If your dog is choking or having trouble breathing, go to an emergency veterinary clinic now. If your dog swallowed any costume piece, call your veterinarian promptly—even if your dog seems fine. Remove the remaining costume and keep it or take a photo so you can show what may be missing.
What to do right away
- Stop further chewing. Take off the costume and move any loose pieces out of reach.
- Check for an emergency. Choking or difficulty breathing requires immediate emergency veterinary care. Call the clinic while you are on your way if possible.
- Call your veterinarian if anything may have been swallowed. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Small accessories can pose a choking hazard, and swallowed clothing or other objects can sometimes obstruct the digestive tract. ASPCA Halloween safety guidance and VCA’s foreign-body guidance describe these risks.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional tells you to. Trying to make a dog vomit at home can be dangerous, and vomiting is contraindicated in some circumstances. Follow the veterinarian’s directions rather than using a home remedy. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center cautions against home vomiting induction; Merck Veterinary Manual outlines situations where it is not appropriate.
What to tell the veterinarian
Give the clinic as much detail as you can. The information helps the veterinarian assess the object and decide what examination or treatment is appropriate.
- Your dog’s approximate weight and age.
- When the chewing or swallowing may have happened.
- What the costume piece was made of and its approximate size and shape.
- What appears to be missing and how much your dog may have swallowed.
- Whether the piece had buttons, beads, wire, string, batteries, or other attached parts.
- Any changes in your dog’s behavior or other symptoms.
Keep the remaining costume or a photo of it available. If you are unsure whether a piece is missing, say so rather than guessing.
Why a swallowed costume piece needs veterinary advice
The risks depend on the piece and the dog. Small accessories may be choking hazards; plastic may raise toxicity concerns; and fabric, strings, or other swallowed items can become foreign bodies in the digestive tract. ASPCA’s Halloween guidance says, “Small toys or costume accessories pose a choking hazard to our four-legged friends and the plastic can be toxic.” A swallowed object can also cause a blockage even if the material itself is not poisonous.

Some foreign objects pass without causing a problem, but appearance alone cannot establish that a particular piece will pass safely. VCA describes outcomes ranging from uneventful passage to a potentially life-threatening obstruction. That is why suspected ingestion warrants a prompt call, not a wait-and-see decision.
Signs that may indicate an obstruction
Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal tenderness or pain, reduced appetite, straining or passing only small amounts of stool, lethargy, or a change in behavior. Signs can vary with the object’s location and the dog. Their absence does not rule out a problem, so call your veterinarian even if your dog currently seems normal.

What the veterinary evaluation may involve
The veterinarian may ask about the incident and examine your dog. If a foreign body is suspected, evaluation may include abdominal X-rays or other imaging. Depending on the case, diagnostic options can include contrast studies, ultrasound, or endoscopy. Treatment may range from veterinary monitoring in selected cases to endoscopic retrieval or surgery.
