assume coverage or a particular claim result from the fact that an elk was involved. If the vehicle is not drivable or cannot be moved safely, ask local authorities what roadside or towing assistance is appropriate; do not attempt to drive a damaged vehicle if it would be unsafe.

Contact the insurer after the immediate safety and reporting issues are under control. It can tell you what documentation it needs and how to proceed with a claim. A photograph may help document damage, but do not risk your safety to get one. If the car cannot be driven or moved safely, a tow or roadside-assistance service may be appropriate; use one only after the scene and immediate hazard have been addressed.

Local rules to confirm after the immediate danger passes
There is no single reporting or carcass-handling rule established for all locations. The appropriate process can differ based on where the collision happened, whether someone is injured, whether the elk is alive, whether the vehicle can be moved, and whether the animal is blocking traffic. Check the local police and wildlife-agency instructions for:
- Which agency handles an injured elk or a carcass on that road.
- Whether the collision must be reported and what information is required.
- Whether a permit or notification is required before any carcass salvage.
- Whether road maintenance crews or another authority remove animals from public roads.
- Whether a separate report is needed for vehicle damage or a roadway obstruction.
British Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, and Texas guidance illustrates jurisdictional differences; none of those examples substitutes for the rules where your collision occurred.
