Cats usually do not choose to leap from a height they recognize as dangerous. A bird or other distraction can draw a cat toward an open window, while a narrow ledge or smooth brick offers little grip. Keep accessible windows closed or fit them with snug, sturdy screens that cannot shift or leave a gap. If your cat falls, contact a veterinarian promptly—even if the cat seems fine.
Why cats get stuck on ledges
A cat watching a bird, insect, or activity outside may lean or move toward it without noticing how little space remains beneath its paws. The ASPCA says most high-rise falls are accidental; cats typically do not deliberately jump from heights they know are dangerous. A ledge can also be difficult to grip, especially when its surface is smooth or made of brick. A startled or distracted cat may lose its footing before it can recover.
Cats do not always land on their feet. Their ability to right themselves depends in part on the circumstances of the fall, and a short fall is not automatically safe: there may be less time to adjust body position. Neither a cat’s agility nor the apparent height of a fall rules out injury.
How to keep a cat safe near windows
Close unsafe windows or fit secure screens
Keep windows closed whenever a cat can reach an opening that could lead to a fall. If you need ventilation, use a snug, sturdy screen fitted to that particular window. Check that it stays firmly in place and has no gaps a cat could squeeze through.

Check adjustable screens every time
An adjustable screen is protective only if it is firmly wedged into the window frame. Before opening the window, check that the screen is seated securely and cannot be pushed out of position. A screen that fits loosely is not a reliable barrier.
Do not rely on childproof guards alone
Childproof window guards are not necessarily cat-proof; the ASPCA warns that cats can slip through them. Do not treat a guard as a substitute for a secure screen or a closed window.

Choose a screen by fit and retention, not a label
If shopping for replacement mesh—sometimes listed as “pet-resistant window screen mesh”—prioritize a close fit, sturdy construction, secure retention in the frame, and the absence of pass-through gaps. The term is a product category, not proof that a particular screen is escape-proof. No particular material or model is established here as best.
What to do if your cat falls
- Locate your cat and arrange veterinary care promptly. The ASPCA advises taking a fallen cat to an animal hospital or family veterinarian. Call the clinic for instructions while arranging transport.
- Seek immediate veterinary evaluation for serious signs. Difficulty breathing, obvious pain, a limp, inability or reluctance to stand or walk, or marked lethargy warrants urgent attention.
- Keep watching for changes. Falls can cause sprains, fractures, head trauma, and chest or abdominal injuries. Warning signs may include stiffness, whining, reduced appetite, or difficulty eating, and some injuries may not become apparent for hours or days.
- Do not wait for symptoms to prove a fall was serious. A cat may appear outwardly well despite an injury, so seek veterinary guidance after a fall rather than trying to diagnose the cat at home.
What the ASPCA’s survival figure means
The ASPCA reported in its July 6, 2023 article that cats receiving immediate and proper medical attention after high-rise falls have a 90% survival rate. This is an ASPCA-reported figure, not an individual prognosis; the article does not provide a study design or denominator for it. It is not a reason to delay care or assume a particular cat will recover.
