If your dog may have swallowed any part of a shoe, call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic now. Tell them what is missing, how much may be gone, when the chewing occurred, your dog’s approximate weight, and whether any symptoms are present. A shoe fragment can act as a gastrointestinal foreign body, and the correct response depends on the object, the dog and its condition.
If your dog is choking, struggling to breathe or has material lodged deep in the throat, treat it as an emergency and leave for veterinary care. Do not induce vomiting, give a home antidote or blindly reach into the throat unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Move the remaining shoe pieces away. Keep your dog from swallowing more and save the shoe, loose fragments and any product container that may identify polish, adhesive, cleaner or another treatment.
- Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic. Explain which part is missing—such as a sole, insole, lace or trim—and give your best estimate of the amount and material. Do not wait for symptoms before making the call.
- Record the timing. Note when the chewing happened and when you first noticed the missing piece. If the event may have happened earlier, say so rather than guessing that it was recent.
- Describe your dog’s condition. Mention vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, breathing trouble, repeated swallowing, gagging or any other change. Also provide the dog’s approximate weight and relevant medical history if known.
- Follow the clinic’s instructions. The veterinarian may tell you to come in immediately, contact an animal poison-control service, or take another specific step based on the object and your dog’s signs.
Do not try to make the dog vomit on your own. A professional must decide whether vomiting is safe; an object can injure the throat on the way back up or become lodged. Home “antidotes” can also create additional risks and delay appropriate treatment.

Choking or a lodged object
Breathing difficulty, blue or gray gums, collapse, severe gagging or an object visibly stuck in the mouth or throat requires immediate veterinary attention. Do not perform a blind finger sweep. Reaching into the throat can push material farther down or cause a bite. If an object is deep in the throat, the clinic has the equipment and training to remove it safely.

Signs that may indicate a gastrointestinal obstruction
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration and lethargy among possible signs of an obstruction. A dog may show only some of these signs, and the pattern can vary with the obstruction’s location, severity and duration. Their absence does not prove that the shoe fragment is safe to leave in place.
Repeated vomiting, worsening weakness, a painful or tense abdomen, inability to keep water down, or rapid deterioration should be reported to the clinic immediately while you arrange transport. Do not offer food, oil, laxatives or other remedies unless the veterinarian tells you to.
Why a swallowed shoe piece can be dangerous
Shoe material is not automatically an emergency, but it can become one. Cornell defines a gastrointestinal obstruction as a non-digestible object that is too large to move from the stomach or small intestine and becomes lodged. A blockage can stop normal movement of food and waste and can damage the digestive tract. Cornell describes these obstructions as emergencies that often require surgical removal, with prompt veterinary intervention important to the best possible outcome.

The risk depends on the individual situation: what material was swallowed, how much is missing, the object’s size and shape, where it is located, whether it is moving, and whether the intestine or stomach has been injured. A small fragment may not behave like a whole insole or a long strip of material. Owners cannot determine the object’s location reliably at home, which is why a prompt call is appropriate even when the dog initially appears normal.

Do not rely on a presumed “safe” passage time or a size rule. No shoe-specific passing-time estimate or size threshold is established here, and giving one could encourage dangerous delay.
Information to gather before you speak with the veterinarian
Clear details help the clinic triage the case and decide what examination or testing is needed. Have these points ready:
- Object description: the missing component, approximate dimensions if you can measure a matching piece, material and whether it has sharp edges, strings, metal hardware or layered construction.
- Amount: whether one fragment, several pieces or an unknown quantity may be gone.
- Timing: when the chewing was witnessed or when the shoe was last seen intact.
- Dog details: approximate weight, age, breed or body size, medical conditions and current medications.
- Current signs: vomiting, appetite change, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, lethargy, dehydration, gagging, coughing or breathing changes.
- Chemical information: the product name or ingredient list for polish, adhesive, cleaner, waterproofing treatment or another substance that may have been on the shoe.
If you are traveling to the clinic, take the remaining shoe and its packaging rather than relying on a verbal description. A photograph of the shoe before and after chewing can also help show what is missing, but it should not delay the call or departure.
What not to do at home
Do not induce vomiting without professional direction
The Pet Poison Helpline and PetMD both warn against inducing vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional has advised it. Vomiting may be unsafe when the material is sharp, large, abrasive or already lodged. It can also expose the esophagus to an irritating chemical from the shoe.

Do not give home antidotes
Do not give milk, oil, salt, hydrogen peroxide, laxatives, charcoal or another household remedy unless a professional gives exact instructions for your dog and exposure. These measures are not a substitute for assessment and may complicate treatment.
Do not pull on material you cannot safely see
If a strip, lace or other piece is deep in the throat, pulling can tear tissue or leave part of the object behind. Keep the dog as calm and still as possible and let the emergency team handle removal.
How a veterinarian may investigate the problem
History and physical examination
The veterinarian will ask what was swallowed, how much may be missing, when it happened and what signs have developed. During the examination, they may assess the mouth and throat, hydration, abdominal pain, temperature, heart rate and overall stability.
Imaging and laboratory tests
Cornell reports that abdominal X-rays or ultrasound may help identify an obstruction. Some materials are easier to see than others, and imaging is not always definitive. Blood work may be recommended to evaluate dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, infection and other conditions that can accompany vomiting or intestinal disease.

If clinical suspicion remains high despite inconclusive images, the veterinarian may recommend further investigation, including exploratory surgery. A normal-looking early examination does not guarantee that an object will pass safely, so follow-up advice should come from the treating clinic.
Possible treatment paths
There is no single treatment plan for a swallowed shoe. The veterinarian chooses among options based on location, size and amount of material, evidence of obstruction or tissue injury, symptoms, examination findings and imaging.
| Situation the veterinarian identifies | Possible management | What the owner should understand |
|---|---|---|
| Object accessible in the stomach and suitable for retrieval | Endoscopic retrieval may be considered. | This is a clinician-performed procedure; do not attempt to make the object move at home. |
| Small object without complete obstruction in a stable dog | Hospitalization, fluids and monitoring may be considered in selected cases. | “Monitoring” is a veterinary plan with defined reassessment, not an owner-created waiting schedule. |
| Confirmed or strongly suspected obstruction | Surgery is often required. | Prompt treatment matters because pressure and impaired blood flow can damage the intestine. |
| Damaged or perforated intestine | The affected section may need to be removed during surgery. | The extent of injury can be determined only by the veterinary team. |
Cornell’s guidance summarizes the stakes: “GI obstructions are emergencies often requiring surgical removal, and prompt veterinary intervention is critical to achieving the best outcome for your dog.” The guidance page was updated in December 2024.
If the shoe had polish, adhesive or another chemical
Physical obstruction and chemical exposure are separate concerns. A dog may swallow shoe material and also lick or ingest polish, glue, cleaner, waterproofing treatment or another applied product. The toxicity of a specific formulation cannot be assumed from the word “shoe polish” or from the product’s color or smell.

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly if any product may have been swallowed. Have the brand or product name, ingredient list, estimated amount, time of exposure and your dog’s approximate weight available. Keep the container or a clear photograph of its label. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote while you are gathering this information unless the professional you contacted instructs you to do so.
U.S. poison-control contacts
The Pet Poison Helpline lists 24/7 assistance at 855-764-7661 and advises against inducing vomiting or giving home antidotes without professional consultation. ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists 888-426-4435 and states that it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; its page says a consultation fee may apply. Verify contact details and fees when you call. These are U.S. services—elsewhere, use your local emergency veterinarian or animal poison service.
Preventing another shoe incident
Remove access
Store shoes in a closed cabinet or lidded bin that your dog cannot open. Keep pairs off floors, stairs, entryway benches and open closets, and put damaged shoes directly into a closed trash container. Storage prevents both the physical foreign-body risk and exposure to any treatment product on the shoe.

Pay particular attention during puppyhood, teething, periods of boredom and any time your dog has recently started scavenging. Supervise play with chew items and remove pieces that begin to break apart. Do not leave a dog alone with an object that can be torn into swallowable fragments.
Train a reliable trade and leave-it response
Use reward-based practice to teach your dog to move away from an item and exchange it for an approved toy or treat. Avoid chasing, yelling or forcibly pulling objects from the mouth, which can encourage gulping or guarding. A qualified trainer who works on scavenging prevention can help tailor the plan to your dog.
Review the environment
Look for other small, chewable objects within reach, including laces, children’s toys, packaging and household debris. Cornell recommends keeping such objects inaccessible, supervising play and training dogs not to scavenge. Prevention works best as a routine rather than a response after an ingestion.
A simple decision path
- Is your dog choking, struggling to breathe, collapsing or showing a deeply lodged object? Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately; do not perform a blind finger sweep or induce vomiting.
- Could any shoe material have been swallowed? Call your veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly with the object, amount, timing, dog’s weight and symptoms.
- Could polish, adhesive, cleaner or another treatment also have been ingested? Tell the veterinarian and contact an appropriate animal poison-control service for product-specific guidance.
- Has the veterinarian advised an examination? Bring the shoe, fragments and product packaging, and follow the clinic’s instructions rather than creating a home observation plan.
Prompt professional advice is the safest response because a dog can look well before a foreign body causes obstruction, while early assessment gives the veterinary team more options.
